<strong>Management</strong><br />

Ziwei Wang (2009-2010)<br />

<strong>Retail</strong><strong>in</strong>g is a fresh area and a promis<strong>in</strong>g subject. After complet<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>MSc</strong> programme, I had learned<br />

some fundamental knowledge as well as some current issues. The Pr<strong>of</strong>essors at Stirl<strong>in</strong>g were very<br />

helpful and patient.<br />

Nurul Zamratul (2009-2010)<br />

I ga<strong>in</strong>ed tremendous experience <strong>of</strong> the different po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> views on European retail<strong>in</strong>g. The modules<br />

taught on the programme enhance my knowledge <strong>of</strong> retail<strong>in</strong>g follow<strong>in</strong>g my degree <strong>in</strong> <strong>Retail</strong><br />

<strong>Management</strong> previously at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. I would strongly recommend<br />

to anyone who wishes to pursue their education <strong>in</strong> <strong>Retail</strong> <strong>Management</strong> to attend the programme at<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Stirl<strong>in</strong>g as it is the BEST.<br />

Vikram Goil (2007-2008)<br />

I am currently work<strong>in</strong>g for Louis Vuitton, Indian Private limited. The <strong>MSc</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Retail</strong> <strong>Management</strong> from<br />

the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Stirl<strong>in</strong>g is def<strong>in</strong>itely a programme to opt for. The hospitality <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> staff and<br />

the humble but thorough approach <strong>of</strong> the School leave an <strong>in</strong>delible experience. It has <strong>in</strong>deed left me<br />

memories, just as one would have <strong>of</strong> its home.<br />

Rejeev Nair (2007-2008)<br />

With<strong>in</strong> a week <strong>of</strong> graduat<strong>in</strong>g I became the Customer Relations Executive <strong>of</strong> an onl<strong>in</strong>e retailer which<br />

but has also holped me analyse the position <strong>of</strong> the company and s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong>troduce new money sav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

techniques for the company. All the lectures <strong>in</strong> Stirl<strong>in</strong>g were very thought provok<strong>in</strong>g and my research is<br />

currently help<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the first steps to start<strong>in</strong>g my own bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> the global procurement and logistics<br />

field. The Univeisty is just superb.<br />

Paula Glbert-Haworth (1999-2000)<br />

I found the <strong>MSc</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Retail</strong> <strong>Management</strong> course very useful tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for my current role, Supply Cha<strong>in</strong><br />

Head Office career with<strong>in</strong> retail.<br />

Why become an expert <strong>in</strong> retail<strong>in</strong>g?<br />

<strong>Retail</strong>ers lead economies: <strong>Retail</strong>ers are some <strong>of</strong> the largest and most powerful organisations with<strong>in</strong><br />

economies; examples <strong>in</strong>clude e.g. Tesco (UK) and Walmart (USA). Their scale, complexity and growth<br />

result <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g need for well educated members <strong>of</strong> staff - at many levels and <strong>in</strong>ternationally <strong>in</strong><br />

developed and emerg<strong>in</strong>g countries.<br />

<strong>Retail</strong>ers <strong>in</strong>fluence what people buy: Two thirds <strong>of</strong> all decisions <strong>of</strong> what to buy are made at the<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> sale. Know<strong>in</strong>g how to w<strong>in</strong> shoppers’ body, m<strong>in</strong>d and money at the Po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Sale (retail stage)<br />

impacts on the success <strong>of</strong> both retailers and manufacturers.<br />

<strong>Retail</strong>ers dom<strong>in</strong>ate Market<strong>in</strong>g: <strong>Retail</strong>ers have taken over market<strong>in</strong>g leadership from manufacturers.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g number <strong>of</strong> (highly successful) retail brands, retailers’ gate keeper role <strong>in</strong> new product<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduction, their promotional power (e.g. retailer related advertis<strong>in</strong>g spend<strong>in</strong>g is the highest) and<br />

leverage us<strong>in</strong>g customer knowledge illustrate exceptional market<strong>in</strong>g leadership.<br />

<strong>Retail</strong>ers lead <strong>in</strong>novation and change: <strong>Retail</strong>ers are highly <strong>in</strong>novative; retail operations are<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly sophisticated. Examples <strong>in</strong>clude IT-driven Customer Relationship Programmes, computerbased<br />

merchandis<strong>in</strong>g systems, automated product order<strong>in</strong>g systems and flexible supply cha<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

<strong>Retail</strong>ers are now more than product sellers: <strong>Retail</strong>ers are close to consumers and have the most<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence on the plac<strong>in</strong>g and promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> products and services. Due to this privileged position<br />

retailers have diversified their bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong>to the service sector (<strong>in</strong>surance, mobile communication, real<br />

estate, bank<strong>in</strong>g) or the manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sector (clothes, apparel, consumer electrics, food). Examples<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude: Zara and H&M (fast fashion) or IKEA have become large manufacturers <strong>in</strong> their fields; Tesco<br />

have become a dom<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g market<strong>in</strong>g research company by us<strong>in</strong>g its sales data. Understand<strong>in</strong>g retail<br />

means understand<strong>in</strong>g other sectors and parts <strong>of</strong> the supply cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />

<strong>Retail</strong>ers <strong>of</strong>fer excitement and <strong>in</strong>terest: For all the above reasons retailers are the most excit<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> organisations to work for. Whether large or small, retail challenges managed on a daily<br />

basis provid<strong>in</strong>g stimulus and change. If you want to get on <strong>in</strong> a bus<strong>in</strong>ess or set up your own, retail<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is the sector with the most opportunities worldwide.<br />
