The Texas State <strong>Archives</strong> preserves and documents <strong>the</strong> heritage<br />

and culture of Texas by identify<strong>in</strong>g, collect<strong>in</strong>g and mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

available for research <strong>the</strong> permanently valuable official records<br />

of Texas government, as well as o<strong>the</strong>r significant historical<br />

resources. Ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> official record of Texas government,<br />

<strong>the</strong> State <strong>Archives</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes archival government records dat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

back to <strong>the</strong> 18th century, as well as newspapers, journals,<br />

books, manuscripts, photographs, historical maps and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

historical resources. These records ensure that all three<br />

branches of Texas government are accountable to <strong>the</strong> people. Taken<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> hold<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> Texas State <strong>Archives</strong> provide a<br />

historical foundation for present-day governmental actions and are<br />

an important resource for Texas studies.<br />

Legislative records are public records; <strong>the</strong>y are owned by <strong>the</strong> people of Texas. The Texas<br />

State <strong>Archives</strong> holds <strong>the</strong> records <strong>in</strong> trust for <strong>the</strong> people of Texas.<br />
