Richard Ungar
Richard Ungar balances two different worlds very well.
A practicing lawyer by profession, he devotes his leisure
hours to painting, and he takes this hobby very
seriously.
He has drawn since childhood, entertaining his friends with sketches of cartoon characters. Richard
studied painting at the Ontario College of Art and under the tutelage of watercolour artists Frank Webb,
Christopher Schink and Gordon Mackenzie. He also took a five month sabbatical to study in France and at
the Jerusalem School of Fine Art.
His work can be found in corporate and private collections in Ontario and in private collections in New
York, British Columbia, and Israel. He frequently shows his art in partnership with fellow lawyers and
judges.
His first book Rachel Captures the Moon, published in 2001, was praised by Publishers Weekly: “with dense,
jewel-toned watercolors and colored-pencil illustrations, and characterizations and perspectives
reminiscent of Chagall and other Jewish visual folklorists, Ungar swiftly and affectionately transports
readers to a mythical, long-ago world.”
The second book in the series, Rachel’s Gift, captures the spirit of Passover, teaching the timeless lesson
that the best way to reap blessings is to bestow kindness. The Toronto Sun called Rachel’s Gift, “…[a]
wholesome tale [that] promotes caring and sharing with light-hearted humour and a rich, intense palette
of bright, warm colours…”
Rachel’s Library, the third installment in the series, will be published in Fall 2004.
Born in Montreal, Richard Ungar now lives with his wife and two sons in Toronto.
