THESTLUKE’SWAY Autumn Edition 2010 Music Concerts Academic Colours 2009 Academic Achievements Awarded The Academic Assembly held on 16 February 2010 celebrated the achievements of our Middle and Senior School students with the awarding of Colours obtained through the academic results of Semester 2, 2009. Year 12, 2009 received their Colours Awards at the 2009 Speech Night. As is the tradition at St Luke’s, a past student was invited to address the audience; and this year Ayrial Mammino, Senior and School Captain of 2007, presented the Colours Awards. Ayrial spoke of her experiences at St Luke’s and at University where she is studying Veterinary Science. She spoke of the importance of trying as many things as possible and the need to give all that you do your very best, even if it is something that you find difficult, it places you well out of your comfort zone or even something you fear. True success can only come from giving the things that you do your very best, regardless of the expected outcome. Ayrial’s many experiences about which she spoke certainly resonated with the Middle and Senior School audience as they all listened intently to one of their peers. Each of these experiences always centred on how important it is to embrace each opportunity with an open mind and a readiness to learn. It is only through this approach will you reap the rewards and benefits that each experience can offer. Genesis: the coming into being of something; the origin, the initial stage of a developmental process. So it was for most of the Middle School students this year as they began the next stage of their educational journey with their first day in either Year 7 or 8. The day was spent getting to know many new people, learning what it is to be a St Luke’s student and understanding the ‘St Luke’s way’. Being dressed in their school sports uniform allowed Mr Johnstone to lead these students through a series of fun serendipity activities where new friendships would be formed and discoveries about each other could be made in an open way. Students also set their goals for the year, and they would revisit these at the end of the year on Exodus Day. The Genesis Day provides the staff an opportunity to settle these young people into Middle schooling quickly, and the students always enjoy the activities and they find a sense of achievement in the outcomes. Duke of Edinburgh Awards The opportunities for the young people to improve themselves in many ways are numerous at St Luke’s. Each year a growing number of our students is involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme. There are four levels of awards available ranging from the Bridge Award for those not yet old enough to start their Bronze Award through to the prestigious Gold Award only achieved by the very few. Students choose an activity from each of the areas of service, skills, recreation and expedition and complete them over a set period of time along with a diary to log their Duke of Edinburgh journey. In addition, those attempting the Gold Award also complete a residential project. At a recent School Assembly, Senator John Hogg presented the following students with their respective awards.
