The idea behind the Pak-US Science and
Technology Cooperative Programme is to
bring entrepreneurship and innovation in R&D
and make it relevant to the socio-economic
development of the country. The meeting was
followed by a display showcasing Pak-US
collaborative research projects.
The Sectoral meeting on S&T of the Pakistan US
Strategic Dialogue was held at Islamabad on June 8,
2010. It was co-chaired from Pakistan side by Mr. K. B.
Rind, Secretary Ministry of Science and Technology and
Dr. Sohail Naqvi, Executive Director, Higher Education
Commission (HEC). The US side was led by Dr. Kerri-Ann
Jones, Assistant Secretary, US Department of State. Dr.
Javaid R. Laghari, Chairman, HEC was also present on
the occasion.
The idea behind the Pak-US Science and Technology
Cooperative Programme is to bring entrepreneurship
and innovation in R&D and make it relevant to the socioeconomic
development of the country. The meeting was
followed by a display showcasing Pak-US collaborative
research projects.
This programme is a joint effort of the Governments of
Pakistan and the US under the Pak-US Agreement of
Science and Technology signed in 2003 and its major
aim is to share the benefits of research in different fields
of science and technology through mutual cooperation
in S&T organizations as well as universities in both the
countries. The programme has improved the capacity of
Pakistan's public and private sector universities and S&T
organizations to support industry competitiveness.
Speaking on the occasion of Showcasing of Joint R&D
projects, Dr. Laghari said that collaboration in S&T is
only the first step towards the long way ahead before
benefit of this research trickle down to the people, and
the 31 projects undertaken by Pakistani universities and
R&D organizations with US partners will improve the
quality, relevance or capacity of education and research.
The ongoing projects in the fields of water, agriculture,
biotechnology range from the development of strategic
model for improvement of Construction Project

Dr. Kerri-Ann Jones said that these joint projects are
proof of the rich partnership between the two
countries. She said that discussions during her
current visit have been very productive. “We can do
much more together and explore new ideas to work
on,” she added. Each and every project under this
programme is relevant to the socio-economic
challenges of Pakistan, and the research conducted
has an ultimate impact on the lives of the ordinary
citizens.”
Mr. K. B. Rind said that the selected projects of R&D
will focus on cost-effective measures that ensure
advantages of the competition to producers and
consumers alike through quality products and
economical prices. “We cannot afford to limit the
benefits of innovations to laboratories alone, our joint
efforts should be focusing on redressing the problem
of the common people and to enhance good-will
among people of the two countries” he said. The
meeting stressed the need for centres of excellence,
transfer of technology at the regional levels, sharing
and promoting successful S&T models between
Pakistan and the US for socio-economic uplift of the
people.
In 2003, the Ministry of Science and Technology
(MoST) and the US Department of State signed the
S&T cooperation agreement. In 2005, the USAID
joined with MoST and HEC to support the joint
Pakistan-US Science and Technology Cooperation
Programme. This amalgamation of intelligence was
focused to uplift the country's research sector. The
first, second, third and fourth batches of the
Programme were launched in 2005, 2006, 2007 and
August 2009, respectively.
The US delegation later took a tour of the National
University of Sciences and Technology facilities and
US sponsored health projects entitled “Hepatitis C
Virus Management in Pakistan” and “Capacity
Building of Lady Health Workers in Rural Mardan”.

Farhan Muhammad Authors
15 Papers during PhD Studies
Farhan Muhammad has been awarded PhD
degree by the Pakistan Institute of
Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS)
for his work on the Inherent safety of an
MTR i.e a nuclear reactor controlling itself
without any outside interference, under the
supervision of Dr. Asad Majid, Deputy Chief
Engineer, PIEAS.
During his PhD studies, Dr. Farhan achieved an extraordinary
distinction of publishing 15 papers in European and USA based
journals of International Science Index such as “Annals of
Nuclear Energy”, “Nuclear Engineering and Design” and
“Progress of Nuclear Energy”.
These journals are rated among world's top journals in the field
of Nuclear Engineering. The total impact factor of his
publications is 9.119. Such an achievement is unprecedented in
Pakistan and very rare in advanced countries.
The scholar joined PIEAS in January 2005 as PhD student and
successfully defended his work in November 2009. His research
has been published in the form of thesis entitled “Analysis for
Enhancement of Inherent Safety of an MTR”.
The panel of external examiners comprised Prof. Dr. Sümer ªahin
Gazi University, Turkey, Dr. Fatih Alim Turkish Atomic Energy
Authority, Prof. Dr. Rizwan-uddin of University of Illinios, USA.
The internal examiners panel constituted of Dr. Zafarullah
Koreshi, Air University, Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed and Dr. Sikander
Majid Mirza both from PIEAS.
HEC Scholar Publishes
Book on Ablative
Nano-Composites
Nadeem Iqbal, an HEC scholar, who is pursuing his PhD
studies at the School of Chemical and Materials
Engineering (SCME), National University of Sciences
and Technology (NUST) has published a book entitled
“Ablative Nano-Composites” with a leading international
publisher, VDM.

Scholar Completes
PhD from UK

successfully defended his
PhD thesis from the
University of Manchester,
UK under the supervision
of Dr. Richard E. P.
Winpenny.
The scholar was selected under “Overseas
Scholarship Scheme for PhD in Selected Fields”
and proceeded to UK to pursue his research in
September 2006. The title of his thesis was
“Metal Cages From Antimonate-Phosphonate
Ligands.”
Dr. Shoaib was declared as first-rate student
and his achievements were highly appreciated
during his study period. Scholar's supervisor
reported that he obtained a plenty of new
results and was able to write the manuscripts
for five research papers in reputable journals of
Royal Society of Chemistry, UK.
Shoaib, a native of Gujranwala, passed his
Masters from Punjab University, Lahore and
completed his MPhil from Quaid-i-Azam
University, Islamabad.
After completion of the PhD studies, the scholar
has returned to Pakistan and joined his parent
organization.
Ablatives are the materials which enabled mankind to
explore space and re-enter safely apart from imparting
the capacity to deliver ICBMS. The cited book draws
from the splendid practical work performed during the
O
course of his studies. Plasma flame at 15,000 C
employing a data logging system generated the primary
data. The performance of the ablative was enhanced by
nano-ceramics and substantial increment in
transpiration cooling.
The Ablative finds gainful application as an effective fire
proof material for civil structures and buildings as well. “I
am grateful to the Higher Education Commission for the
kind support extended to me for higher studies. I am
also grateful to NUST for providing an excellent
environment and encouragement to carry out my work”,
said Nadeem.

He joined Geological Survey of
Pakistan, Karachi in March 1996
and was the member of a team who
explored the Thar Coal Field

(World´s 7 largest coal field) and
issued three appraisal reports.
Later he joined OGDCL in October
2001 and did field mapping for
three years.

University of Leoben, Austria under
the supervision of Dr. Walter
Vortisch.
He has rejoined his parent
organization, the Exploration
Department of Oil and Gas
Development Company Limited
(OGDCL).
Dr. Gakkhar was selected and sent
abroad for studies under “Overseas
Scholarship Scheme for PhD in
Selected Fields”. The title of his
thesis is “Sedimentology and
Organic Geochemistry of Potential
Source and Reservoir Rocks of the
Punjab Platform, Part of Indus
Basin Pakistan.”
His study was based on two wells
which were drilled by OGDCL. The
scholar worked out Cretaceous and
Jurassic Formations and tried to
delineate the environment of
deposition of these sediments.
It was considered that the
hydrocarbon source is far away
(Sulaiman Range) from the Punjab
Platform but the scholar's studies
have shown that the hydrocarbon
source is indigenous and not from
Sulaiman Range as was considered
earlier.
The scholar found age dating fauna
in Jurassic rocks in the Punjab
Platform which have never been
reported from Pakistan. This age
dating fauna will be very helpful in
establishing the biostratigraphy
especially in the Punjab Platform.
The general concept about the
depositional environment of ooids
and oolitic limestone is shallow
marine. His findings are against this
general conception as the studied
ooids from the wells are of deeper
marine. Dawsonite and Boehmite
have also reported for the first time
from the Punjab Platform. These
minerals have been considered as
of high temperature origin. In the
present study, the biogenic origin of
these minerals has been proved.

Mr. Fakhri Alam Khan (sitting with

of 68 papers at International IEEE

Challenges in Information Science
(RCIS) held at Nice, France from
May 19-21, 2010.
Fakhri is a PhD Scholar in Computer
Science, Department of Scientific
Computing, University of Vienna,
Austria. The title of his paper is
"Workflow Enactment Engine
I n d e p e n d e n t P r o v e n a n c e
R e c o r d i n g f o r e - S c i e n c e
Infrastructures".
“I would like to thank HEC for
providing me opportunity and
funding to pursue my career as a
researcher,” said Fakhri.

HEC, PIEAS Sponsor Teams
for Shell Eco Marathon
A ceremony to distribute cheques among teams of young engineers for
participation in Shell Eco Marathon was held under the auspices of
STEM Careers Programme (SCP), a joint venture of the Higher
Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Institute of Engineering
and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), at HEC Secretariat recently.
Prof. Dr. Sohail. Naqvi, Executive Director HEC, was chief guest on the
occasion. Dr. Abdullah Sadiq, Chairman STEM and Dr. Muhammad
Aslam, Rector, PIEAS were also present.
Three teams of young engineers from Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute
(GIKI), Swabi, University of Engineering and Technology (UET),
Lahore and College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, NUST
have been selected by SCP for sponsoring their participation in Shell
Eco Marathon to be held from July 8-10, 2010 at Kuala Lampur,
Malaysia.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Naqvi said that achievement of the
young engineers was actually the result of the investment made by
HEC in faculty development and strengthening universities'
technological infrastructure. He appreciated the project advisers of all
the three universities, for guiding the young engineers and
successfully completing the project despite financial constraints. He
also announced the plans to organize a pre Shell Eco Marathon at
national level from the next year.
Each year Shell organizes an energy-economy competition known as
the Shell Eco-marathon, which challenges top young engineers to push
the limits of fuel efficiency. The competition is an educational platform
that encourages students across Asia to design, build and test fuelefficient
vehicles. At last year's event in Berlin, a vehicle traveled 3836
kms on a single liter of fuel.
This year for the first time in the history of the event the Shell Eco-
Marathon will hold the event in an Asian country. The event will be held
at the Sepang international racetrack, a formula one track in Kuala
Lumpur. Of immense interest to every Pakistani is the fact that 27
student teams have registered for the event the highest number in the
competition. These teams come from top universities across Pakistan
and will pit their eco-vehicles against 120 teams from Asia.
This is only the second time that Pakistan has taken part in the
competition. Last year four teams of young engineers from GIKI and
National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) participated in
the competition, of which one was sponsored by SCP.
The teams selected to be sponsored by STEM Careers Programme are
Pak-Wheelers, College of EME, NUST (Sanctioned Amount: Rs. 500,
000), Team Aqua, GIKI (Sanctioned Amount: Rs. `300, 000), and The
Innovators, UET Lahore (Sanctioned Amount: Rs. 300, 000).

13 FPDP Concludes
29 University Teachers Certified as HEC Master Trainers

(HEC) has urged the faculty
members to get acquainted with
latest advances in their respective
disciplines.
He was speaking at the concluding

ceremony of the 13 Master
Trainers Faculty Professional
D e v e l o p m e n t P r o g r a m m e
organized by the Learning
Innovation Division, HEC at the
Commission Secretariat on
Tuesday.
Twenty-nine faculty members from
22 public and private universities
across Pakistan participated in this
Programme, which was held from
April 14 to June 8, 2010.
The Chairman said that in this age
of information explosion, a teacher
must be well prepared as today's
students have access to unlimited
knowledge through a variety of
resources on internet. “To be a
good teacher, you shall have to
keep pace with the rapidly
c h a n g i n g i n formation a n d
technology,” he said.
Dr. Laghari emphasized on the
importance of pre-service and
continuous in-service teachers
training. He appreciated the efforts
of Learning Innovation Division in
making up the major deficiency of
pre-service training by organizing
regular Faculty Development
Programmes to develop and
enhance the requisite pedagogical
and administrative skills of the
existing faculty.
The Master Trainers Faculty
P r o f e s s i o n a l D e v e l o p m e n t
Programme (MT FPDP) is an eight
to twelve week in-service
orientation programme designed to
equip the higher education
teaching faculty with the latest
pedagogical and research skills
required for effective teaching and
research. So far, 386 Master
Trainers have been trained in 13
successful batches of MT FPDP.

is ready to provide them all

The 13 Batch of MT FPDP course
comprised of core modules along
with some additional components.
In “Teaching as a Profession”
module they gained insight about
their profession. In “Microteaching”
module they got chance to
demonstrate and improve their
teaching skills. “Assessment and
Evaluation”, “Communication
Skills” and “Research Methods and
Skills” modules were also
conducted to enhance the teaching
capabilities of the participants.
Participants took keen interest in
“Competent Language Usage
Essentials” module which was
highly appreciated by the
participants. Other than core
modules special sessions were also
arranged in which eminent scholars
shared their views with the
participants of on different topics.
On the occasion, the Chairman HEC
took oath from the participants that
they should remain loyal to their
profession. Certificates were
distributed amongst the successful
Master Trainer Faculty Members at
the end of the ceremony.

Workshop on Audit and Financial Management Skills
As part of a series of workshops to be held throughout
Pakistan at higher education institutions for capacity
building of audit and finance departments, the Learning
Innovation Division organized a six-day workshop on
Audit and Financial Management Skills at HEC Regional
Centre, Lahore.
The main objective of this workshop, organized under
the programme “Modern University Governance for
University Administrators” was to provide an
opportunity to the participants to examine their own
skills in problem-solving and negotiations through
exercise related to audit and financial management.
Lt. Gen. (R) Muhammad Akram Khan, Vice Chancellor,
UET Lahore was the chief guest at the closing ceremony.
Appreciating activities of HEC, he highlighted the
importance of the subject and suggested that this
workshop should also be held at sub-campuses of the
universities.
Mr. Amir Imtaiz and Ms. Sumbal Iftikhar, representatives
of the participants, expressed deep gratitude to the HEC
for bringing people from different universities together
and making the workshop a success. They said that such
programmes provide a forum for fruitful discussion and
increase the opportunities of learning and sharing.
So far, 289 University Audit and Finance Department
representatives have been equipped and trained by
Modern University Governance Programme of the
Learning Innovation Division.
2-day ITE Module Review Workshop Concludes
A two-day workshop on ITE Module Review was organized by the
National Academy of Higher Education (NAHE), Learning Innovation
Division, Higher Education Commission at HEC Secretariat.
The workshop was third in the series of module development process
for the component Incorporating Technology in Education (ITE). The
participants represented seven public universities, including University
of Engineering and Technology, Taxila; University of Balochistan,
Quetta; Lahore College for Women
University, Lahore; University of
Agriculture, Faisalabad; Mirpur University
of Science and Technology, AJK; Fatima
Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi;
and University of Sindh, Jamshoro.
The workshop focused on the finalization
of the indigenous ITE modules through
which participants will be imparted
training for the betterment of classroom
instruction at higher education level in
the country. The programme has the
feature of imparting training at the
doorstep of the universities. It has been
planned that the same material will be
pilot tested to test the effectiveness of
the modules for the targeted group.
In the first phase of the project, NAHE
imparted International Computer Driving
License (ICDL) training to 246 faculty
members from across Pakistan.

Launch Joint Programme
The Higher Education Commission
(HEC) and the French Embassy in
Pakistan have launched a joint
programme for research mobility,
w h i c h a i m s t o h e l p t h e
development of cooperation
between French and Pakistani
scientific organizations, engaged in
R&D programmes of all the
scientific and technology fields.
The fellowship programme is
intended for highly-qualified
Pakistani doctoral and postdoctoral
scientists and offers them an
excellent opportunity to do
research in France for six to nine
months. HEC and the French
Embassy have invited applications
for Split PhD Scholarships and Post
Doctoral Fellowships. Scholarship

Dera Bugti Wins
HEC scholar Abdul
Ghaffar Bugti has not
only completed MBA in
Finance from COMSATS
Institute of Information
Technology (CIIT), but
also clinched the Gold
Medal by securing 90
per cent marks and a
CGPA of 3.82/4.
Zulfiqar Ali Shah
Completes PhD in Finance
Gold Medal Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah has completed his
Ghaffar, belonging to district Dera Bugti and a
graduate of BUITEMS Quetta, was selected
under the scheme “Provision of Higher
Education Opportunities for Students of
Balochistan and FATA,” which has been
specifically designed to provide financial
assistance to 1300 undergraduate and 700
postgraduate talented students of Balochistan
and FATA so that they may continue their
studies in reputed universities of the country.
PhD in Finance from Muhammad Ali
Jinnah University (MAJU). He was
supervised by Dr. Tariq Javed, Associate
Professor, Qauid-i-Azam University,
Islamabad.
The title of Dr. Zulfiqar's thesis is
“Corporate Governance and Financial
Performance, a Comparative Study of
Developing and Developed Markets”.
This study compares the impact of corporate governance on
various areas of performance between the USA (developed
economy) and Pakistan (developing economy). Dr. Zulfiqar also
availed the HEC scholarship under International Research
Support Initiative Programme (IRSIP) and carried out part of his
research at State University, New York, USA. During his
coursework, he published 13 research papers in HEC recognized
journals.
Acknowledging Zulfiqar's competence, his foreign supervisor
remarked, “His econometrics skills are if not superior are
comparable to any PhD student of USA business schools.”
“I am very thankful to HEC for awarding me this
scholarship without which it was impossible for
me to pursue MBA from CIIT, Islamabad. This
is an excellent opportunity for the students of
Balochistan,” said Ghaffar.
HEC has awarded 451 scholarships during the
intake of batch-I and II during 2008-10. The
scheme will now be advertised in July 2010.

“I am one of those lucky people who got the opportunity to go
abroad and complete their PhD research. I am thankful to HEC
who gave me the opportunity to avail IRSIP scholarship for PhD
research in USA. I taught the course of Corporate Finance during
my stay in State University of New York at Oswego and received
the best evaluation,” says Zulfiqar.
“I can not claim to be the first educated person of my family, but
definitely I am the first one who has completed PhD and this has
been possible due to HEC's support otherwise it would just have
been a dream for me.”

Understanding DSF and its Implementation in HEIs
The Quality Assurance Division, HEC organized a oneday
workshop at HEC Regional Centre Karachi to
introduce Degree Supplement Form (DSF) and its
implementation in all the degree awarding institutions
of Sindh. DSF will help in the recognition of Pakistani
degrees at international level and facilitate students in
getting admissions to the foreign Universities.
Representatives of HEC and Controllers of Examination
of all the public and private universities of the Sindh
province participated in the workshop, which focused
on capacity building and to apprise the universities
about benefits of the DSF that would be attached to the
degrees and would provide detailed information about
qualification of the student, institution and other
required information as per international criteria.
Speaking on the occasion, through video conferencing,
Dr. Riaz Hussain Qureshi, Adviser (HRD) HEC said that
HEC has been working hard not only to boost the higher
education in the country and to improve its quality but is
also striving to earn international recognition for our
degrees.
He further added that Pakistani students have been
facing great problems in getting admissions in the
foreign universities due to lack of international
recognition for our degrees and the DSF has been
introduced to resolve the problems being faced by the
students and to facilitate their admissions by providing
them required information to the employers and
universities.
The resource person for the workshop Dr. Tanveer
Ahmed Malik, Controller of Examination, University of
Agriculture, Faisalabad gave a detailed presentation
about the DSF. Ms. Zia Batool, Director General, Quality
Assurance, HEC also spoke on the occasion.
Workshop for Capacity
Building of HEC's IT Staff
A workshop on Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager
(SCCM) 2007 R2 for capacity building of HEC's IT staff was
organized recently. This tool provides various IT support services
and enables efficient service delivery to end users while performing
and managing all computer systems from SCCM Administration
Console. The services include Software Distribution, Asset
Intelligence, Operating System Deployment,
Hardware Inventory, Software Metering and
different types of Reports.
The workshop was hosted by Syed Atif
Ahmed, System Engineer (PERN2). The key
participants of the workshop were Mr. Anwar
Amjad, DG (IT), M. Pervaiz Khan, Director
(NIS), Ch. Abdul Fayyaz Chattha, Country
Coordinator/RM North (PERN2) and IT
Support Staff.
The main focus of the workshop was on
SCCM features and tools for infusing
innovative scenarios and new practices.

interest and active participation in the
workshop.

Framework for Fine Arts Courses

The National Curriculum Review Committee of the Higher Education
Commission in Fine Arts was held at HEC Regional Centre, Lahore to develop
the final framework of courses. The National Association of Schools of Art
and Design (NASAD), the accrediting body for Art and Design colleges in
USA, was used as a model for developing the Fine Arts Curriculum in
Pakistan, to ensure international as well as local standards are reflected.

should organize specialized teacher training programmes for Fine Art

HEC Committee Updates Forestry Curriculum
A three-day meeting of the
National Curriculum Revision
Committee in Forestry was
organized by the Higher Education
Commission, to finalize curriculum
of four-year BSc (Hons) in Forestry
keeping in view the template of
Agriculture disciplines, developed
by experts in October 2009.
The experts from all Agriculture
universities, R&D Organization
such as WWF and Director General
of Pakistani Forest Institute
attended the meeting. A detailed
discussion on current and
important issues of Forestry was
carried out so that the revised
curriculum reflects new ideas
regarding changing scenario of
forest resources in the country and
around the world.
The participants agreed that all
universities and institutions that
are imparting forestry education at
graduation level should have
common, comprehensive and
updated curriculum according to
demand of the Provincial Forest
D e p a r t m e n t s a n d a l l i e d
organizations. All courses were
reviewed and improved by
incorporating the latest issues in
the contents. Some new subjects
were also included in the scheme.
The Committee recommended that
latest books on the subject should
be made available, besides urging
the experts in the field of forestry to
write monograph and textbooks
under HEC funded scheme.
It was further recommended that
an Accreditation Council for
Forestry degree in Pakistan should
be established to ensure uniformity
and quality standards in all
departments and institutes offering
Forestry degree at graduate and
postgraduate levels. To ensure the
quality of education in forestry,
monitoring of the required facility
in class room, laboratory, and
equipment should be carried out on
regular basis by HEC. Physical
training and field visit should be an
integral part of forestry education.
Pakistan Forest Institute will adopt
the revised curriculum along with
other institutions, but to cater for
requirement of provincial/regional
g o v e r n m e n t s a n d o t h e r
organizations, it will continue with
the existing BSc and MSc Forestry
programmes of two years each for
maximum up to the next two years.

First-ever Civic Education
Resource Centre Established
HEC, USAID Provide
Scholarships to
86 Needy Students
A meeting of the Scholarship Management
Committee was held at Higher Education
Commission (HEC) Secretariat to approve the
cases of 86 needy students for academic year
2009-10, under USAID funded Merit and Needs
Based Scholarship Programme.
The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Sohail
Naqvi, Executive Director HEC and attended by
representatives of participating institutions,
eminent scholars and senior HEC officials.
The country's first ever Civic Education Resource Centre has
been established at the Department of Education, Bahauddin
Zakariya University (BZU), Multan. The University has
established the Centre in collaboration with the Higher Education
Commission (HEC).
The main objectives of the establishment of the Resource Centre
include dissemination and promotion of concepts of civic
education through effective campaigns, undertaking research on
civic education, organizing workshops/seminars to enable
individuals to play a meaningful participating role for community
welfare and collaboration with similar organizations to make
mutual efforts for promotion of civic/citizenship education in
Pakistan.
The establishment of the Centre will prove to be a milestone in
promoting effective and quality citizenship education, especially
in the higher education sector. This step would also help in
strengthening Social Sciences in Pakistan.
BZU's Department of Education is one of Social Sciences
departments selected by HEC under its project
“Development/Strengthening of Selected Departments of Social
Sciences and Humanities in General Universities of Pakistan”,
through which HEC is providing financial assistance to 13 Social
Sciences departments of various public sector universities for
construction of seminar rooms/classrooms, development of
departmental websites/database, purchase of equipment,
research grants, holding of conference/seminars and award of
PhD scholarships.
The importance of civic education has been highlighted in the
new education policy. In the present situation of the country
there is dire need to spread and promote civic education to make
citizens aware of their civic responsibilities so that they can play a
meaningful role for betterment of the society.
The selected students belong to the Institute of
Business Administration, Karachi, Quaid-i-Azam
University, Islamabad, NWFP Agriculture
University, Peshawar and Balochistan
University of Information Technology,
Engineering and Management Sciences.
The students will complete their education by
December 2011 on scholarships that cover
tuition fee, transportation, books, lodging and
incidental costs.
HEC in collaboration with the US Government
initiated the Merit and Needs based Scholarship
Programme to provide assistance to those
talented but needy students who are unable to
continue their education due to financial
disadvantages. These scholarships are
available since 2004 in the field of Business
Administration and Agriculture at 11
participating universities.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Naqvi stressed
the need for fund raising activities for
sustainability of the financial aid activities. He
added that the involvement of local community
is essential in order to raise funds for generating
scholarships for needy students.
Since the Programme's inception in 2004, 1328
needy students have received scholarships in
the field of Business Administration and
Agriculture discipline, while 827 students have
completed their education. A total of 1407
scholarships will be provided under this
programme.

HEC Committee Revises Curriculum of Agriculture Economics
A meeting of the National Curriculum Revision
Committee (NCRC) in the field of Agriculture
Economics was held at HEC Regional Centre,
Karachi. The meeting was attended by various
universities, degree awarding institutions and
R&D organizations.
Prof. Dr. Altaf Ali G. Shaikh, Member (Academics)
HEC was the chief guest in the inaugural
ceremony. Highlighting the obligation of HEC for
curriculum revision for undergraduate and
graduate levels, he briefed the participants about
the procedure for review and development of
curricula. A preliminary draft of curricula in
Agriculture Economics was developed in
Committee's previous meeting held in January
this year. The draft was modified in the light of
feedback received from committee members.
The Committee recommended that a teaching
schedule including course objectives,
prerequisites, topics to be covered, list of books,
articles and assignments shall be provided in the
beginning of the semester. It was strongly
recommended that the work load of the university
teachers may be rationalized as per international
standard.
The Committee while revising curricula for the course of
“Agricultural Problems of Pakistan” observed that there is no
relevant book available in the market. It was decided that a
manual will be prepared jointly by all the members of
NCRC.Computer software such as Eviews, SPSS, SAS, STATA,
etc. will be provided to the departments/faculty so as to train
the graduate students.
Keeping in view the emerging challenges in agriculture, the
Committee recommended that new courses on WTO and
Political Economy of Agriculture Sector should be developed.
Institutions like State Bank of Pakistan and Education Ministry
will be requested to consider the graduates of Agricultural
Economics at par with that of Economics for recruitment.
Nomenclature of the degrees of BSc(Hons) and MSc(Hons)
may be changed to BS and MS as per international standards.

ESP Workshop at GCU Faisalabad
The English Language Teaching Reforms (ELTR) Project kicked off
its second phase by organizing a week-long short course on English
for Specific Purposes (ESP) at Government College University
(GCU), Faisalabad recently. The faculty members of English
departments from public sector universities and colleges of
Faisalabad and nearby areas attended the course.
The teachers were given an insight into latest practices in ESP with a
special focus on ESP Student Needs, Linguistic Audit in ESP, ESP for
Baccalaureate Programmes, Issues in ESP Course Design, Using
Corpora in ESP Material Adaptation, ESP Games: Bingo Legal
Vocabulary etc.
Dr. C. J. Dubash from FC College University was chief guest at the
closing ceremony. He congratulated the participants for completing
the training in ESP and hoped that they would make best use of their
learning in the field.
Mr. Musa Hassan, HEC Coordinator, briefed the participants about
the efforts of ELTR Project, especially in the area of teachers
training with a special focus on English language learning and
research. He introduced the participants with what opportunities
the Project is offering to them.
Singles and Doubles Title for Afsheen
Ms. Afsheen Akhter, Project Manager (HRD) HEC
has won singles as well as doubles titles in the table
tennis tournament held from May 14-17, 2010 at
Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad. Sixty-four
players participated in the single competition while
there were 32 players in the doubles competition,
which were played on knock-out basis. Ms. Akhter
is ranked number 14 at national level. Mir Ijaz
Hussain Jahkarani, Federal Minister for Sports was
the chief guest in the closing ceremony, who
awarded trophies and cash prizes.

Anthropology/
Sociology Teachers
A three-day workshop on dissertation
w r i t i n g i n t h e s u b j e c t o f
Anthropology/Sociology was organized by
Higher Education Commission (HEC) in
collaboration with The American Institute of
Pakistan Studies (AIPS) at Islamabad
recently.
Second in the series, the dissertation
workshop was for doctoral students in
Anthropology and Sociology, and was
conducted by eminent anthropologist Dr.
Kamran Ali, University of Texas/Austin and
Dr. Humaira Iqtidar, Research Fellow, Centre
of South Asian Studies, University of
Cambridge, UK. The first workshop was held
in May 2009 in the subject of History.
The workshop addressed issues of gender,
class and religious/ethnic difference within
an anthropological/sociological framework.
The participants were encouraged to engage
with social-historical and critical
understandings of various themes which can
range from an exploration of ethnic
relations, religious movements, labour,
women in urban life and the social
implications of reconfiguration of urban
spaces (e.g., urban planning, flyovers, new
constructions) as well as critical film and
media studies.
The workshop was attended by a group of 12
in-service university/college teachers
pursuing MPhil/PhD degrees at various
universities located across Pakistan.
HEC and AIPS aims to facilitate scholarship
within academe in Pakistan in various
disciplines The workshops are intended to
bring together doctoral students in Pakistan
who are developing dissertation proposals
a n d a r e i n e a r l y p h a s e s o f
research/dissertation writing, and who seek
to develop richer, more subtle or robust

First Anniversary of LCWU Radio

The Department of Mass Communication, Lahore College for
Women University (LCWU) recently celebrated first anniversary
of its campus radio FM 96.6, Voice of LCWU. Mr. Mujataba Shujaur-Rehman,
Provincial Education Minister was the chief guest
while Prof. Dr. Bushra Mateen, Vice Chancellor LCWU, presided
over the ceremony.
FM 96.6 was established in 2009 and its first transmission was
aired on March 23, 2009. It broadcasts live transmission from 11
am to 1 pm daily, including radio feature, drama, documentary,
interviews, news and survey reports etc, which are prepared by
students of Mass Communication.
In his address, the Minister congratulated the Vice Chancellor,
Chairperson of the Department and FM team for completing one
year of successful transmission. He also congratulated them for
being the first female University of Pakistan to have its

Germany to Extend Help
for Upgrading TIAC
Germany would extend
financial assistance for upgradation
of Taxila Institute
of Asian Civilizations (TIAC),
which is acting as a catalyst
to understand the common
and diverse features of the
people of Asia, primarily in

The financial assistance would be provided under Pakistan-
German Educational Development Project recently signed
between Dr. Michael Koch, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of
Germany and Dr. Hugh van Skyhawk, Professor of Comparative
Religion at TIAC and Principal Adviser to the German Technical
Cooperation (GTZ/CIM) for upgrading of the Taxila Institute. TIAC
is a constituent Institute of the Quaid-i-Azam University.
While addressing the signing ceremony, the Ambassador hoped
that this initial financial assistance for developing the Institute
would help empower Pakistani students of Social Sciences and
Humanities.

QAU Scientist's Research on
Growing Evidence of Tetraquarks

from the Physics community as its results may
lead to discover a new brand form of matter.
Jamil Aslam is a faculty member of Physics
Department at Quaid-i-Azam Universty
(QAU), Islamabad while the other two
physicists are working in Deutsches
Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY), the biggest
German research centre for particle physics.
Jamil and his team members analyzed the
data collected by the KEK particle collider in
Japan during an experiment known as Belle
and claimed the discovery of tetraquark
particles that consist of four quarks instead of
the usual two (quark-antiquark) and three
quark ones.
“Though it is not conclusive, however the
analysis made in paper supports the evidence
of tetraquarks and if it is proved in Belle
experiments, scheduled for later this year, it
will give a brand new form of matter” says Mr.
Jamil.

The 6 convocation ceremony of the Bahria University,
Islamabad was held recently at Jinnah Convention
Centre Islamabad. Admiral Noman Bashir, Chief of the
Naval Staff was the Chief Guest, who conferred degrees
to the 700 graduating students in various discipline
including BBA, BSE, BCE, BS, MS, MSC and MBA.
Fourteen gold medals and 12 silver medals were
awarded to the outstanding students as recognition of
their remarkable achievement in their respective
academic programmes. Tabinda Tariq, Tayyaba Mateen,
Saira Siddiqui, Sofia Khushnud and M. Tayyab Asghar
secured 4-CGPA in their respective disciplines.
While congratulating the graduates, Admiral Noman
Bashir appreciated them for continuous hard work of
the last many years to earn their degrees. He said that
he is confident that the quality education and grooming
they received at Bahria University would always help
them to withstand professional challenges.
He said that University faculty needs to be conscious of
the fact that they are preparing the youth who are
required to steer this nation out of the present crisis
which is multi-faceted and complex. He admired the
University's role for taking up research projects of
national and international significance, and its
collaboration with foreign universities. He also
appreciated the steps being taken by the University to
double the needs-based scholarships to accommodate
students coming from lower income group.
Vice Admiral (R) Muhammad Haroon, Rector, Bahria
University in his speech gave a brief account of the
various measures that the University has taken for its
expansion. He mentioned that all computer laboratories
have been upgraded with new equipment and servers. A
newly constructed block consisting of 10 classrooms and
spacious laboratories has been added to Islamabad
Campus at a cost of about Rs. 100 million which helped
the University to increase enrolment from 3300 to 4300
to meet the growing demand of admissions.
The Rector said that MPhil and PhD programmes have
been introduced both at Islamabad and Karachi
Campuses, a gymnasium is under construction at the
Islamabad campus at a cost of Rs. 70 million which shall
provide ample indoor sports facilities to students. “The
future plans of growth include introduction of new
academic discipline in Law and Dentistry from Fall 2010,
construction of Institute of Earth and Environmental
Sciences and construction of Medical and Dental College
building at Karachi,” he said.
He informed the audience that university researchers
are involved in two important projects of national
significance, one is related to Monitoring of the Tectonic
Movements of the Nanga Parbat, Haramosh and Indus
River area and other pertains to Thar Coal and its
chemical composition.

Conference
on Ecology
The second National Science
Conference/Workshop on Ecology
was organized by the Laboratory of
Dendrochronology and Plant
Ecology of Pakistan, Department of
Botany, Federal Urdu University of
Arts, Science and Technology,
Karachi. The conference, funded by
the Higher Education Commission,
provided a platform to the
ecologists and research students to
discuss various ongoing problems,
exchange scientific ideas, share
experiences, knowledge and
increase research activities.
Field sampling and ecological trip of
mangrove forest was arranged by
Port Qasim Authority while farewell
dinner was sponsored by GeoLink
(Pvt) Ltd., Australia, Pakistan.
Dr. Moinuddin Ahmed, Foreign
Professor, was the chief organizer.
The workshop participants were
given chance to collect natural data
from the field. This data was
gathered in the laboratory and
analyzed phytosociologically. The
data was then subjected to
multivariate analysis i-e ordination
and cluster analysis.

Movement - Past, Present and
Future” was organized by the
Centre for South Asian Studies,
University of the Punjab, Lahore in
collaboration with Sir Ganga Ram
Heritage Foundation (SGRHF). The

Rector NUST Attends
ACU Conference and
UNESCO-COL Workshop
Lt. Gen. Muhammad Asghar, Rector, National University of
Sciences and Technology (NUST) attended the ACU
Conference of Executive Heads in Cape Town, South Africa
recently. About 200 Vice Chancellors, Rectors and senior
officials of the universities from across the Commonwealth
attended the Conference.
The Conference was entitled “Universities and the
Millennium Development Goals” and the main themes
included sustainability, health and education. Twenty-two
papers on various aspects of the themes were presented
by the eminent scholars.
NUST also presented a paper entitled “NUST Initiatives for
clean water in Pakistan”. The paper discussed different
water treatment projects undertaken by NUST Institute of
Environmental Science and Engineering. The main focus of
the paper was the treatment of drinking water and
reclaiming sewage and contaminated water.
The Rector NUST also participated in a workshop on
Open Educational Resources (OERs) jointly organized
by UNESCO and Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in
Cape Town. A total of 30 Vice Chancellors and Rectors
were invited to attend the workshop. The workshop
aimed at expanding understanding of OERs among
educational decision makers in order to promote their
wider use. The participants shared their thoughts and
experiences about the provisions and usage of OERs.
Model United Nations
Conference
The NUST Business School (NBS) hosted the
NUST Model United Nation Conference (NUMUN
2010), which was organized by the BBA Spring
batch 2009 as a final project of Business
Communication.
The event consisted of two simultaneous UN
sessions, the Security Council and Counter
Terrorism Committee. Different schools of NUST
including NBS, SEECS, SCME and SCEE
represented different countries.
The discussion was highly informative, directed at
enhancing the public speaking and leadership
skills of the participants. During the sessions
tentative resolutions were presented by the
country delegates, which were passed in the end,
following routine UN procedure.
Dr. Ashfaque Hasan Khan, DG and Dean, NUST
Business School awarded certificates and shields
to the participants. Four best delegates were
given awards in the end. The event was
sponsored by Barclays and Mr. Books, Islamabad.
NUST Summit on
Innovation and Trend Setting
“Employers are looking for students with new and creative
ideas and innovation is the key to growth and success of many
companies.” This was stated by many business leaders while
speaking to students of NUST Business School at the
Innovation Leaders' Summit Day held at National University of
Sciences and Technology's newly constructed education city.
The theme of this first-ever summit was innovation and trendsetting,
with the aim of preparing NUST business graduates
for challenging business world. The summit was attended by
heads and senior executives of different national and
international organizations.
The day-long summit included mentoring sessions given by
corporate executives who shared with students their
experiences on successfully starting careers and overcoming
challenges in life and at work.
The summit provided students with an opportunity to learn
about innovative corporate practices and to develop
professional networking with industry executives. Dr.

Dr. Naqvi said that he was

First Engineering Open House at IIUI
The Faculty of Engineering and
Technology, International Islamic
University, Islamabad (IIUI)
organized its first Open House as
part of the University's Silver
Jubilee celebrations. Mrs. Yasmeen
Rehman, Adviser to the Prime
Minister was the chief guest while
Dr. Sohail Naqvi, Executive Director
HEC and Ms. Nafeesa Shah,
Chairperson, National Commission
for Human Development were the
guests of honour.
Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik,

Siddiqui, President IIUI and Mrs.

House and their demonstration and
overall arrangement of the event
show the dedication and hard work
of the university students,” she

must come forward and help us by
introducing new ideas, products
and devices which can produce
more energy, reduce transmission
losses, improve grid stations and
enhance house to house electricity
supply. The technological progress
we see today is the result of
untiring hard work of scientists and
engineers who have been working
day and night to bring more and

human beings,” shed added.
Ms. Nafeesa Shah said that seeing
such a huge number of engineering
students at this University, coming

SZABIST Launches Institutional Research Office
Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and
Technology recently launched the Institutional
Research Office (IRO) at its Karachi campus. Speaking
at this occasion, Dr. Izhar-ul-Haq, President, SZABIST
said that IRO qualitatively and quantitatively assess the
effectiveness of any educational institution and makes
appropriate recommendations.
He said that the tremendous explosive energy of the
youth mingled with their ambition to stand out from the
rest and change history is overwhelming for teachers
and parents, and the basic responsibility lies with the
educational institutions to ensure that students are fully
equipped with adequate tools and qualified faculty and
staff.
“It provides a handle to the authorities to realize
whether their institution is truly providing the right
environment for the youth that will keep them engaged,
challenged motivated and creative who could discover
themselves,” he said.
Dr. Izhar said, “We are proud to say that SZABIST is the
first educational institution in Pakistan, which has
implemented the IRO. We are continuously listening to
the needs of our youth, our faculty so as to provide them

Dr. Iqrar Laments Cut in HEC Budget
“The University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF) has
been striving to develop bridges between academia and
civil society by conducting research and development
activities in order to facilitate the farming community
with innovative technological outcomes initiated by its
scientists.” This was stated by Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad
Khan, Vice Chancellor, UAF while addressing the
inaugural session of workshop on “Food industry need
based projects for research in academia” recently
organized by National Institute of Food Science and
Technology and Endowment Fund Secretariat.
Dr. Khan said that our mission is to develop viable and
useful linkage with industrial sector for the promotion of
science and technology. He expressed his concern over
heavy budget cut of the Higher Education Commission
(HEC) and termed it hurdle in human resource
development activities taken place at the universities.
The Vice Chancellor maintained that UAF had received
Rs. 700 million grants from HEC while its original
expenditure was Rs. 1200 million. Referring current
financial year grant for the University he added that HEC
has promised to give us Rs. 722 million which is
insufficient amount even to meet the prevailing
expenses of employee's salaries.
Dr. Faqir Muhammad Anjum, Director General, NIFSAT
stressed the need for coordination between academic
institutions and industries and termed it vital for the
growth and development. He said that in developed
countries the private sector provides substantial
backward linkages in terms of supply of inputs, services,
credit, knowledge and forward linkages in processing,
value addition and marketing.

at the second convocation of the Federal Urdu University
of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST), Dr. Ashfaq
highlighted the importance of exploring new ways of
education to ensure progress and prosperity of the
country.
He said that there is a dire need to give equal importance
to the research in the fields of sciences, social sciences
and technology to find out a solution to the confronting
issues. He said that education was the main source for
maintaining national integrity and for building a strong
Pakistan, adding that the Government was focusing on
the research-based education in the universities.
Earlier, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Qasir, Vice Chancellor,
FUUAST enumerated various achievements of the
University. He said the University, so far, has issued as
many as 6127 degrees in various disciplines including 50
PhD and MPhil.
He said that there are five faculties and 13 department,
and 13000 students are enrolled at both campuses
(Karachi and Islamabad) of the University. "Over 10000
students are studying at Karachi campus and 2330 at
Islamabad campus whereas about 2241 students were
linked with the University as private candidates,” he said.

Social Tagging and Library
Practices Workshop at UMT
The Learning Resource Centre, University of Management and
Technology recently organized a one-day workshop on “Social Tagging
and Library Practices for Knowledge Organization”.
As many as 55 participants attended the workshop form various
educational institutions across the province. The workshop was jointly
conducted by Dr. Abdus Sattar Chaudhry, Associate Professor, Kuwait
University and Dr. Sajjad-ur-Rehman, Professor, Kuwait University.
A clear understanding of the concept, process, and tools related to
social tagging is expected to help libraries take full advantage of this
new initiative. The course was designed for Librarians and other
information and knowledge professionals interested in taking
advantage of social media tools for organizing and sharing knowledge.
In his welcome note Dr. Hasan Sohaib Murad, Rector, University of
Management and Technology said that web technologies have enabled
the learners and made it easier for end user to access resources and
develop technology-mediated social relations leading to the
development of knowledge communities.
Muhammad Anwar, Chief Library Officer, University of Management
and Technology, shared the programme details and shed light on the
importance of continuing professional development for the
enhancement of working competencies.
Irish Team Holds
Workshops at UHS
Two international workshops spread over
eight days from were conducted at the
University of Health Sciences, Lahore by
a team of facilitators and trainers from
Ireland headed by Mr. Macartan Hughes,
Director, National Ambulance Services
Ireland.
The two different workshops were
attended by 20 participants as master
trainers from all over Pakistan in EFR
(Emergency First Responder) and by
another 22 participants from Rescue
1122 on CFR (Cardiac First Responder).
The main objective of these workshops is
to train participants from all over the
country in the field of pre-hospital
emergency and in hospital emergency
care. The workshops helped team
building among doctors, nurses,
paramedics, rescue workers by welding
them work together to save life in golden
minute and golden hour of any
emergency. These also helped
emergency preparedness for faculties
and organizations.
The workshops were inaugurated by

Book by Dr. Muddassar Farooq
The peer-reviewed research book
of Dr. Muddassar Farooq entitled
" B e e - i n s p i r e d P r o t o c o l
Engineering: from Nature to
Networks" has been published by
Springer-Verlag in Natural
Computing series.
Dr. Farooq is the Director of Next
Generation Intelligent Networks
Research Centre at FAST National
University, Islamabad.
Dr. Farooq has successfully
conducted a unique research for
telecommunication networks,
based on techniques observed in
the honey bee colonies. The book
introduces a multipath routing
algorithm for packet-switched
telecommunication networks.
His research observes that the
honey bee networks demonstrate
robust adaptive efficient agentbased
communications and task
allocations without centralized
controls, which are desirable
features in the network design.
BeeHive algorithm, developed by
Dr. Farooq, is dynamic, simple,
efficient, flexible and represents an
important step towards intelligent
networks that optimally manage
resources.
The balanced exposition of the
book makes it equally suitable for
telecommunication network
designers and theorists, and
computer science researchers
engaged with artificial intelligence,
agents, and nature-inspired
techniques.
Dr. Farooq, a graduate of the
National University of Sciences and
Technology in Avionics, did his PhD
in Informatics from University of
Dortmund, Germany and Masters
in Computer Science and
Engineering from the University of
New South Wales, Australia. He is
also a member of IEEE, the world's
largest professional association for
the advancement of technology,
one of the few senior member of
the ACM (Association for
Computing Machinery) from
Pakistan, and a member of Pakistan
Engineering Council.
In his book, he has guided the
readers in a survey of natureinspired
routing protocols and
c o m m u n i c a t i o n t e c h n i q u e s
observed in insect colonies. He
offers the design of a scalable
framework for nature-inspired
routing algorithms and examines a
practical application using real
networks of Linux routers. He also
utilizes formal techniques to
analytically model the performance
of nature-inspired routing
algorithms.
In the last chapters of the book, the
writer introduces an immuneinspired
security framework for
nature-inspired algorithms, and
uses the wisdom of the hive for
routing in ad hoc and sensor
networks. He has also provided a
comprehensive bibliography to
serve as a reference for natureinspired
solutions to networking
problems.
The book has bridged the gap
between natural computing and
computer networking. What sets
this book apart from other texts on
this subject is its natural
engineering approach in which the
challenges and objectives of a realworld
system are identified before
its solution, nature-inspired or
otherwise, is discussed.
The competence of Dr. Farooq has
been acknowledged at home and
abroad. He is the winner of Silver
Medal of the Hummies Competition
at GECCO 2009, Montreal, Canada;
winner of both Gold and Silver
Medals for R&D at PASHA Awards,
2009 Pakistan and a number of
other awards.
In addition to a large number of

presentations, Dr. Farooq has been

aimed to design a generic remote
health care system with a focus on

IMS Security Project for developing
an intelligent Bio-inspired selfdefending
security framework for
IMS and Next Generation All-IP
Networks, and Smart Phone
Security Project, which looks into
conventional techniques of
computational intelligence,
Artificial Intelligence and Artificial
Immune System to build an
optimized and light weight security
system that can be deployed in
Linux Kernel.
The proposed secure kernel will
provide adequate security against
Malware threats and denial of

Training on Women Empowerment
through Employment
A fourteen-day training workshop on “Women Empowerment
through Employment” was held at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid
Agriculture University, Rawalpindi (AAUR). The workshop was
jointly organized by the Department of Agri. Economics in
collaboration with the Human Resource Development
(HRDN), Islamabad. The objective was to provide an
opportunity to women to gain innovative entrepreneurial
skills, financial capacity, sharing of knowledge, skills training,
and enterprise development.
Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Khan, Vice Chancellor, AAUR said
there is a need to recognize and emphasize the diverse roles
of women. “Women should be organized and strengthened at
the grass root level to end their subordination,” he said. Ms.
Umara Asim, Programme Adviser, HRDN, in her address
informed the gathering about the aims and objectives of the
HRDN and said that it's the first organization in Pakistan,
which has developed quality standards for training. “These
standards are followed by different training institutions for
improvement in their programmes,” she added.
AAUR Seminar on Human Rights
A seminar on “Situation of Human Rights in Pakistan and Role
of Academia” was organized by the Department of Sociology
of the Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi
(AAUR) in collaboration with the Human Rights and Minorities
Affairs Department of the Punjab Government and
International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) recently.
Addressing as chief guest on the occasion, Dr. Khalid
Mahmood Khan, Vice Chancellor, AAUR said the principle of
universality of human rights is the cornerstone of the law of
international human rights and all states have ratified at least
one, and 80 percent of the states have ratified four or more, of
the core human rights treaties.
Ms. Parveen Qadir Agha, Vice President, IIUI said the
academicians have to play their due role in the society to
ensure protection of human rights. She said education covers
political, economic, social, ethical, moral and cultural issues
and is vital in changing the attitude of people towards dealing
with conflicts. Mr. Arshad Bin Ahmad, Secretary, Human
Rights and Minority Affairs, said the Government is trying hard
to provide basic human rights to each and every citizen.
Quality Seminar on
Sports Management
The Quality Enhancement Cell, Pir Mehr Ali Shah
Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi organized a
one-day seminar on “Sports Management and
Sports for Development” recently. A large number
of students and faculty members attended the
seminar that highlighted the importance of Sports
Management in promoting the sports culture in the
country.
Mr. Aamir Bilal, CEO and founder of Sports
Development Foundation, who is a qualified IOC
Coach and ex-Media Adviser of Pakistan Cricket
Board (PCB), gave a detailed presentation on
different aspects of sport management and sports
for development.
He said that Sports Management is a combination
of skills relating to organizing, planning, directing,
controlling, financing, evaluating, analyzing and
leading within the context of an organization or
department whose primary services are related to
sport and physical activities. “The root cause of our
present day poor performance in competitive
sports at international level is the management
inadequacies and lack of qualified human resource
to manage the affairs of sport bodies in the
country,” he said.
UHS, British University to
Launch Programmes in
Medical Education
The University of Health Sciences (UHS), in
collaboration with the University of Liverpool UK,
has established the Centre of Innovation in
Learning and Teaching (CILT), which is all set to
launch joint certificate and master's degree
programme leading to PhD in medical education.
Ian Willis, Liverpool University's Director Centre of
Life Long Learning and Hazel Howden-Leach,
International Academic Course Developer held a
seminar on “Best Practices in Medical Education”
at UHS. More than 100 faculty members of
affiliated medical colleges attended the seminar.
The objective was to identify problems and issues
in undergraduate and postgraduate medical
education in Pakistan and to find solution of these
problems.
