Managing For Success
Managing for Success is designed to:
enable managers to achieve measurable improvements in business performance
change behaviours to deliver more effective management of people
enable managers to implement business improvements through ‘lean’ practices.
The Managing for Success programme is suitable for all managers who currently carry out functional roles in
technical, financial, operational or commercial areas, and report to a senior manager or director, such as production
managers, financial controllers and sales managers. It is also suitable for those managers who work in smaller
companies who may not have had previous development opportunities.
Leadership Development
Companies are required to nominate a line manager or senior manager who will attend the introductory workshop and
support the development of the participating manager throughout the programme. To complete the programme,
delegates must attend 9 days off-the-job training over approximately 12 months. Overnight residence during each
module block is expected. In addition, delegates are required to carry out ongoing project-based work over a period of
up to 15 months, enabling them to practice new skills, implement their learning and realise improvements from day
one. Evidence gathering for the NVQ will be an integral part of these projects.

The Leadership Development Programme is designed to help companies achieve a modern and productive
workplace culture, to improve business success and stay competitive. Developing the skills and knowledge of team
leaders, managers and supervisors is vital to achieving this.
The time requirement for candidates to complete the programme is 9 days off-the-job training over approximately 9
months. The programme combines first-class training with on-the-job assessment in one easy to access package:

all practical arrangements and administration are taken care of, including NVQ unit registration and certification
training and assessment is delivered, wherever possible, at times and durations that are most convenient to your
company
full tutor and mentoring support is provided throughout
The Leadership Development Programme incorporates the Health & Safety Passport PLUS. This is the industry’s
certification scheme that ensures employees at a supervisory level have the ability to support health and safety
procedures and ensure the effective implementation of good health and safety practices throughout the workplace.

The programme is designed to help employees develop the essential personal and occupational skills that will enable
them to be an effective teamworker. The time requirement for candidates to complete the programme is 5 days off-thejob
training over approximately 5 months.

Health & Safety Passport Plus
An advanced Health & Safety Passport programme to:
enable employees in positions of responsibility to manage workplace health and safety
promote a safe working culture throughout the business.

The Metals Industry Health & Safety Passport PLUS builds on the Health & Safety Passport for operatives, to ensure
employees at a supervisory level have the ability to support health and safety procedures and ensure the effective
implementation of health and safety practices throughout the workplace.
The programme comprises of:
3 day training course covering the essential elements of managing workplace health and safety and promoting a safe
working culture, and delivered by a registered metals industry training provider
Course modules include:
• Health and safety history • Manual handling assessment • Toolbox talks
• The Health and Safety at Work Act • Accident causes and prevention • Noise at work regulations
• Health and safety legislation • Health and safety monitoring • Health and safety consultation
• Health and safety policies
• Human behaviour in the workplace
• Display screen equipment regulations • Communication of health and safety information
• COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health)
Knowledge test - administered and monitored by Metskill.
Implementation of a company health and safety improvement plan with on-site support from a qualified assessor over a 3
month period to verify that the knowledge learnt is being applied in the workplace, and leading to the NVQ level 3
“Promote a Health & Safety Culture in the Workplace” unit award. Candidates will produce a portfolio of evidence to meet
the requirements of the NVQ unit.

Health & Safety Passport
The Passport is designed to be suitable for all employees in shop floor, operator or teamworker roles, irrespective of their
existing skills and learning capabilities.
2 day training course - covering the essential elements of health and safety law and safe working practice, and delivered
by a registered metals industry training provider.
Course modules include:
• The need for safe working • Safe systems of work and work permits
• Accident causes and prevention • The environment
• Health and safety legislation • Safety standards
• Organisation
• Personal protective equipment
• Assessing and controlling hazards and risks
Knowledge test - administered and monitored by Metskill.
Workplace assessment - with two assessment visits and support from a qualified assessor over a 3 month period to
verify that the knowledge learnt is being applied in the workplace, and leading to the NVQ level 2 unit.
Metallurgy for Non-Metallurgists
