The setting is Sri Lanka, 1980, and it is the season of monsoons.
Fourteen-year-old Amrith is caught up in the life of the
cheerful, well-to-do household in which he is being raised by his
vibrant Auntie Bundle and kindly Uncle Lucky. He tries not to
think of his life “before,” when his doting mother was still alive.
Amrith’s holiday plans seem unpromising: he wants to appear in
his school’s production of Othello and he is learning to type at
Uncle Lucky’s tropical fish business. Then, like an unexpected
monsoon, his cousin arrives from Canada and Amrith’s ordered
life is storm-tossed. He finds himself falling in love with the
Canadian boy. Othello, with its powerful theme of disastrous
jealousy, is the backdrop to the drama in which Amrith finds
himself immersed.
Shyam Selvadurai’s brilliant novels, Funny Boy and Cinnamon
Gardens, have garnered him international acclaim. In this, his first
young adult novel, he explores first love with clarity, humor,
and compassion.
The Mona Lisa Caper is based on true events that began to unfold
on Monday, August 21, 1911, when Vincenzo Perugia shocked
the world by stealing the most famous of the many treasures in
the Louvre.
Though Vincenzo was a thief, he meant well. He simply
wanted to return the painting to the Italian people in the
mistaken belief that it had been stolen from them. Eventually,
inevitably, Vincenzo was captured in Florence and put on trial.
Italians gave him their hearts for his patriotism. In fact, he
received so much food, wine, clothing, and furniture, that he
had to be moved to a larger cell!
Throughout Rick Jacobson’s lively text, Mona Lisa herself
narrates the story of her trip back to the city of her creation.
The playful art Rick has painted along with his wife, Laura
Fernandez, heightens the fun. Not only is it Keystone-Cops
funny, it is a sound introduction to the painting that continues
to delight, amaze, and mystify hundreds of years after Leonardo
da Vinci’s death.
Fifteen-year-old Francis’s father has committed suicide and
nothing will be the same again. Suicide is ugly, unglamorous, and
it is never a solution. Its aftermath is dreadful.
At first, Francis feels a terrible guilt. Could he have been a
better son? What if he hadn’t left his home in Montreal to go on
a brief holiday in New York the weekend it happened? Soon the
guilt turns to anger and then to a sadness so profound that he
thinks he can’t bear it.
After is the map of a year following the suicide of a family
member. In the course of months, with the love of his mother,
with counseling, and with the balm of time, Francis takes his
first steps toward coming to terms with his father’s – and his
family’s – tragedy. After is intensely personal, but it will resonate
with anyone who has faced the loss of a loved one.
This brilliant autobiographical first novel is an acute analysis
of the grieving process. Although it is steeped in Francis’s
sadness, it is ultimately a story of hope.
Secrets
Stories Selected by Marthe Jocelyn
In all their permutations, these unforgettable stories explore
one of the irresistible facets of human nature, the fact that
everyone has a secret. Marthe Jocelyn has selected twelve stories
by several of the best authors in North America to explore the
nature and the power of secrets. Sometimes secrets can be
downright funny – how would you like to be the front person for
your fake, clairvoyant mother? Secrets can also be scary – if you
are pretending that your father is dead so you don’t have to
introduce him to your teacher. And sometimes secrets can break
your heart, and heal it – when they have to do with the ties that
bind generations together.
Contributors include Susan Adach, Anne Carter, Gillian
Chan, Nancy Hartry, Marthe Jocelyn, Julie Johnston, Dayal Kaur
Khalsa, Loris Lesynski, Anne Gray Sarndal, Martha Slaughter,
Teresa Toten, and Elizabeth Winthrop.
From airplane/avión/avion to zigzag/zigzag/zigzag, Marthe Jocelyn
and Tom Slaughter have created a unique ABC for the very
young. The book works perfectly in three languages, English,
Spanish, and French (English, Español, and Français). In each
case, deceptively simple paper cuts will delight the eye while
young readers explore words in three languages.
The book has been carefully constructed to accommodate
each language, including the letters which occur in Spanish, but
not in English or French. Earlier collaborations by Tom
Slaughter and Marthe Jocelyn have received raves from critics.
This new addition to their library is yet another excellent
introduction to modern art, to words, and this time to the fun
of languages.
Young Consuela’s day is marked by the horses she loves. There’s
the clip-clop-clink of the horse that pulls the milk wagon, the quicktrot
clippety-clop of the beautiful brown tea wagon horse, and the
lolop…lolop…lolop of the produce man’s tired gray horse. She knows
them all and shows the hard-working creatures as much kindness
as she can. Finally the time comes when her kindness is rewarded
– with a ride on a very special horse.
At the turn of the 20th century, horses were willing workers,
good company, and common sights on city streets. They pulled
delivery wagons, carted away junk, and brought a smile to many
faces with their familiar presence. Horses would eventually give
way to cars, but nothing will ever replace the sounds and beauty
of the gentle clip-clop horses.
Author Eleanor Koldofsky grew up in Toronto’s Kensington
Market and evokes that long-ago time in this affectionate story.
Noble, Harlan, Argus, and their sister, Tora, are werewolves.
When Ranger Brock found them in the forest after a fire, he
thought they were human babies. Even when he and his wife
realized that the infants were part wolf, they were determined to
raise them as normal children.
In Lone Wolf, a sequel to Wolf Pack, the quartet, now in their
teens, face the same challenges as everyone else their age: Tora
wants desperately to be chosen for the school play. Harlan, who
is smaller than his siblings, is the victim of a bully, and Argus
wants to help his little brother but knows it would humiliate him.
Daily problems are pushed aside when the foursome must unite
against a common enemy; an unscrupulous logging company is
planning to clear-cut the woods in which they run freely – and
secretly – as wolves.
By turns funny and frightening, Lone Wolf is an irresistible
adventure story.
Monsterology: Fabulous Lives of the Creepy, the Revolting, and the Undead is the
most fun anyone can have with some of the nastiest creatures ever
imagined! Who can resist morsels like the fact that “Drakul”
means “son of the dragon” in Romanian, that the first Golem
may have been Enkidu, who appeared in the ancient Epic of
Gilgamesh, and that Frankenstein’s Monster was first inspired by
Mary Shelley’s nightmare?
Governor General’s Award-winner Arthur Slade has gathered
together fifteen scary critters, ranging from Dracula to Golem,
from Frankenstein to Baba Yaga and even a zombie. He provides
facts, real history, imagined history, and lots of jokes to make
these creatures come to life. Slade’s hilarious text presents
delicious imagined gossip, favorite blood types, favorite movies,
and even favorite haunts (you should pardon the expression) with
character descriptions and thoroughly researched background
information.
Lively black-and-white illustrations by Derek Mah make this a
book that is sure to be a hit with every monster-loving reader.
The first night I went to work at the shelter, the attendant said,
“You know they will not rest.”
I stood in the doorway of the dormitory crowded with children.
In the dark, the nightmares would come, but rest would not.
Empowering Mexico’s vulnerable street children is no easy task
when the dangers they face are real and many. But there is
incredible strength in an unfinished story, especially if that
story has a small hero who can overcome great odds. Night after
night, Tales of the Monkey King, begun at dark and never finished
until the next day, were precisely what the children needed. The
brave little monkey, who fought against unspeakable odds but was
never conquered, had come from far away to become their hero.
Through him, many found the strength and courage they needed
to face their living nightmares and cheat the King of Death.
Stunning paintings by Brian Deines underscore the message
and speak to the hero in everyone.
Misha and Marie are thrilled that Christmas is coming. It’s a
frosty night, the neighbors are all invited, and Peter the stable
boy is sweeping the barn in preparation for the dancing to come.
But there’s a disappointment in store. Instead of the beautiful
doll she’d hoped for, the only thing strange old Uncle Nikolai
has for Marie is a wooden nutcracker. Marie thinks it’s a
wonderful gift. Little does she know that it will lead her and her
brother on the adventure of a lifetime.
When Misha and Marie finally go to bed on Christmas Eve,
they sleep fitfully and are beset by nightmares. In one particularly
bad dream, they join forces – unusual for the squabbling
children – and conquer an army that might harm the nutcracker.
Their reward is splendid: they are swept to the realm of the Snow
Queen for a night of wonders.
James Kudelka, the Artistic Director of the National Ballet of
Everyone who has a library card (and those who don’t will want
one after reading this book) will love this fascinating account of
how libraries have evolved. From camels delivering books in
Kenya to information compression today, this is a book that’s
long overdue!
Award-winning librarian Maureen Sawa takes readers on a
breathless ride from the origins of libraries to the first bookshelves,
from pack-horse librarians in Kentucky to the revolution that was
vertical shelving. She presents familiar library heroes like
Gutenberg and Benjamin Franklin and the more obscure ones,
such as Hypatia, the great female librarian of Alexandria killed by
a mob for opposing the teachings of Plato, and Vizier Abdul
Kasem Ismail, the Persian bibliophile who traveled with forty
camels carrying 117,000 books in alphabetical order.
Libraries, past, present, and future, have a history as
fascinating as the books they house. A must-have for every reader!
Why was Fabio sad and snappy?
A brother would make a sad dog happy!
Fabio is an only dog, and though life is good, he longs for a
brother to play with him, to share his toys, and to show off to his
friends. His owners agree: the time has come to get a second dog.
A nasty surprise is in store for Fabio. The dog they bring
home is not the frisky brother of his dreams. It is fat old Gracie,
fresh from the pound. She’s tired, she’s shy, and worst of all,
she’s a girl!
My Sister Gracie has had tremendous international success and
is available in several languages because it is a universal story that
resonates with any child who has wanted a sibling, only to be
surprised that what arrives is not the full-fledged playmate he or
she expected. Gillian Johnson’s lively art and text were inspired
by a beagle-basset named Gracie who was adopted at a very ripe
age from the local SPCA and became a cherished family pet.
GILLIAN JOHNSON’s My Sister Gracie was awarded the Alcuin Design Award
when it was first published in hardcover in 2002, and has earned fans
in Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Iceland, Slovenia and
Venezuela. She has collaborated with author Richard Scrimger,
providing the illustrations for their books about Baby Bun Bun, and
with Linda Maybarduk for her book, James the Dancing Dog. She has also
illustrated Dennis Lee’s The Cat and the Wizard and Thomas Keneally’s
Roos in Shoes. Gillian Johnson is married and has two sons.
PRAISE FOR MY SISTER GRACIE:
“The rhyming tale is enhanced by whimsical watercolor cartoons....
The pictures are humorous…and appealing. An endearing addition
to stories about family relationships and sibling rivalry.” –School
Library Journal
“Sibling rivalry gets funny, nerve-striking treatment…. Johnson combines
witty, Seuss-like language with delightfully silly images.” –Maclean’s
Hannah and the Seven
Dresses
Marthe Jocelyn
Help! Hannah just can’t figure out what to wear. It’s hard to
choose when her mom has made her so many pretty dresses. Maybe
today it should be the red dress with the puffy sleeves and the bow.
Or should she try the bouncy, flouncy purple one? Maybe the
yellow one with the twirly rickrack on the bottom!
Hannah’s plan to match each dress to a particular day of the
week will make methodical readers smile. But the very special
outfit she puts together for her birthday will make even readers
who don’t wear dresses laugh out loud.
Sparkling cloth-collage illustrations make this insightful tale
about a common problem uncommonly fun to read.
MARTHE JOCELYN is an award-winning author and illustrator who
worked for many years as a toy designer before turning her hand to
writing. Her picture book, Hannah’s Collections, was shortlisted for a
Governor General’s Literary Award for illustration. She has written five
novels, one work of nonfiction for older readers, and five picture books.
