Tundra Books Celebrates 40 Years
Tundra is forty! When I grew up, books that reflected me, my friends, and my country were rarities.
Trafalgar Square, the wide Mississippi, or New York City were the “real” places because, after all, they
were important enough to be the settings of the books I loved. With a few exceptions – Green Gables,
Finland Street, and a handful of others – the life I knew was simply not there in the books I read.
Forty years in business is a huge accomplishment, especially for a publishing company, and all
the more so for a children’s publisher. May Cutler, the founder of Tundra, is one of this country’s
great pioneers. The practices she put in place for her new publishing company have since become
standards of the industry. With books that showcased fine artists like William Kurelek, Ted
Harrison, Lindee Climo, and others, she created a literary landscape for Canadian children. By
selling foreign rights to her books, she told the world about Canada. And by bravely publishing
hard-hitting, nonfiction books like A Child in Prison Camp, the first book to be written about the
Japanese internment, she told us the truth about ourselves.
In this, our 40th spring season, we are presenting you with a list that reflects our commitment
to children of all ages. We are publishing two can’t-put-down series: True Horse Stories by first-time
writer Judy Andrekson and Easy-to-Read Spooky Tales (for first-time readers) by veteran Veronika
Martenova Charles. We’ve got a great novel by award-winning author Marthe Jocelyn, and a shelfful
of the terrific picture books that are our backbone, ranging from Ten Old Men and a Mouse, Cary Fagan’s
hilarious story of an unlikely friendship, to Lily and the Mixed-Up Letters, Deborah Hodge’s thoughtful
story about learning disabilities. And, of course, there is nonfiction: from the story of penguins to
the history of candy to an introduction to the creatures who live in our backyards.
Tundra was known from its earliest days for “children’s books as works of art.” We’re embarking
on the next forty years by upholding that tradition this spring. Artist Elizabeth Quan sets down a
long-ago journey in her lovely watercolors. And, together with the McMichael Gallery, we are
excited to introduce children here at home and around the world to one of Canada’s greatest
treasures, Inuit art, in a gorgeous and informative book.
To those of you who have supported Tundra over the years, we thank you for bringing our books
to the children in your lives. To the readers who grew up with Mary of Mile 18 and The Hockey Sweater and
whose children now laugh out loud over The Nose From Jupiter, more thanks. And to those extraordinary,
talented authors and artists who have given Tundra the privilege and the pleasure of publishing their
work, our gratitude!
Juvenile Fiction – Action & Adventure
Ages 5-7
Veronika Martenova Charles
Illustrated by David Parkins
Five first books for fledgling readers that are sure to delight the younger
crowd (and the older one, too). Easy-To-Read Spooky Tales offer a
little shiver of anticipation along with the thrill of accomplishment.
Heavily illustrated and broken into short, easy phrases, each book
features the same three characters telling multicultural stories based on a
cautionary theme. Adults will agree that these books challenge and
encourage children to “go it alone.”
Don’t Open The Door!
Having been warned not to open the door for anyone while Mom
goes to help a neighbor, the three boys try to outdo each other by
telling scary stories about strangers at the door. By the time they
have finished, they have scared themselves under the bed. Stories
in this book come from Bohemia, the Guyanas, and Peru and are
based on the universal theme of not opening the door to strangers.
Don’t Go Into The Forest!
This time the boys find themselves in cottage country making up
spooky tales about staying out of the forest. Tales from the
Philippines and Native American legends are told until the boys
can almost see strange characters at their dinner table that night.
Don’t Go Near The Water!
Having been warned to stay away from the high waters of the local
creek, the boys’ imaginations run as swiftly as the stream. Before
they know it, they have scared themselves silly with stories like The
Children with Green Teeth, from Britain; The Deadly Beach, from Hawaii;
and The Waterman, from Central Europe.
Don’t Go In There!
Ghostly tales of strange things lurking in forbidden places tie
these three stories together. The boys have been warned not to go
into a certain room while they are pet-sitting for the neighbor,
but, of course, their bravado leads to a session of one-upmanship
and the distinct possibility that the cats they are looking after may
not be cats at all. Stories from Russia, the United States, and the
West Indies are highlighted.
Don’t Walk Alone At Night!
Cautionary tales from West Virginia, Africa, and Central Europe
are related by each boy until they are certain Mothman, Monster,
and Ghost are after them. Are they scared? Not enough to admit it,
but they certainly are running for home a little faster than usual.
Judy Andrekson
Illustrated by David Parkins
Tundra introduces the first two books in a new series for young equine
aficionados. Some of the featured horses were bred for glory, some found
notoriety by accident, but all managed to find their way into history and
the hearts of those who knew them. True Horse Stories come
from different countries and eras, they are brief in length, and beautifully
illustrated.
Little Squire: The Jumping Pony
Little Squire was born in an Irish meadow on an early spring day.
The colt was beautifully formed with strong, straight legs and a
pretty head. But due to his small size, it was unlikely he would be
more than a nice child’s riding pony. By the following spring, the
yearling was separated from his mother and turned out to pasture
with the other weanlings. Little Squire wasn’t happy to be away
from his dam so he charged the high stone wall and cleared it
easily. Little Squire had just shown an astonishing side of himself
that would eventually bring him greatness.
Over time, the young horse traded hands, crossed an ocean,
and ended up on the American show-jumping circuit. That was
when he met another diminutive Irish immigrant, Mickey Walsh.
The two were inseparable until, at Mickey’s request, Little
Squire was retired at the top of his game, and while he was still
sound. He went out in a blaze of glory, though, ending his last
performance with Mickey by jumping a six-foot-two fence – riderless
– in front of a packed arena. During the war-torn 30s, Little
Squire had given people something to cheer about.
Miskeen: The Dancing Horse
Miskeen was born in obscurity on a Russian farm, sold to a
traveling circus, and earned a reputation performing in small
towns in the 1980s. He was schooled first as a liberty (rider-less)
horse and then as a “dancing” (dressage) performer. Dancing was
what he did best, and he was often observed trotting on the spot
whenever he heard music. He matured into a magnificent, highly
trained and valuable animal. But then tragedy struck.
Tundra Books | Spring 2007
April
Chapter Book Series
Confined in his stall after an exhausting day of performances
in unbearable heat, Miskeen was spotted by a boy. The boy took up
a training whip and beat the horse mercilessly until, in panic,
Miskeen struck out. The boy was bitten severely, and, in retribution,
Miskeen was ordered to have all his teeth pulled so that he could
never “turn vicious” again. Suddenly the magnificent animal was
disabled, humiliated, unable to eat, and totally worthless to those
who had prized him.
Miskeen would have died, had he not been rehabilitated by a
young British woman named Vicky Malia. He recovered, eventually
rewarding his new owner with private dance performances. It
seemed he still had an ear for music and a memory of grander
days. Miskeen is dancing still.
JUDY ANDREKSON grew up in Nova Scotia with a pen in one hand and
a lead rope in the other. She moved to Alberta at the age of twenty to
pursue her greatest passion – horses, and by her thirties, she had begun
to write seriously. She now works as an educational assistant and writer.
Judy Andrekson lives in Sherwood Park, AB.
Marthe Jocelyn
Winner of the 1st Annual TD Canadian Children’s
Literature Award for Mable Riley
The year is 1924, the heyday of the revived Spiritualist
movement. Fourteen-year-old Annie and her mother are
successful purveyors of psychic chicanery; they move from town
to town, cashing in on the fad for clairvoyant guidance.
When they arrive in Peach Hill, Annie is once again
compelled into her part of the act: she has to pretend that she’s
the village idiot in order to more easily listen in on gossip that
her mother can put to use as a fake seer. But something happens
in Peach Hill. Annie’s tired of missing school, drooling, and
keeping her eyes crossed. This is not the way to attract the kind
of male attention she wants. She decides to drop the guise, but
no sooner than she does, her mother comes up with a new scam.
Now she’s a faith healer and Annie’s troubles have just begun.
This is Marthe Jocelyn at the height of her powers as a
novelist. How it Happened in Peach Hill is by turns funny, suspenseful,
and heartbreaking as it explores the world of those who peddle
hope and comfort for profit.
Cary Fagan
Fresh from their victory over the nasty Kaspar Snit, – who was
last seen trying to steal the fountains of Rome in The Fortress of
Kaspar Snit – the Blande family have certainly earned a rest.
They’re not actually an average family (what average family has
the power to fly?), but they like to relax in front of the TV like
everyone else.
Their favorite show (except for Dad) is the hugely popular
hit, “The Zoomers.” When it’s Zoomer time, mom makes a batch
of popcorn, Solly settles his rat GW on his shoulder, and Eleanor
watches avidly as the Zoomer family of superheroes set off on
their weekly adventure. But Eleanor’s noticed an odd detail: the
director is one I. M. Partankiss. And that’s none other than
Kaspar Snit. Surely he must have reformed? After all, he is
planning to donate a million dollars to his beloved native land,
Verulia. Problem is, “The Zoomers” won’t be seen on TV until a
million dollars has been raised.
The Blande parents are off to a romantic vacation in Tuscany
and Eleanor and Solly are left in the care of their new,
extraordinary nanny, Mrs. Leer, and so the fun begins. The
adventures they embark on are much more exciting than anything
they’ve seen on “The Zoomers.”
The thousands of readers who made The Fortress of Kaspar Snit
such a success will welcome Cary Fagan’s laugh-out-loud sequel.
Not only does this book stand alone as a hilarious story, but it
also introduces the most memorable nanny since Mary Poppins.
After observing penguins in captivity for almost twelve years, EVELYNE
DAIGLE was given an opportunity to study them more closely through a
joint project of Students on Ice and the Montréal Biodôme. Aboard an
icebreaker in the company of both scientists and students, the author
gathered written and visual information on penguins and the
fascinating world in which they live. Inspiration was plentiful. By
adding to the existing knowledge base, this expedition to the end of the
world will benefit the Biodôme team and visitors alike. Evelyne Daigle
lives in Quebec, where she has been a biologist and scientific
interpreter at the Montréal Biodôme since 1992.
Through time and across continents, stories of sweets and their
inventors intrigue and entertain us. Learn about primal sweets –
from honey, sweet milk, and nuts to sugar candy, chocolate, and
“sweet” stories of success.
Sweet! The Delicious Story of Candy takes us through history from
4,000 B.C., when islanders in Papua New Guinea cut sugarcane
for its sap, and 2,600 B.C., when the first-known beekeepers
produced honey to embalm the dead, to 500 A.D., when the
Chinese made pear and plum syrups from unripe fruit, and all
the way through to the world’s first chocoholics and modern-day
candy factories.
From cravings to the scoop on ice cream, Ann Love and Jane
Drake present a comprehensive and irresistible story of candy
through the ages, complemented by a detailed timeline and
AWAKENING THE DRAGON
“Arlene Chan and Song Nan Zhang
explore the many manifestations
of the dragon boat festival –
Zhang in highly detailed,
wonderfully vibrant paintings …”
– Globe and Mail
In ancient times, the Chinese saw the dragon as both a protector
and a threat, able to bring on rain or cause droughts. To honor
this powerful creature, people created long narrow boats that
they raced in an annual rainmaking festival.
From the wearing of fragrant pouches and the consumption of
rice dumplings, to the thrilling dragon boat races today, the dragon
boat festival is a celebration of Chinese traditions all over the world.
Arlene Chan, a respected librarian and an experienced
dragon boat racer, explores the origins of the festival, its
customs, and dragon boat races themselves. Beautifully detailed
illustrations by Song Nan Zhang let you experience the beauty
and energy of this ancient festival.
SOS
Stories of Survival
True tales of disaster, tragedy, and courage
Ed Butts
Everyone’s life is touched at some time by disaster. But some disasters
loom so large they are international events. The stories of those
who live through such devastating events such as earthquakes,
tsunamis, hurricanes, fires, and floods are both heartbreaking
and compelling. Often they are inspiring and uplifting.
SOS: Stories of Survival tells the tales of young survivors of such
disasters – teenage coal miners trapped deep below the surface of
the earth in Springhill, Nova Scotia; children who ran to escape
the poisonous exploding gases spewing from Mont Pelee on
Martinique; teens who rode the roofs of their homes in
Pennsylvania’s roaring Johnstown Flood; and youngsters who
survived, but still suffer from, the nuclear accident in
Chernobyl.
The synagogue was once a busy, bustling place, but now only ten
old men come to tend it and pray each day. Then one day, a little
scritch-scratch betrays the first new member in years: a tiny mouse
who has taken up residence among the holy books. Of course, a
trap must be set, but who will do it? Al volunteers, but in the
morning the mouse is still there, and is just a little more
appealing than he was before.
Day after day, the men become more engaged, until the
mouse has a bed, pictures on the wall, and a little carpet, not to
mention all the treats the men bring. Then comes the biggest
surprise of all. He is a she, giving the ten old men reason to
celebrate with peach schnapps – and to plan a trip to the country
where they find the perfect place to release their numerous
charges. Back at the synagogue, fall turns to winter. The ten old
men miss their mice until a little scritch-scratch….
Full of gentle humor and witty truisms, Cary Fagan’s Ten Old
Men and a Mouse will delight both the young and old. Illustrations
by Gary Clement heighten the fun.
she has very important strengths and talents. With hard work and
new confidence, Lily surprises everyone – even herself – by the
time the parents come to hear the kids read.
Gentle illustrations by France Brassard realistically portray
the fear, isolation, and low self-esteem that children with dyslexia
can experience. Deborah Hodge’s Lily and the Mixed-up Letters is a
reassuring read for any child in need of a boost in confidence.
Elizabeth Quan’s father had made a success in the New World,
but he longed for his home in China. So in the early 1920’s, he
and his family set out on an arduous trip to the far side of the
world. By train, ship, ferry, cart, and on foot, Elizabeth, her
parents, and her brothers and sisters set off from Toronto to a
village in China to visit the grandmother they have never met.
From the mountain of luggage to the whales breaching in the
Pacific and geishas on wooden sandals on the cobbled streets of
Yokohama, Elizabeth Quan describes sights that would captivate
any child. But hers is also a journey of personal discovery. Did
she fit in in Canada, where her straight dark hair and even the
foods she ate set her apart? Would she fit in in China where she
was just as different to the people she met?
In the course of her family’s travels she learns that home is a
state of mind and that the moon can find us, no matter where we
are.The rhythms of travel and the longing for connection are
conveyed in lyrical text and lovely watercolors in a truly
memorable book.
Inuit Art is a fascinating and beautiful introduction to the art of the
north. Focusing on several important works of art from the
McMichael Canadian Art Collection, curators Shelley Falconer
and Shawna White will take you on an impressive journey through
Nunavut’s artistic landscape. The evolving character of the north
is explored through the lens of some of Canada’s most significant
Inuit artists, past and present. Included are eight different works
from sculpture to prints, each highlighted with introductions to
the artists, the materials they’ve used, geography, legends, and
stories. Photographs and maps, together with intriguing facts, give
the reader insight into the artists’ lives, communities, and working
conditions along with brief histories of the region.
Did you know?
• Cape Dorset boasts the largest number of artists per capita in
Canada (22.7 percent – almost one-quarter of the labor force
and thirty times the national average!)
• The word Eskimo is a derogatory term meaning “eaters
of raw flesh”
• Some Inuit artists quarry stone for their sculptures in the
winter, but have to wait until the summer to bring it back to
their workshops
• An igloo uses the same design principles found in the great
cathedrals of Europe
• According to legends, the stone figures, called Inukshuks, protect
travelers and point them to the safest pathway
• The Inuit have been carving for over 4,000 years
