Recently, Everett Evans wrote an 

article in the Houston Chronicle 

about enjoying theatre on a 

budget. As I read it, one point in 

particular stood out to me---the 

concept of attending theatre in a 

group. True, you receive a 

generous group discount, but 

what I liked about that approach 

was the impulse of enjoying 

theatre entertainment with the 

camaraderie of friends. That’s an outing that’s sure to uplift! 

Groups supporting one another means more now than ever. 

Theatre Under The Stars has been incredibly fortunate with 

the accomplishments of our current season. In a difficult 

economy, quality musical theatre truly provides an escape and 

can elevate as well as enlighten. Friends support the theater 

and one another when they attend as a happy collective.

outreach projects, bringing busloads of children into the world 

of musical theatre. Entertainment can be a haven when times 

are tough and that’s as accurate today as it was decades ago, 

whether the hardships are being experienced by a whole 

economy, or one school at a time. The group support TUTS

A NOTE FROM THE SCENIC DESIGNER 

When TUTS got the opportunity to produce our own version of 

the modern classic musical blockbuster Les Misérables, the 

original producers had a stipulation that initial scenic designer 

John Napier’s landmark “revolving barricade” scenery should be 

reserved for their own ongoing touring and resident productions 

in New York or London. TUTS had a chance to try something 

new, and below are scenic designer Matthew Kinley's thoughts 

on the subject. 

I had already worked on several original productions of Les 

Misérables with John Napier when I was asked to start looking 

at another version for this tour. The task was a daunting one as 

John's original set is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of 

20th century theatre design, and despite its size there is very 

little fat to be cut from it, which presented me with a problem. 

The angle I wanted to explore with Fred Hanson was releasing 

the design from the black brick box it had been in for the past 22 

years, as the one thing the original show doesn't quite 

communicate is any sense of time or place.

folded paper with ink (similar to Rorschach tests) as well as 

straight responses to either landscape, figure or the 

subconscious. 

The one unifying feature throughout his whole body of work is 

the somber yet beautiful mainly sepia color palette, and 

especially his use of chiaroscuro - using the contrast of dark 

and light to add both body and form as well as atmosphere to 

the work. This brooding blackness and light also seemed the 

perfect embodiment of so many characters and storylines within 

the show. 

I knew I wanted to work with projection in order to locate the 

action, but to be used very simply, almost more like old 

fashioned slides as this was a show whose story was so 

complex it didn't justify constant animation apart from some key 

scenes. The question was: what to project? 

I had been vaguely aware that Victor Hugo was a painter as well 

as a writer, but nothing quite prepared me for the images which 

I came across when researching the show. Hugo was obviously 

a visionary; the drawings I found were at once both abstract, 

fantastical and free but underlined with a backbone of 

draftsmanship. Hugo as an artist was well ahead of his time; 

there are many examples in amongst the 4000 or so works 

which demonstrate his experiments with different media and 

processes; from charcoal, sepia, pen, ink and soot to lace prints, 

It was for this reason that I started to employ the use of these 

paintings in the projections as they were so dark and rich I 

thought they would live well within the original aesthetic of the 

show. Many of the projections are produced using a blend of his 

paintings and drawings sometimes combined with 19th century 

French photography to ground and locate them, combined with 

painted cloths which are more directly based on his abstract 

work. 

Hugo kept his paintings and drawings away from public 

exhibition for fear they may detract from his writing. Delacroix 

expressed the opinion that if Hugo had decided to become a 

painter instead of a writer, he would have outshone the artists of 

their century. Indeed, there are many paintings which would not 

have looked out of place within the works of the credited 

abstract expressionists and surrealists in the following century. I 

hope that this production can go some way to reconciling these 

two aspects of this artist with each other, as to me they seem to 

have a perfect symmetery.

FRED HANSON (Director) is proud to be recreating 

with Matt Kinley this new version of 

Les Miserables for Theatre Under the Stars. 

The production debuted last summer at Wolf 

Trap, Viriginia, Kansas City Starlight, and the 

Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Other regional work 

includes Miss Saigon and Les Miserables at 

the St. Louis Muny. International productions 

include Miss Saigon in Tokyo (2004 & 2008), 

based on the original Broadway production, 

and also in São Paulo. He directed the US 

National Tour of Oklahoma (based on the 

2004 Broadway production) and staged 

National Tours of Carousel (which originated 

here at TUTS) and Miss Saigon, recreating 

Nicholas Hytner’s original direction. He was 

the Executive Producer of the Broadway 

production of Miss Saigon and the 2007 

Broadway revival of Les Miserables, and has 

worked on many other Broadway productions 

and National tours including Evita, Agnes of 

God, 42nd Street, Zorba and the original 

Broadway productions of Execution of 

Justice, Les Miserables, the Phantom of the 

Opera, and Miss Saigon He started his career 

on the production staff of the Lyric Opera of 

Chicago and the San Francisco Opera.

ROGER ALLAN RABY (Production Stage 

Manager) is a Broadway performance 

veteran of such shows as Mame starring 

Angela Lansbury, Sherry!, How to Succeed

Burnett. The 2008-2009 season marks his 

21 st as the TUTS’ Resident Production Stage 

Manager. Les Miserables is his 79th 

production for Theatre Under The Stars as 

either Director, Choreographer, or PSM. He 

began his career in stage management with 

the tour of A Period of Adjustment starring 

William Shatner. As TUTS’ PSM, he has 

helmed the World Premieres of Phantom, 

Sayonara, Hot Shoe Shuffle, Zorro, What 

Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, and Disney’s 

When You Wish, as well as numerous other 

productions; all of the Tommy Tune Awards; 

and many of the TUTS Gala 

presentations starring some of Broadway’s 

finest talents. He PSM-d for the National 

Tours of Nine starring Sergio Franchi; Mame 

starring Juliet Prowse; Camelot starring 

Robert Goulet; and the original Houston 

Company of The Best Little Whorehouse In 

Texas which he re-staged for both the 

National and Las Vegas Companies. For 

TUTS, he has directed/choreographed 

productions of TBLWIT, Carousel (twice), 

The Music Man, TUTS’ Cavalcade, Dames 

at Sea, and Fiddler On The Roof (twice). He 

served in the same capacity for TUTS’ 25th 

Anniversary Celebration, Thank Frank!. For 

the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, he has 

staged Paint Your Wagon, Mame and West 

Side Story. For 22 years he served as the 

Artistic Director for the internationally 

renowned and multiple Dove Award winning 

Houston Christmas Pageant at Houston’s

tour of The Drowsy Chaperone. He was original 

music director for Broadway productions of 

Never Gonna Dance, the recent revival of Man 

of La Man cha, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon 

and Singin’ in the Rain. On Broadway he also 

conducted Wicked, the revival of Chicago, The 

Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public, Song and 

Dance, My One and Only and The Magic Show.

has worked as music director, composer,

busy as the Music Director, Associate 

Artistic Director and resident composer of 

Experience Vocal Dance Company

year he has served as Music Director for the 

Off-Broadway production Mark Twain’s 

Blues, Family Opera Initiative’s Animal

MATT KINLEY (Scenic Designer) Matt 

worked extensively as a freelance costume 

and prop maker for stage, film and video with 

Robert Allsopp Associates before returning to 

study and subsequently graduate from the 

Motley Theatre design course in 1994.Since 

then he has enjoyed a long relationship with 

the National Theatre as a designer, design 

associate, and draughtsman on over forty 

productions including Jerry Springer the 

Opera, Noises Off, Baby Doll, Albert 

Speer,The Coast of Utopia and My Fair Lady. 

Since leaving the National Theatre five years 

ago he has been working within commercial 

theatre as an associate designer on shows 

including The Woman in White ,My Fair 

Lady (UK and US Tours), Chitty Chitty Bang 

Bang (UK Tour), Les Miserables(Broadway 

and Holland), Equus(West End) ,Mary 

Poppins (UK/US/AUS and Holland tours). 

Matt is also continuing to develop the concept 

of this new design of Les Miserables for 

future productions in 2010.

Musical national tour and United Kingdom 

tour. Cookie has recently designed make up 

for the national tour of Dirty Dancing. She
