Welcome back to Theatre Under 

The Stars! I hope you had a 

wonderful time with friends and 

family over the holidays. Our 

production of Irving Berlin’s 

White Christmas was such a joy 

for us to present to the city of 

Houston and a fun way to end 

2008. Real snow in Houston is 

always a treat. As we enter 2009, 

TUTS looks forward to a number 

of exciting new developments: a 

new look, new eco-habits, a new approach to communication 

and most importantly, great musicals. 

A New Look: the iconic logo you’ve seen associated with 

Theatre Under The Stars for so many years will get a fresh new 

look next season. No dramatic or severe changes, just enough 

to spruce up the appearance and fit the acronym “TUTS” into 

the logo. We’ve gone by the TUTS nickname for years, and this 

new logo will help shore up our image. 

New Eco-habits: in keeping with our commitment to our 

community, Theatre Under The Stars and the Hobby Center for 

the Performing Arts are going greener. As Mayor White has 

encouraged all of Houston, we now have a full recycling 

program in the administrative offices and theatre lobby and aim 

to continue growing as an environmentally responsible 

organization. 

New ways of communicating: this summer, the Humphreys 

School of Musical Theatre will be presenting a dual-language 

show at the Miller Outdoor Theatre. The premiere English/ 

Spanish version of Disney's Aladdin will bring the magic of 

musical theatre to an even wider spectrum of Houstonians than 

ever before and we’re honored to have the opportunity to 

present this work. When You Wish featured songs in five 

different languages, but this new outreach is the first Spanishlanguage 

presentation from TUTS. The Humphreys School of 

Musical Theatre is a true investment in the future of our art 

form, and these student performers represent TUTS 

beautifully. 

Great musicals: Legally Blonde – The Musical marks the halfway 

point in our 41st season. We’ll continue our season with 

two incredible classics, Les Misérables and Rent, then Happy 

Days for some nostalgic fun and finally Cabaret. Our immediate 

future holds some amazing pieces of theatre, many of which 

help us to remember eras past. Next season will certainly be 

something to look forward to, providing everything from the 

exotic orient to the familiar northeast. We certainly have a lot to 

look forward to in 2009 at Theatre Under The Stars and we 

thank you for being a part of it all!

FROM THE FOUNDER/PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR 

As Legally Blonde – The Musical 

bounces its hot-pink heart onto our 

stage this February, just in time for 

Valentine’s Day, its theme of girl 

power draws strength from 

something we all share: keeping 

passion in fashion. Elle’s lyrics, 

whose sentiment win over those 

who listen with an empathetic 

affection, can be seen as universal 

in appeal: “How about love? You 

ever been in love? ‘Cause if you 

have you’ll know that love never accepts a defeat, no challenge it 

can’t meet, no place it can’t go…” 

Elle sings of romantic love, of course, but the lyrics also could 

suggest other kinds of “letting your heart lead you.” Nowhere is 

love more evident than in the joy artists bring to the musical 

theatre, or the satisfaction audiences find watching their work. 

That sharing of passion is truly what makes the theatrical 

experience singular. It took this very popular film, musicalized, to 

the Broadway stage and then to MTV. Our collective love for the 

mega-musical epic Les Miserables brought it into our season this 

year, just as our affection for the originally-scheduled Meet Me In 

St. Louis will secure it for a season to come. And speaking of 

seasons, our special offering of the landmark, contemporary 

musical Rent this spring will fill the Hobby with the popular hit 

anthem "Seasons of Love." Producers Garry Marshall and Bob 

Boyett, along with composer Paul Williams, developed their 

nostalgic fondness for TV’s beloved Cunningham family, the 

heart-throb Fonz, and his special lady Pinky Tuscadero into 

Happy Days–The Musical. 

Love is what made me start TUTS in the first place, and why I’m 

still here these four decades later. Just as first Elle’s sorority 

sisters, then the Harvard admissions committee, then the 

university’s students, are won over by her passion---the musical 

theatre experience can work its magic by letting us all identify with 

following inspiration. Inspiration for a person, for a story, for a song 

(preferably with dancing), for a musical theatre company, for a 

new year, or for a new theatrical season. We’re soon to announce 

a slate of musicals for 2009-2010 that we hope you will love as 

much as we do. Add a resolution to your new year’s and 

valentine's lists to reserve a place in your heart for TUTS, because 

you’ll always have one in ours. 

I’ll let Elle’s lyrics close for me, enjoy her passion and the show! 

“Don't laugh when I say love, don't think that I'm naïve, because 

even a person who's smart can listen to their heart–can listen and 

believe–so believe in what love can achieve…”

Guild. She owes her parents more than she can 

repay and is married to a genius, which she
