Page D3 B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science Integrated Undergraduate- Graduate (IUG) Degree Program Proposal Executive Summary A. Objectives of the Proposed IUG Program The objectives of the Integrated Undergraduate Graduate Program in Computer Science include: 1. To offer qualified students the opportunity to earn two degrees in five years. In particular, IUG students may count up to 12 credits towards both their B.S. and M.S. degree requirements. 2. To permit coherent planning of studies through the graduate degree, with advising informed by not only the requirements of the baccalaureate program, but also the longerrange goals of the graduate degree. 3. To introduce students earlier to the rigors of both graduate study and graduate faculty. 4. To make the resources of the Graduate School available to IUG students. 5. To allow students with IUG status to benefit from their association with graduate students whose level of work and whose intensity of interest and commitment parallel their own. 6. To allow students to coordinate as well as concurrently pursue the two degree programs, which enables them to achieve greater depth and comprehension than if the degrees are pursued sequentially. B. Summary of Changes 1. Undergraduate Bulletin description of Computer Science program is revised to include the proposed IUG program. 2. Graduate Bulletin description of Computer Science program is revised to include the proposed IUG program. 3. Three existing graduate courses are being revised; proposals for these minor revisions were created via the Course Submission and Consultation System (CSCS) and have been submitted for expedited review by the Subcommittee on New and Revised Programs and Courses: o MA SC 505: The course prefix and title are being changed. This course will now be COMP 505: Theory of Computation. o COMP 511: Prerequisite is revised o COMP 520: Prerequisite is revised This proposal can also be found online at http://cs.hbg.psu.edu/iug-proposal/. ii
