Disney
A VERY
SUMMER
By Roy Hamlin, Theatre Under The Stars Associate Artistic Director
N
ew York City may have both The
Little Mermaid and Mary Poppins
(with The Lion King still ruling),
but over the summer Houston will
have two new Disney contenders
as well: When You Wish and Geppetto &
Son, both courtesy of Music Theatre
International and the good folks at Disney
Theatrical. TUTS will be presenting
Southwest Premieres of both new
properties, and save you the cost of travel to
Broadway (not to mention much more
reasonable prices—-one is even free!).
Early to mid-summer will see two
incarnations of Disney’s When You Wish, a
newly adapted musical theatre revue, at
Miller Theatre in Herman Park….a sneak
peek preview during the mornings of June 3-
5, then the full production every evening July
15-20. Throwing open the archives of eight
decades of Disney music from the silver
screen, various television series, animated
adventures, and even their family resorts,
those generous “Imagineers” have given
TUTS license to weave together all your
favorite “Wonderful World of Magic” songs.
“The Mickey Mouse March” will meet
“Minnie’s Yoohoo,” and counting on “The
Second Star to the Right” to grant “A Dream
Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” will take us all
to “A Whole New World”…and beyond! A
very special, first-time-ever collaboration
(specially arranged for Miller Theatre this
summer) has been made between TUTS’
professional production company and the
Academy at TUTS’ Humphreys School of
Musical Theatre. In this show, the student
cast will be as large as the adult one—-a very
fitting ratio for a family musical. Performers
of all ages will delight every member of your
family with song and dance, back under the
stars where TUTS started, all for free in
Herman Park. TUTS has been presenting
musicals there annually for forty years, and
what a way to commemorate that!
August to early September will find the
Academy at HSMT back in production
mode again, as the Apprentice Conservatory
Training program (focused on performers 13
to 18) prepares the premiere of Disney’s
Geppetto & Son, a stage musical newly
combined from the Disney classic
“Pinnochio” and the television movie
“Geppetto.” Composed by legendary
Broadway vet Stephen Schwartz (the hit
musical Wicked, among many others), but
still utilizing iconic songs like “I’ve Got No
Strings” and “When You Wish Upon a Star”,
the show takes a new look at the world’s
most famous puppet and his foster father.
Mr. Schwartz, having joined HSMT last fall
for the premiere of The Stephen Schwartz
Project, was keen on bringing his latest here
to workshop with the TUTS students; the
composer, along with librettist David I.
Stern, will join the TUTS creative team to
guide the new work forward. Afterward,
Music Theatre International will make the
property licensable across the country, with
the Apprentice Conservatory version as a
prototype. Those dates of performance, in
Zilkha Hall here at the Hobby Center, are
September 12 and 13, with special student
matinees the mornings of September 11 and
12. Filled with signature tunes, lively
dancing, and the ironic humor of a fractured
fairy tale, Disney’s Geppetto & Son is a
show with which the whole family can learn
as they laugh along. As noted by Stern, “It’s
been quite a journey from the first spark of
an idea back in 1994 to a screenplay in 1997
to a movie in 2000 to a stage adaptation in
2005 to the upcoming production at TUTS
this fall. The story that we are telling has
continued to evolve with each incarnation,
and I am excited for such a top tier theatre
program to be one of the first theaters to
produce the latest version.”
Disney Theatrical and Theatre Under The
Stars have always enjoyed a special
relationship, dating back to 1993, when the
Disney company began to turn to live
theatrical production outside of their parks for
the first time. Disney came to Houston and
TUTS for help with the biggest gamble either
institution ever took: trying to turn the huge hit
movie Beauty and the Beast into a huge hit
live musical. You know the end of that story
already—-countless national and international
tours, and 14 years on Broadway. So it’s only
natural that they partner again, offering that
Disney magic live to Houston audiences—-
and the chance to sing the beloved material to
a new generation of emerging performers.
Disney’s When You Wish and Geppetto & Son
have a strong tradition to live up to, but with
enough luck, could be another “tale as old as
time, song as old as rhyme” like the true
Disney progeny whose heritage they join: that
most famous TUTS World Premiere, Beauty
and the Beast. See them here before they join
their ancestors on Broadway!
Group tickets to Disney’s Geppetto and Son
go on sale May 1 and single tickets go on sale
June 2, 2008. For more ticket information on
Faith Prince finds a touch of Chekhov in the meddling
mom she plays in the new musical A Catered Affair
a big wedding), throws a flying wedge into the
elopement, and the conflicts begin—not the
least of which is paying for it (a major money
strain for her shabby-cabby hubby).
To call Aggie the Momma Rose of weddings
overstates it a bit, but not by much. “If
you’d talked to me in San Diego, I might have
said that,” Prince admits. [The musical tried
out at the Old Globe there and raked in seven
area awards, including an easy win for Prince.]
b
ells are ringing again on Broadway
for Faith Prince, who nabbed her
Tony 15 years ago for Miss
Adelaide, “the well-known fiancée”
of that artful altar-dodger, Nathan Detroit, in
Guys and Dolls. Now she is conspicuously
queuing up to collect a companion Tony for the
no less marriage-minded Aggie Hurley in A
Catered Affair at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
Unlike Ever-lovin’ Adelaide, whose 14-yearlong
engagement played havoc with her upper
respiratory tract, Aggie is very much in the
bridal driver’s seat—even if she’s not the bride,
exactly (at least, literally). And instead of
Adelaide’s militant “Marry the Man Today,” we
have Aggie’s daugher Janey’s unsentimental
Marry the Man Tomorrow (so that Bride and
Groom can avail themselves of a sudden offer
to drive a friend’s car from The Bronx to L.A.
and pretend they’re on a free honeymoon).
Aggie, herself a victim of a sudden marriage
(and still longing for the lace and lavishness of
“Actually, Aggie is quite different from
Momma Rose. She’s not brash and brassy. She’s
cold and controlling, but soon you see what she
has endured. You see she doesn’t really know if
her husband loves her because they had to get
married. As in life, it’s never the present stuff—
it’s what it triggers in the past. I think Aggie is
more a Chekhov woman.”
Early television’s “poet of the pavement,”
Paddy Chayefsky, created “A Catered Affair” for
“The Philco Television Playhouse” of May 22,
1955, starring Pat Henning and Thelma Ritter. A
MarryingforMama
year later Gore Vidal adapted it into an MGM movie
for Ernest Borgnine and Bette Davis. Now, Harvey
Fierstein has turned both of the above into a
Broadway musical—with songs by John Bucchino—
and retailored the uncle-of-the-house (Barry
Fitzgerald) into an openly gay florist, for himself.
Director John Doyle—previously a Tonywinning
(Sweeney Todd) and Tony-nominated
(Com-pany) interpreter of Sondheim—here
places his bets on the Broadway-bowing
Bucchino. You’ve heard of The Horse Whisperer;
his casts refer to Doyle as The Actor Whisperer,
and Prince is the latest to praise his gentle methods
of righting a character.
“He always makes you feel great about yourself.
Even if you’re not going the right way, you
never know it because he leads you to where you
should be without ever making you feel you
weren’t there. I can’t tell you what that does for an
actor. It’s good parenting. He takes me places I’ve
never been.”
For starters, Doyle has increased Prince’s
multi-tasking skills. She acts, sings and dances as
always but here while making beds, peeling potatoes,
scrambling eggs—all the dreary dailiness
that is her life, all onstage. Prince breezes through
this “because of the way John works. He does
everything in repetition so you always know what
you’re doing. It’s my favorite way to work. It supports
the play, too, because this mundane stuff is
Aggie’s whole life till she stops and takes stock.
But she stays busy up to that moment.”
A Catered Affair is a low-rent, blue-collar
Father of the Bride—a nuptial taffy-pull among
the bride (Leslie Kritzer), her inner-conflicted
parents (Tom Wopat and Prince) and, oh yes, that
forgotten man, the groom (Matt Cavenaugh)—
all played out at exactly life-size.
“This is the fifth time Tom and I have worked
together, and we’ve always had great chemistry,”
says Prince. [He was Billy Bigelow to her Carrie
Pipperidge in a Kennedy Center Carousel and a
replacement Sky Masterson to her Adelaide on
Broadway; plus they teamed for a Harold Arlen
tour and a nightclub cabaret act.] “He’s just wonderful.
And Leslie Kritzer, who plays my daughter—there’s
such trust there. It feels like she is my
daughter, which is strange because we’re not
warm onstage, but we are offstage.”
12 PLAYBILL
Jerome Robbins’ Broadway began Prince’s
Broadway career, handpicked by The Master. “I was
really his kind of girl. I always thought I was born 30
years too late and, if I wasn’t right for that show, I’d
better reconsider and do something else.Thank God
he put me in it.” And Robbins’s faith was rewarded
with the first of Faith’s three Tony nominations.
Next came Lorraine Bixby, who arrived
D.O.A and only lingered for nine performances
in Nick & Nora. She was the murder victim the
title sleuths were investigating and would pop up
periodically throughout the evening in telling
flashbacks. It was also the last time she created an
original role for Broadway—until now.
“I feel like I have a purpose in this play, and
that gives me great joy because nothing makes me
happier than to affect people. I really feel that’s
my God-given gift in life.”
Aggie is a gift, too, giving people someone
other than Adelaide with the Prince imprint. “For
some reason, people really related to her. They’d
see me as someone else and say, ‘Well, you’re not
Miss Adelaide.’ Well, I never was. I’m Faith, and
Faith is many different things. It’s a myth comediennes
can’t go another way. The mere mention
someone’s a comic means there’s gotta be darkness
there somewhere. That’s what makes the comedy.
It’s a choice to cope, somehow, with something.
It’s so funny when people go, ‘Oh, I had no idea
you could do that.’ Well, of course, of course, I
can do that. I act.”
c
ould playwright Liz Flahive feel
Here, about a dysfunctional
Midwestern family in a crisis
involving their son, is getting its world premiere
at Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC).
Julie White and Tobias Segal appear
in From Up Here by Liz Flahive (inset)
Julie White stars in her first role
since her Tony and Obie-winning
turn as the shrill but intuitive
actors’ agent in Douglas Carter Beane’s The
Little Dog Laughed.
Flahive grew up outside Chicago. “I have
great parents, so no inspiration there; however,
like a lot of kids, I struggled with school and
family. Being a teen sucked. I didn’t fit in and
was unhappy and depressed.”
Looking back, she realizes it was just a
phase, “but my happiest moment was my last
day of school, when I knew I was getting out.”
She came to New York, enrolled at NYU and
ultimately found an artistic home in the
14 PLAYBILL
writers group at Ars Nova, which Flahive
describes as a young company with a strong
sense of place. “There was safety and support.
It was an incredible somewhere to be.”
Especially when, straight out of workshop,
her play had buzz. Ars Nova artistic director
Jason Eagan and director of artistic development
Emily Shooltz, formerly with MTC,
heard that MTC was looking for a play and
on a lark sent From Up Here to its associate
director, Mandy Greenfield.
MTC executive producer Barry Grove and
acting artistic director Daniel Sullivan decided
to produce it this season in association with
Ars Nova. “It was wild,” says the 28-year-old
Flahive. “Nothing indicated this would be a
possibility. I feel so fortunate and privileged.”
From Up Here is filled with young
characters and a strong adult female, Grace
Warren—played by White—
who in the midst of a volatile
family situation and adjusting
to her second marriage
tries to keep things together
even as they keep unraveling.
Flahive describes White
and director Leigh Silverman
(Beebo Brinker Chronicles,
Well) as good captains. “That
was vital since things had to
come together quickly. When
you have a director and actress who
ask good questions, you can dig in. But I
didn’t have to explain and explain. They
understood the play, and the actors got it right
away. Julie’s fun and wonderful working on a
new play. It’s helpful to have someone with
their ears up. Before you knew it, we were off
to the races.”
Though not over the excitement of having
her first play in front of audiences, Flahive is
working on her next. “It’s coming along. I’m
on page five.”
A LIFE IN
THE THEATRE
by Mervyn Rothstein
Stage professionals look back at decades of devotion to their craft
PLAYWRIGHT AND DIRECTOR ARTHUR LAURENTS
“
Working in the theatre is, to me,
living,” says Arthur Laurents.
At 90, Laurents is still active in the
art form he has loved for over 60 years.
For the third time on Broadway, he is directing
Gypsy—this version, at the St. James Theatre, stars
Patti Lupone (see related article on page 8).
“This production came along at probably the
worst time,” he says. “Tom Hatcher, with whom I
shared a life for 52 years, died. He had urged me
to do this Gypsy. I did it for him. When I got to
the rehearsal hall, I came back to life.”
Laurents wrote his first
Broadway play, Home of the
Brave, about a Jewish GI in
World War II, in 1945. His
stage credits include the play
The Time of the Cuckoo; the
librettos for West Side Story
and Gypsy; directing the original
La Cage aux Folles; and
directing revivals of Gypsy
with Angela Lansbury, Tyne
Daly and LuPone. He has
won two Tonys: in 1968 for
the book of Hallelujah, Baby!,
and in 1984 for La Cage. Screenplays in his
long film career include The Way We Were and
The Turning Point.
Laurents grew up in Brooklyn. Near his house
was a theatre company. “My cousins and I would
go every Saturday. My parents took me to theatre.
I went alone to Broadway when I was 12.”
After attending Cornell he began writing
radio plays. He served in the Army during World
War II. “And I wrote Home of the Brave. Once that
started, it seemed to me it’s where I belonged.”
He went to the West Coast to write films “for
money. I fell in love. I lived with Farley
Granger.” He was blacklisted for his political
beliefs and lived in Paris before returning to the
New York stage.
Arthur Laurents
In the mid-1950s, Jerome Robbins and
Leonard Bernstein asked him to write the libretto
for what had started as a modern-day musical
Romeo and Juliet, involving Jews and Catholics
and called East Side Story. Laurents and Bernstein
revised the ethnicities to Polish–American and
Puerto Rican, redirected the geography—and
changed musical history.
In 1959 came Gypsy, which many people
call the best musical ever. Laurents has long said
it is his favorite. “I always was proud of it,” he
once told The New York Times. “But Gypsy grew to
be a classic. It wasn’t one of
those things that was hailed as
such in the beginning.” (It didn’t
win the Tony, losing to The
Sound of Music and Fiorello!,
which tied.)
Laurents directed a
Broadway musical in 1962
called I Can Get It for You
Wholesale, with a talented
newcomer named Barbra
Streisand in a featured role.
Did he know she would
become a huge star? “Barbra
told you then that her career would be like it
turned out to be. She was 19. And she knew she
was going to be a movie star.”
In the ’80s came La Cage. “One reason I did it
was to show you could do a musical about gay
people with dignity, and it could be a success.”
The new Gypsy, first done at City Center last
summer, is different from others, he says. “We’ve
been re-examining, rediscovering, exploring.
What’s the point of doing another revival? You
don’t just revive. You look for new life.”
Laurents will be 91 in July and has no plans to
retire. “I’m doing a revival of West Side Story on
Broadway in 2009, unlike any production ever
done. I’m not going to tell you how. You’ll have to
see it.”
FROM THE FOUNDER/PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Welcome to the wacky, yet
somehow ordinary, world of The
Drowsy Chaperone…I know
you'll enjoy the party, even
without supervision! Like our
previous show this season, The
25th Annual Putnam County
Spelling Bee, this one marks the
passion and mission of writerperformers
to express their own
individual, wonderful point of
view. Originally created as a
celebratory wedding reception
skit to enliven the nuptials of two members of a theatre-crazy
Canadian clique, The Drowsy Chaperone was just too much
fun to be performed only once. The writer-performers, whose
real names remain with their fictional counterparts (Bob
Martin and Janet Van De Graaff) in the show to this day, kept
adding to and expanding the piece with their colleagues Lisa
Lambert, Greg Morrison, and Don McKeller. It ran in clubs and
special engagements in Canada, then just kept
growing…through development with the TUTS-founded
National Alliance for Musical Theatre, and finally on to five
Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, and one Theatre
World Award in New York City. At its heart, though, the real
Bob Martin was playing host (on Broadway, as the central
narrator, "Man in Chair") to each audience, welcoming them
to an escapist haven of great old-fashioned high jinks and
farce, filled with lively music and clever banter…unlike almost
any wedding any of us have been to, but always secretly
wished to attend.
Speaking of "wishing", thanks to the collaboration and
creativity of Disney Theatrical that brought Beauty and the
Beast to us first, once again TUTS will be working with them
to share quality family entertainment with our Houston
community…only this time for free! Allowing access to their
vast musical catalogue, TUTS will be workshopping a musical
revue called Disney’s When You Wish for this July in our
birthplace, Hermann Park's Miller Theatre. We've been out
there since 1968 when we helped open the venue, the only
arts group to appear annually all these four decades, with a
free week of musical theatre yearly for anyone to enjoy. It'll be
complete with the songs you love, all the way from “A Dream
is A Wish Your Heart Makes" to "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah!", with
movies from Winnie The Pooh all the way home to Aladdin.
Our HSMT Academy students, along with a cast of
professional singers and dancers, will bring the "most magical
place on earth" here to Houston each night July 15 through
July 20. What a very special, and appropriate, way to close our
Fortieth Anniversary year. Who knows, maybe the next Bob
Martin or Janet Van De Graaf will be there, onstage or
humming along in the audience, and grow up to write their
own "wish" into their own Broadway show.
Such amazing things could happen, when you champion
musical theatre with TUTS….thanks for the support!
