ITS for Public Transport Management<br />

In Italy, Local Public Transport is a key priority for Local Administrations. Making Public Transport<br />

more accessible and attracting for users is the first, fundamental step to realise the objectives of a<br />

sustainable mobility.<br />

ITS implemented at local level in order to improve service offering,<br />

show that ITS play an essential role to attain a sustainable<br />

mobility. ITS brings benefits not only to the citizen, but also to<br />

market and innovation.<br />

Relevant best pratices have been realised in many <strong>Italia</strong>n cities as<br />

Rome, Milan, Turin, Naples, Perugia, Brescia, Florence, Livorno,<br />

ecc, regarding advanced AVL/AVM systems and innovative<br />

ticketing, with the aim of making public transport more attractive<br />

and comfortable for users.<br />

ITS for Motorway Traffic Management<br />

Italy has a long tradition concerning ITS for Motorway Traffic<br />

Management. Motorway operators are actively involved in many<br />

research and implementation projects at National and European<br />

level. The objective is that of guaranteeing the full<br />

interoperability of applications.<br />

Advanced systems for detecting data flows are installed along<br />

the whole motorway network. They include: video-cameras,<br />

inductive loops and ultrasounds and microwave based systems.<br />

Detected data are transmitted to motorway operators Traffic<br />

Control Centres, together with data coming from weather<br />

monitoring systems. 240 monitoring stations are totally installed.<br />

The control Centres process information and send it to travellers<br />

through VMS, radio, internet, GSM, etc.<br />

Traffic Control Centres are connected among<br />

them and with the CCISS, the National<br />

Information and Road Safety Coordination<br />

Centre, through the protocol Datex.<br />
