I. Introduction
Intrinsically base deactivated (IBD) phases are an exciting new class of reversed-phase packings that
contain a polar group within, or intrinsic to, the hydrocarbon bonded chain. In contrast to conventional
C18 phases, IBD packings retain solutes not only by hydrophobic interactions, but also by polar
attractive forces between the stationary phase and the analyte.
The Ultra IBD phase was designed to address some of the shortcomings associated with conventional
C18 packings. First, the Ultra IBD phase retains polar solutes that are not well retained on C18 columns.
This is possible because IBD phases contain a polar group, not available on C18 phases, that can attract
polar analytes. Second, the Ultra IBD phase furnishes unique selectivity compared to C18 columns.
Again, this is due to the polar group of the IBD structure. Third, the Ultra IBD phase does not collapse,
