The <strong>Trinidad</strong> and Tobago<br />

Exhibition at World Expo<br />

Shanghai <strong>2010</strong> opened on<br />

Saturday May 1st and will close on<br />

October 31, <strong>2010</strong>. The 320 square<br />

metre booth is strategically located<br />

at <strong>the</strong> entrance to <strong>the</strong> CARICOM<br />

pavilion, itself part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> overall<br />

Americas Square, which also includes<br />

pavilions <strong>of</strong> North America, Canada<br />

and various Latin American nations.<br />

Designed by architect Darren<br />

Braithwaite <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Trinidad</strong> and Tobago, <strong>the</strong> modern,<br />

stylish booth (pictured) in shades<br />

<strong>of</strong> grey, white and red with hints<br />

<strong>of</strong> black was designed to avoid<br />

<strong>the</strong> traditional island <strong>the</strong>me <strong>of</strong><br />

palm trees and thatched ro<strong>of</strong>s and<br />

definitely makes a statement about<br />

this country’s status as a business,<br />

energy and industrial powerhouse.<br />

The <strong>Trinidad</strong> and Tobago booth is<br />

laid out in <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> a pan, with a<br />

large open central area with smaller<br />

semi-enclosed spaces radiating<br />

outward. Three illuminated circles<br />

cut into <strong>the</strong> floor with graphic<br />

imagery and photos depicting<br />

Innovative People, Investment<br />

Opportunities and Island Paradise.<br />

The most<br />

striking features<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exhibition<br />

space are five<br />

sweeping curved<br />

walls or “pillars”,<br />

which contain<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation on<br />

<strong>the</strong> major urban<br />

centers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nation – Port<br />

<strong>of</strong> Spain, Arima/Sangre Grande,<br />

Chaguanas, Scarborough and San<br />

Fernando - and <strong>the</strong>se speak to <strong>the</strong><br />

overall Expo <strong>2010</strong> <strong>the</strong>me ‘Better<br />

City, Better Life’. The walls behind<br />

each pillar portray elements <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> country’s cultural, economic<br />

and industrial life through large,<br />

descriptive photographs spanning<br />

<strong>the</strong> entire length <strong>of</strong> each wall.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> booth’s entrance is an<br />

In<strong>for</strong>mation kiosk where activities<br />

such as product sales, promotional<br />

items, giveaway and in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

services are provided. Across<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Info Booth is a <strong>the</strong>atre<br />

and entertainment area where<br />

local films and music videos are<br />

shown. The booth also contains<br />

a business or VIP area where<br />

visitors interested in learning more<br />

about investment and tourism<br />

opportunities are hosted.<br />

Inside <strong>the</strong> Exhibition area are:<br />

• Three interactive kiosks at<br />

which visitors are able to obtain<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation on <strong>Trinidad</strong> and Tobago<br />

in Mandarin and English<br />

• Carnival costumes displayed on<br />

mannequins<br />

• The Evolution <strong>of</strong> Pan exhibit also<br />

features a solo pan player who<br />

per<strong>for</strong>ms daily<br />

• 3D display model <strong>of</strong> Port <strong>of</strong> Spain<br />

• Brochures in both English and<br />

Mandarin<br />

• Two product display units<br />

• One electronic display board on<br />

which product logos and special<br />

events are displayed.<br />

Shanghai <strong>2010</strong> is staffed by six<br />

representatives from some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

following agencies:<br />

• Evolving TecKnologies and Enterprise<br />

Development Company (eTecK)<br />

• Ministry <strong>of</strong> Trade and Industry (MTI)<br />

• Tourism Development Company (TDC)<br />

• Tobago House <strong>of</strong> Assembly (THA)<br />

• Business Development Company (BDC)<br />

• <strong>Trinidad</strong> and Tobago Coalition <strong>of</strong><br />

Services Industries (TTCSI)<br />

Under <strong>the</strong> aegis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CARICOM/<br />

Chinese Government Financial<br />

Assistance Agreement one staff<br />

member <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Trinidad</strong> and<br />

Tobago Booth and one staff member<br />

with accounting skills is shared<br />

among <strong>the</strong> CARICOM group<br />

eTecK, as National Coordinator <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Trinidad</strong> and Tobago Exhibition<br />

acts as <strong>the</strong> liaison <strong>for</strong> Head Office<br />

operations in <strong>Trinidad</strong> and Tobago,<br />

<strong>the</strong> CARICOM Secretariat and<br />

<strong>the</strong> World Expo Organisers. Their<br />

responsiblilities include overall<br />

management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhibition,<br />

scheduling <strong>of</strong> special events, staff<br />

accommodation, banking activities,<br />

business activity scheduling, etc.<br />
