CHAPTER 1: REQUIREMENTS
1.1 Physical examination requirements
a. A current designation appropriate physical examination is required before chamber exposure.
1.2 Category “I” Physiological Training Requirements:
a. Category “I” personnel include:
(1) Aircrew assigned specific duties necessary for the safe conduct of the mission; e.g., pilot,
copilot, navigator, flight engineer, flight directors, C-9 test conductors (FCOD personnel) and
flight surgeons.
(2) Astronauts, payload specialists, suited subject, and any test or suited subject involved in an
exposure or flight requiring a Level I or II medical coverage as mandated by the JSC Committee
for the Protection of Human Subjects.
(3) Chamber personnel working in hypobaric chambers with duties of test person/subject, lock
observers, rescue personnel and inside observers who are exposed to hypobaric environments
(4) Escape Operators, Advanced Crew Escape Suit (ACES) suited subjects – pressurized.
b. Category “I” Aircrew members shall complete an 8-hour initial course conducted by the Center's
Physiological Training Unit to include an altitude chamber training flight. Refresher training is required
at 4-year intervals (this applies to training conducted on or after March 1, 2005).
c. Other Category “I” personnel involved in flying or working in hypobaric chambers exposed
to altitudes greater than 10,000 ft. (less than 10.1 psi) shall complete an 8-hour course conducted
by the Center’s Physiological Training Unit to include an altitude chamber training flight.
Refresher training is required at 4-year intervals.
d. Category “I” test subjects and observers working in hypobaric chambers exposed to
altitudes less than 10,000 ft. (greater than 10.1 psi), do not require physiological training.
1.3 Category “II” Physiological Training Requirements:
a. Category “II” personnel include:
(1) Personnel supporting hypobaric chamber test operations involving the exposure of humans to
reduced barometric pressure and/or pressure suit and life support system testing in facilities that
may expose humans to reduced barometric pressure. Duties include test directors, test safety
officers, medical monitors, crew support conductors, test conductors, test articles environmental
control system monitors, lock operators, chamber and lock environmental control system
operators, pressure suit engineers, and pressure suit technicians.
b. Category “II” test directors and pressure suit technicians shall complete a 4-hour initial course
conducted by the Center’s Physiological Training Unit to include an altitude chamber training
flight. Refresher training is required at 3-year intervals.
c. Category “II” engineering personnel directly involved in the design, development, testing, and
certification of reduced pressure space suits and life support equipment within the Crew and
Thermal Systems Division shall complete a 4-hour initial course conducted by the Center’s
Physiological Training Unit to include an altitude chamber training flight. Refresher training is
required at 3-year intervals.
d. Other Category “II” personnel having direct responsibility for external chamber operations and
for the health and safety of individuals exposed to reduced barometric pressure shall complete
a 4-hour initial course conducted by the Center’s Physiological Training Unit that does not
include an altitude chamber flight. A 4-hour refresher training course is required at 3-year
intervals.
1.4 Category “III” Physiological Training Requirements:
a. Category “III” personnel include:
(1) Qualified non-crewmembers to include principal investigators, research assistants, observers,
photographers, videographers, media representatives, students and teachers participating in
the Reduced Gravity Flight Opportunities Program (RGFOP).
b. Category “III” Qualified Non-crewmembers shall complete a 2-hour physiology lecture
conducted by the Center’s Physiological Training Unit. Altitude chamber flight training is not
required. A current Flight Medical Clearance Form (FMCF) is required prior to flight. A physical
examination is not required unless it is warranted based on review of the FMCF. A 2-hour
refresher is required at 3-year intervals.
barometric pressure with the physiological stresses encountered
and how to successfully overcome these stresses. In addition, it
is intended to ensure the proper understanding and use of
equipment designed to minimize these physiological effects.
A facility in which the absolute pressure may be reduced below
ambient pressure for the purposes of research, testing
equipment, and training personnel.
