To our Valued Customers,
Welcome to the first Focus Magazine for 2011. This edition is packed with products to inspire you and give you ideas for
the woodworking year ahead. We have included some items from our new range as well as some old favourites. Our new
catalogue is looking good and is well on the way to being finished. For updates on its progress, keep an eye on our website.
In 2011, Focus will continue to bring you stories about people and woodworking, customer profiles, projects and reviews
on our products.
What is it about working with wood that captivates some of us for an entire lifetime? It’s partly the beauty of the raw material
and the satisfaction of creating something real that you can stand before and say, “I made that”. There is also the
personal challenge that drives you to improve your woodworking skills and learn new techniques.
I was recently demonstrating a dovetail jig in our Brisbane store and two men who had been watching me started talking
to each other about their respective projects. There was no awkwardness between these strangers, their shared interest
in woodworking easily broke the ice and before long they were chatting like old friends. One of them had more experience
as a woodworker than the other and I noticed how generous he was with his information. He wasn’t guarded about sharing
his knowledge at all.
This is a pretty typical scenario that can be seen in Carba-Tec ® stores throughout the country. There is a real sense of
camaraderie amongst woodworkers and those little tips that are passed on can really help you to progress as well.
With this in mind our Focus readers are invited to send in their favourite woodworking tips or tricks. The ones we feel will
be of the most use to fellow woodworkers will be posted on our website.
Email your contributions to focus@carbatec.com.au or post them to our Brisbane store address on the back of this
publication. You can include photographs if you wish. If we choose to post your submission on our website we will only publish
your name and the state that you live in.
Without masking tape
“Place a strip of masking tape
around the ends of your timber when
cutting dovetails on a router-based
dovetail jig.”
I can’t remember where this tip came
from, I think it was an old Fine
Woodworking Magazine originally,
but it’s one of the simplest and most
effective tips I have ever been given.
I’ve used just about every form of
dovetail jig there is. One thing that
they all have in common is that the
router bit is inclined to chip the timber
out when you’re cutting dovetails.
This can be very severe with some
timbers and can destroy the effect of
your perfect dovetails. It’s usually
worse when cutting through
dovetails, as you can’t do a climbing
cut along the face to reduce the
chipping out as you do with halfblind
dovetails.
Even if you still get some fibres
chipping out they will stick to the
masking tape and you can keep
them and glue them back into place.
Without the tape they end up lost in
a pile of sawdust on the workshop
floor.
You will get a bit of a sticky build up
on your router bit after a while, but
this can be removed with mineral
turps. Don’t use a fabric-based tape
such as gaffer tape because the bit
won’t cut through it easily. Masking
tape is definitely the best.
Customer Profile: Roy Schack
It’s easy to think, when you wade through the mountains of
homeware and furniture products available across the
country, that craftsmanship is something of a myth. A quaint
concept belonging to a bygone era.
However, Australia has a vibrant culture of professional
woodworkers who produce exceptional quality studio
furniture pieces. Many of them have opened their workshops
to people wanting something more than a DIY level of
woodworking skill. These people are looking to achieve
excellence and learn traditional woodworking skills.
Roy Schack is a fine woodworker who lives and works in
Samford Valley near Brisbane. He runs The Brisbane
School of Fine Woodwork, where he guides his students
through all aspects of woodworking, from the correct use of
hand tools and machinery to understanding timber,
construction and design.
Standing in his workshop located in a beautiful rural setting,
I can’t imagine a more suitable environment to learn fine
woodworking. Roy encourages his students to feel at home
here and whilst they are attending classes, this becomes
their workshop too. The students are from all walks of life
and age groups and at least half are women. This is a
gentle environment conducive to learning and creativity, a
respite from the busy, noisy lives that many of them lead.
Roy Schack wasn’t always a woodworker. A desire for a
career change from merchant banking in 1993 led him to
undertake a course in Town Planning.Whilst working on an
assignment in the Mitchell Library in Sydney, he wandered
into an exhibition of fine woodwork by the members of
The Woodworkers’ Association of New South Wales. The
‘For Tomorrow’ exhibition proved somewhat of a revelation.
“I realised that some people do this for a living”, he had
always thought of woodwork as a hobby. It was an epiphany
of sorts: he knew for the first time in his life, what he wanted
to do. Four months later, he was a student at the Sturt
School for Wood.
As you’re making a piece, fall in love
with it and realise that near enough
is not good enough.
Roy studied under the late Tom Harrington, a person who
had been an enormous influence on his work. Tom’s
approach was to “keep it simple” and concentrate on the
quality of the design and construction and not the “wow
factor”.This advice struck a real chord and underpins Roy’s
approach to both his own work and his teaching.
For many of us, woodworking can be an impenetrable
jungle of complicated mishaps and hours spent bringing our
projects back from the brink of disaster. Roy tries to navigate
around all of this noise. He distils his knowledge and relates
it’s essence to students without them feeling bogged down
or overloaded.
He says that an important element for him when teaching,
is that the students are able to trust in his ability to be able
to help them find solutions to the problems they encounter.
“It’s one thing to get an idea across, but to teach the
students enough so they can start to teach themselves is
another thing”.
In his own work, it’s obvious he has a real affinity for the
process, the material and the tools. The timber he uses in
his furniture maintains the purity of its natural state. It never
feels far from the tree. Roy has produced many fine studio
furniture pieces that have featured in various Australian and
international exhibitions. He is a member of the ‘MADE’
group, a diverse collection of makers and designers in
Queensland who are committed to raising the profile of
studio furniture makers. Each year in Brisbane, the group
stages an exhibition showcasing its work.
There are not
many things as
rewarding as being
able to custom make
your own tools. Our
Brisbane staff member, Gerry
Coon, spent a wet weekend in
the workshop and tried out our
Veritas Spokeshave kits.
I had a wonderful weekend in the shed working
out the wooden spokeshave kits by Veritas. They are
available in two imperial sizes. Blade lengths available
are 1 7 ⁄8” (50mm) for the small one and a massive 2 3 ⁄4”
(70mm) for the large one. Both are equipped with threaded
thumbwheels and lock nuts for precise height adjustment, a tap for
threading the thumbwheel and an A2 steel blade.Veritas also supply
comprehensive instructions with the kit.
For Gerry’s step by step instructions on how to make one of these beautiful
spokeshaves go to www.carbatec.com.au
Setting up a
Lock Mitre Bit
.Router bits open up a world of joinery possibilities. There are hundreds of joints
that can be cut using them, but some are more approachable than others. Of all the
router bits that we stock, the large CMT TM lock mitre bit can be one of the most
daunting to use and is tricky to set up. However, the joint it creates is virtually
indestructible and can be used both as a means to join mitres and parallel glue joints.
It is excellent for use on solid timber and man-made products like MDF as it gives
you enormous glue surface area.
Although the instructions sound simple, experience tells us that there are a few
things that are helpful to know. Firstly, it’s essential that your router table is flat and
the fence is at 90° to the table surface. Like any mitre that you cut, everything must
be square. I recommend using a fence of about 150mm in height for support. As
this is a very large diameter bit, it is best to run it on a low speed, around 10,000
RPM. If the bit is running well and you feel the cut could be a bit cleaner, it can be
increased a fraction but err on the side of caution. Don’t machine timber that’s too
narrow. Cut it wider and rip it down after machining. The vertical pass, particularly,
can be very dangerous on narrow stock.
Mark the centre of your material with a marking gauge, (Fig. 2) this mark needs to
be lined up to the centre of the bit as is shown in Fig. X. This can be a bit difficult
as the bit centre is located about half way along the bottom of the cutter finger. A
height gauge is useful for pinpointing the centre although you will still find there is
a degree of trial and error involved so be prepared to make a few sample cuts. Once
you have your lock mitre joint how you want it, keep your sample as a set-up block
for that material thickness next time.
Mark out the sides of your box with the most decorative sides facing out (Fig. 1).
The A pieces are machined horizontally with the face up. The B pieces are
machined vertically against the fence with the face out. (Figs. 4 & 5)
Don’t try and machine the full profile in a single pass.Three to four smaller passes
will give you a cleaner cut and is much safer as there is a lot less resistance against
the material than with larger cuts. The depth of cut is controlled by moving the fence
out, away from the cutter to increase the amount being removed.
Once the full lock mitre joint is cut check it for accuracy, you will probably need to
adjust the height a fraction. If the horizontally cut piece (A) is too forward, raise the
router bit by about half the error. Lower it if the vertically cut piece (B) is prominent.
To cut parallel glue joints (Fig.Y) the set-up is the same, but all timber is cut in the
‘A’ position, flat on the table surface. The joints are then matched by reversing them
to one another. Be mindful that the first piece is machined with the face edge up,
but the second cut is with the
face edge down.
Fig.Y
After some initial trial and error,
the lock mitre bit is sure to
become a much-used addition
to your tool cupboard.
A Perfect Match
by Tony Forbes
A large number of hand held power tools that create dust
and shavings have a small diameter dust port. When
attaching extraction to them, it’s possible to reduce from
your large dust extractors with 100mm diameter hoses,
to the smaller dust outlets on your power tools. The
problem with this is that a lot of air pressure is lost. This
effect is similar to you trying to take deep fast breaths
through a long drinking straw. There is only a certain
amount of air that will fit through the opening of the straw
no matter how much power you put into blowing. Using
your large dust extractors for smaller machines is an
inefficient use of their capacity.
A better solution is a portable workshop vacuum that can
be directly connected to your power tools such as;
sanders, biscuit jointers and even router tables. The
INOX-36 shop vac is specifically designed for this
purpose. The full range of accessories that come with
the INOX-36 also make it perfect for general cleaning in
the workshop, house or car.
These accessories include:
• Stainless Steel Barrel
• Wet/Dry operation with tip over safety cut-out
• 1400 Watt motor
• Tool triggered (Max. 800W) auto switch with
manual override
• Huge 5m long hose
• Two piece stainless handle
• Hard floor/carpet head
• Small vacuum head
• Wet surface head
• Crevice tool
The Carba-Tec® Dust Deputy is a cyclonic pre-separator
designed to connect to your shop vac to increase its
efficiency by trapping dust in the barrel and not in the
vacuum. The Dust Deputy will capture 99% of the
sanding dust that is extracted.
A cyclonic system works in two stages. In the first stage,
the dust is drawn into the top section or canister and is
flung to the outside where it spirals down into the
collection bucket. In the second stage, the air is then
drawn into the vacuum cleaner where the remaining fine
particles are captured by the vacuum filter. This process
reduces the number of times you need to empty your
shop vac and enables it to maintain a more consistent
airflow. The life of your filters is also significantly
increased.
Together, the INOX-36 Industrial Dust Extractor and the
Carba-Tec® Dust Deputy are a formidable team when it
comes to keeping your workshop dust free.
Dust Deputy saves wear
and tear on vacuum filters
The Inox-36 and
Dust Deputy are
ideal for router
table extraction
The Dust
Deputy is easily
connected to the
Inox-36
y Jan Schilling
It is unusual to visit a fine woodworker’s workshop and not find some
Japanese saws (nokogiri) hanging on the tool rack. For people who
haven’t encountered them, Jan Schilling offers some advice on using and
selecting these distinctive tools.
Japanese saws work very differently to western-style saws, their teeth
are set in the opposite direction and the cut is made by pulling the saw
towards the user. Because the cut is made on the upstroke with the blade
in tension, the metal in the blades can be very thin. This leaves you with
a very fine kerf (width of cut).
In Japan, woodworkers traditionally work on tatami mats on the floor at
a planing board, which is a multi-functional small flat bench with a
sliding dovetail stop. These saws can be used in a sitting or standing
position.
Using a Japanese saw is a little different to the western-style tenon saw.
To begin with you start your cut with the back of the blade not the tip.
(Otherwise there is nothing to pull). As with a tenon saw you can use your
thumb to guide the saw, however, be aware that the blade is really sharp
and if it jumps it will leave a jagged cut on your finger. I have one to show
for my carelessness. Angle the blade a little towards the stock and do
not grip the very front of the handle, but hold it a bit further back.
Saw gently, steadily and with only a little pressure, too much of either
and you’ll wander off course. Also do not suddenly exert pressure or bend
the blade or you’ll loose a few teeth and have a saw that will not cut
perfectly straight.
A tip if you are having trouble sawing straight is to draw a line both front
and back of the stock, set a mirror behind the stock and as you saw,
watch the blade and the line at the back of the stock and adjust your hold
on the saw as necessary – works a treat.
Generally Japanese saws have changeable blades. The teeth are too
fine and the metal too hard to sharpen as you would western saws. If
used with care though, you can easily get a couple of years out of a
blade; depending on the amount of work you are doing and the hardness
of your timber.
Changing a blade is a simple matter of tapping the back front edge of
the blade against a hardwood block. You will then be able to detach it
easily. When you have inserted the new blade, tap it again, only this time
with the spine of the saw – it is similar to putting a broom head on a
handle.
