Arctic cold reigns,
but it’s filled with light and warmth
Welcome to Kiruna Lapland. A place unlike any other, offering
more than you would expect – existence on nature’s terms.
Ma n y o f t h e p r i d e s a n d j o y s of winter are
found in Kiruna Lapland. Here, the polar
night reigns, suffusing our high mountains
and deep valleys, metre-deep blanket of
snow and unique town centre with peaceful
blue light, and the dancing northern lights
in the heavens are no unusual spectacle.
After winter, there is the intensive spring
sun with its promise of light and warmth.
The days grow longer, and downhill skiing
in the midnight sun in June is a definite
highlight.
The fascinating mountain world offers
mighty experiences, some in connection
with our excellent mountain centres. How
about a fantastic northern lights phenomenon
or ice climbing up frozen waterfalls?
Other adventures also await in this land
without roads – one of Europe’s last wildernesses.
Remember to book in time. Many people are
looking for experiences out of the ordinary.
ICEHOTEL, InfoMine and Esrange are all
unique, well-known and easily accessible
attractions. Kiruna’s proximity to Norway
and the Atlantic Coast also allows you to
combine these visits with another fantastic
experience, namely, seeing the mythical
killer whales.
Comfort or simplicity? Action or relaxation?
Whatever you’re looking for you’ll
find it here. The range of accommodation,
food and experiences is wide and flexible
– in Kiruna as well as the mountains. Try
things, under safe conditions, that you have
only dreamt of.
The glittering snow and caressing sun,
the cold, the warm atmosphere, the expanses
and the mountains, the tranquillity and
harmony – together they offer a completeness
you will never forget.
Northern lights
- a colourful and sparkling natural
phenomenon
t h i s my t h i c a l, almost magical, light is a
fantastic experience! Green, blue, purple
and red explode in a spectacle of colours
like veils draping the heavens. What are we
actually seeing?
Charged particles, plasma, thrown out
into space from the sun. It is called solar
wind. The solar wind collides with atoms
in the earth’s atmosphere. Most of the solar
wind hits the atmosphere at the poles, as it
follows the earth’s magnetic field. Energy is
then released in the form of light, namely
polar light.
Kiruna’s proximity to the North Pole makes
it an ideal place for northern lights. In
fact, it means that we have northern lights
all the year round, day and night, whatever
the temperature and weather. It may
be, however, that it is not visible from just
where you are because it is too light, e.g.,
in the middle of the day or in the summer
(then we have midnight sun) or because it is
overcast with lots of clouds in the way.
To experience this light phenomenon and
get away from the city lights, join us by dog
team, snowmobile or horse for a tour with
a difference out into the wilderness. A new
option is to visit the Aurora Sky Station
located at the top of Mount Nuolja in the
little mountain village of Abisko, approx
93 km north-west of Kiruna. Take the cableway
that runs up to Aurora Sky Station
several nights a week, and learn more about
the northern lights and enjoy the amazing
views. No two northern lights are the same,
and who knows, if you listen very carefully
you may hear a crackle!
