TUTS: WHO ARE WE?<br />

Theatre Under The Stars is a Houston based non-profit institution dedicated to enriching life through the experience of<br />

quality musical theatre and positively impacting lives beyond the stage through innovative education and community<br />

outreach initiatives.<br />

At Theatre Under The Stars, we accomplish our mission through three branches: our main-stage and Miller<br />

productions, our training branch the Humphreys School of Musical Theatre (HSMT), and our community education and<br />

outreach projects. These three branches comprise the heart and soul of TUTS, working together to bring our mission<br />

statement to life on the stage and in the community.<br />

Our Main-Stage Shows: As a TUTS patron you appreciate the world-class productions we bring to Sarofim Hall at the<br />

Hobby Center each season, as well as our free summer musical at Miller Outdoor Theater. Our audiences have shown<br />

us tremendous loyalty over the years and that support enables us to give back to Houston through HSMT and our<br />

community outreach work.<br />

Humphreys School of Musical Theatre: Since 1972, HSMT (the official training wing of TUTS) has provided a superb<br />

and thrilling musical theatre training forum for children and adults. Housed in the TUTS Studios at the Hobby Center for<br />

the Performing Arts, its year-round schedule is conducted by an outstanding professional faculty and renowned resident<br />

and guest artists. HSMT offers Studio classes for students newly attracted to musical theatre, as well as audition-based<br />

Academy classes for career-track students focusing on professional techniques of acting, singing and dancing.<br />

Community Education and Outreach: TUTS takes great pride in its mission to advance the cause of the arts, joining<br />

the voices of teachers and scholars who recognize that the arts are vital to young people’s success. As arts dollars<br />

evaporate in school budgets, it is the duty of arts organizations such as TUTS to play a leading role in bringing the<br />

beauty and enrichment of theatre into the lives of our children. Theatre Under The Stars partners with hospitals, special<br />

needs groups, YMCAs, and many schools throughout the greater Houston area to implement performing arts training.<br />

In 2008-2009, more than 80,000 children and adults were impacted by TUTS' Education and Outreach programs.<br />

FROM <strong>THE</strong> FO<strong>UNDER</strong>/PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR<br />

With an iconic show like The<br />

Sound of Music, many<br />

regional theatres regularly<br />

repeat the experience. This is<br />

particularly true with a property<br />

filled with children's roles, when<br />

the regional theatre has a<br />

training wing like our own<br />

Humphreys School of Musical<br />

Theatre (HSMT). Usually when<br />

thinking of the show, Maria<br />

springs to mind, but I’ve always<br />

been partial to the younger juvenile ingénue. With the TUTS<br />

versions, there are three wonderful women who stand out in my<br />

Liesl memories from this lovely family musical.<br />

The first is Theresa Cooney (now Theresa Nelson), who played<br />

Liesl actually twice, in 1973 and 1979. She had met her<br />

husband through TUTS – a favorite actor of mine, Kevin<br />

Cooney. So she played naive when already married – very<br />

versatile! Theresa's career has taken her to another evolution as<br />

an award-winning writer, but since 1968 she and Kevin have<br />

been one of the best "double acts" I know. You will note both<br />

appear in this current production, as well. How full circle we all<br />

have come.<br />

The middle Liesl was Michelle DeJean, who many of you recall<br />

as the headliner of the last TUTS presentation of Chicago, in<br />

which she also starred on Broadway. A product of our<br />

Humphreys School, Michelle played Liesl both here and in<br />

Seattle in 1988 and 1990. She was cast opposite fellow HSMT<br />

legend/future Broadway veteran Michael Tapley as Rolf.<br />

Michelle's image as the pure "sixteen going on seventeen" lass<br />

matured as she hit Broadway...it is her iconic glamorous siren,<br />

smoking a cigarette in fishnet hose, that was the logo for the<br />

Chicago production in NYC and on the road. In Times Square,<br />

this former Houston schoolgirl was one "come hither" vamp on<br />

a billboard nearly ten stories tall. Her charm and talent is just as<br />

monumental. Her signed poster of that image in my office<br />

thanks TUTS/HSMT with the note "you gave me the life I know<br />

and love.”<br />

The current Liesl for this production (also a recent Academy<br />

alum of the training wing) is Jessica Ferguson. As a student, she<br />

was already featured in mainstage roles in A Wonderful Life<br />

(Ruth Reynolds Bailey) and When You Wish (Ariel the<br />

Mermaid, among other features). Since graduating early from<br />

her home-schooled high, she has relocated to Los Angeles<br />

where she is becoming a pop music princess....with a new Webbased<br />

narrative musical series, and a recording already on the<br />

Paul Blart: Mall Cop soundtrack. Jessica's future is one we can<br />

all share....a combination of her natural gifts and the training<br />

such HSMT student productions as Disney's Aladdin, The<br />

Stephen Schwartz Project, and The Shoemaker and the<br />

Christmas Elves have granted her. In our school she had<br />

Stephen Schwartz compliment her singing and dancing, and<br />

local jazz legend Rob Landes compose for her very own voice.<br />

Her star is on its rise.<br />

Of course I love all these talented women. Yet their very lives<br />

were changed not just by playing Liesl, but also by your<br />

support...every seat to which you subscribe, each individual<br />

ticket, and all contributions you make to TUTS go to students<br />

like these Liesls...helping them advance in our shared art form<br />

as well. All three earned their professional performer "union<br />

card" as a member of Actors' Equity, in this classic role. Not only<br />

do you get wonderful entertainment, you help assure developing<br />

artists receive vital support. As Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote<br />

"Your heart will be blessed, and they will sing once more...."<br />

Enjoy Jessica, Theresa, Kevin, and the<br />

rest of this mostly local cast. Our ongoing<br />

work with local artists and with students is<br />

one of my strongest goals, and nothing<br />

can bring that together quite like The<br />

Sound of Music. What better way to<br />

celebrate the holidays, at home with<br />

TUTS.<br />

GUIDING LIGHTS<br />

JOHN C. BRECKENRIDGE<br />

President/CEO<br />

John C. Breckenridge joined Theatre Under The<br />

Stars in 1990 to oversee TUTS’ rapidly-expanding<br />

production operations. In September 2006, he<br />

became President and CEO. In his 19 years with<br />

TUTS, Mr. Breckenridge has overseen more than<br />

120 productions, including the world premieres of the<br />

Kopit/Yeston Phantom, James Michener’s Sayonara,<br />

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Jekyll & Hyde. Prior<br />

to joining TUTS, he served in various management<br />

and technical roles on national and international<br />

tours including he ai o aid Coereld, The<br />

Unsinkable Molly Brown, Jesus Christ Superstar,<br />

Sophisticated Ladies, Oklahoma! and Big River. Mr.<br />

Breckenridge has a degree in Lighting Design and<br />

Technical Theatre from the University of Michigan. He<br />

is a Board member of the National Alliance for Musical<br />

Theatre, Theater Of The Stars in Atlanta, GA, the<br />

Independent Presenter’s Network and the Houston<br />

Downtown Alliance. As a member of the Broadway<br />

League, he is a Tony Awards voter. He is a member of<br />

Class XXVII of The American Leadership Forum and<br />

the Airport Rangers, a community-based mounted<br />

security patrol at George Bush Intercontinental<br />

Airport. His family includes wife Debra and children,<br />

Andrew, 15, Jessica, 13, and stepson, Seth, 14.<br />

musical, Bells Are Ringing, in 1968, Frank Young has<br />

<br />

international acclaim through 42 seasons of more than<br />

300 productions. As the longest serving artistic director<br />

of any Houston arts organization, he has produced<br />

world premieres and international tours including<br />

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jekyll & Hyde, Zorro,<br />

the Kopit/Yeston Phantom, Juliet Prowse in Mame,<br />

Debbie Reynolds in Molly Brown, Robert Goulet in<br />

La Mancha, and the Tony-winning Carousel. Young is<br />

<br />

<br />

“Leadership in the Arts” Award and was named by<br />

TheatreWeek as one of the “100 Most Powerful People<br />

in Theatre.” The New York Times called him “the David<br />

Merrick of the provinces.” He has received awards from<br />

<br />

Association, the Downtown Houston Association, The<br />

Woodlands Arts Council, Actors’ Equity Association<br />

and the American Federation of Musicians. President<br />

George H. W. Bush awarded him the 2007 “American<br />

<br />

State Commission on the Arts’ Theatre Panel, of which<br />

he is a past chairman.<br />

HALEY LANDERS (Teen Ensemble) is<br />

excited to make her main stage debut in The<br />

Sound of Music. Previous TUTS credits include<br />

Disney’s When You Wish, Geppetto and Son, and<br />

all three years of The Shoemaker and the<br />

Christmas Elves. Other credits: Children of<br />

JULIA LASKOWSKI (Ensemble) has been in<br />

Houston since 1993 performing in opera,<br />

musical theatre and concerts. She starred in<br />

Repertory. She currently performs and teaches<br />

in Houston and Italy. Julia has written two<br />

DOREEN LITVAK (Children’s Ensemble) is<br />

SHAY RODGERS (Choreographer) Began her<br />

life with TUTS at the age of 10. Twenty-three<br />

years later she still calls it home and has<br />

managed the Education program since 2005;<br />

creating an Academy for students dedicated to<br />

musical theatre training. Choreography credits<br />

the revival tour of 42nd Street for its entire twoyear<br />

run, which played The Hobby Center in<br />

2003. He also conducted the Asian tour of 42nd<br />

Street in 2007. Jeff musically directed Madison<br />

Square Garden’s The Wizard of Oz starring<br />

Roseanne, the subsequent national tour, and the<br />

Grammy nominated cast recording starring<br />

Mickey Rooney and Eartha Kitt. He was<br />

associate conductor of the United States<br />

premiere of Sunset Boulevard starring Glenn<br />

Close at the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles.<br />

Jeff spent three years touring with Annie, as<br />

associate conductor of the 2nd National Tour<br />

and conductor of the 4th National Tour. He<br />

served as audition accompanist for the film of<br />

Dreamgirls. Having done countless shows,<br />

working at most of the major regional musical<br />

theatre companies throughout the country, Jeff<br />

enjoys being on staff at the Los Angeles campus<br />

of the American Music and Dramatic<br />

Academy. As a composer his work includes<br />

scores for Jailbirds On Broadway and Wanna<br />

Play?!. With partner Eric Andrist, he cofounded<br />

the Musical Theatre Guild. Born in<br />

Utica, New York, raised in Sacramento,<br />

California, and graduated from the University<br />

of Southern California, Jeff makes his home in<br />

Los Angeles.<br />

CHRISTOPHER “KIT” BOND (Sound<br />

Rebecca has worked with Stages Repertory<br />
