In 2005-2006 the research was focussed on four studies:
Research into the Italian ITS Market: A productive present picture and prediction of
the future.
The situation of ITS Market Demand for Goods Transport in an extra-urban setting;
The situation of ITS Market Demand for Goods Transport in an urban setting;
The situation of ITS Market Demand for infomobility systems/services for Goods
Transport in an urban and extra-urban setting.
Survey on the Italian ITS market
TTS Italia and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in 2004 promoted a study aimed at
investigating the National ITS market. The study lasted approximately ten months and was conducted
using research methods such as structured questionnaires and has permitted the tracing of a map of
the supply sector for Italian ITS Systems as well as for certain areas of demand (Local
Administrations, Public transport companies, infrastructure managers, interports), in terms of present
economic values, predicted investments and the prospects of short/medium term development.
With regard to supply, the results obtained were also compared with data concerning the ITS market
in the three main global areas of interest (Europe, United States and Japan), in order to show the
present position of the national supply in the global ITS market, and the prospects for development in
a time-frame of six years.
The research revealed the positive development of the Italian ITS sector whether in terms of turnover
or employment. The final results of the survey were presented by TTS Italia in a public conference
held on 5 May 2005.
It is important to underline that Italy was the first country to promote a research aimed at the
economic characterisation in the national ITS sector. This confirms the originality of the study not only
on an Italian level but on an international one and its representation of a unique model for Public
Administrations in other countries.
Survey on ITS Market Demand for Goods Transport in an extra-urban setting
The aim of the survey was to understand the ITS market demand for goods transport in an extra-
setting in terms urban of:
Present diffusion;
Expected benefits;
Predicted growth in the short-medium term;
Market sectors of major growth;
The study was carried out in collaboration with the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and with the
Autotransporters Association ANITA, FAI and UNIONCAMERE who made available the databases of
their associates. 345 goods transport companies with a fleet of over 20 vehicles were contacted and
sent targeted questionnaires. The response rate was 54.2%.
From the obtained results it was verified that in 40% of the companies, 80% of their vehicles were
installed with ITS devices. The benefits revealed by the companies regarded the following factors:
