THESTLUKE’SWAY Autumn Edition 2010 Shakespeare Comes to Life ‘But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and Juliet is the sun?’ Or is it the light from the Year 6 Shakespearian players as they performed so brightly? Those who attended either of the Year 6 theatre restaurant evenings will attest that it was the latter. The performances of Year 6 students as they take on the characters from both Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet were just outstanding. Both classes performed selected scenes from the plays with Mr Cathcart narrating to fill in the gaps for the audience. Mr Farthing headed up the backstage production, and when the talents of the staff and students came together the outcome was nothing short of fantastic. To add to the evening, the audience was treated to a twocourse meal served by the non-performing class. The two nights were a smashing success, and it is no wonder that the Year 5 students are already keen for their opportunity to perform for family and friends next year. Lions Youth of the Year Quest Stephanie Smith and Charlotte Kelly represented St Luke’s Anglican School at the Club Judging of the Lions Youth of the Year Quest at a recent Hinkler Lions meeting. Competing against four other students, the girls were required to speak for two minutes on each of two impromptu topics as well as make a speech of five minutes on individually chosen topics. All contestants performed very well. The overall results for the evening were based upon the speaking section, an interview and overall school and community involvement. Charlotte Kelly was announced the winner and she proceeded to zone judging on 6 March where she competed against six other Year 12 students from Bundaberg and District. Congratulations must go to both students who entered this contest, but in particular to Charlotte. 12

Old Saints Recognised St Luke’s may be a young school when compared to most, but already it has built up an enviable reputation in many areas, particularly in the performing arts. In February, five of the seven recipients of the Carl and Ruth Neilson Bursaries went to past students of St Luke’s. Nick Evan and Alex Morris, both Seniors 2005, clarinettists and have played with the Australian Youth Orchestra. They are completing studies at the Queensland Conservatorium. Luke Aaron, Senior 2007, continues to play the trombone even though he is undertaking studies in Engineering at University of Queensland. Luke played with Brisbane Brass in 2009 where he was nominated as an upcoming trombone star. The youngest Old Saint to receive a bursary was Amy Clements, Senior 2009. Amy has headed south as she has won a place at the prestigious Melbourne University Conservatorium to study Flute in 2010. Amy also received one of four scholarships to travel to Seattle in the USA in November 2009 to participate in the Pacific Ensemble Honours Program. Amy was selected as Principal Flautist for this international band. Ashley Carter, who left St Luke’s in 2004 at the end of his Year 10 studies, is also in his final year at the Queensland Conservatorium and was a recipient of a bursary. In total, these young people received $22 000 to help them towards achieving their dreams. We all wish them well. February 2010 The Wide Bay region was well represented at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s recent Undergraduate Scholarships Presentation Ceremony. Seven students from schools at Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Bundaberg were among the 55 scholarship recipients at the ceremony on Monday 15 February. The scholarships – which range in value from $3,500 to $12,000 – are designed to recognise, reward and encourage high academic achievement among first-year students at USC. Three students who graduated from high schools in Bundaberg all received $6,000 Vice-Chancellor’s Merit Scholarships with Old Saint Tara Thomas being a worthy recipient. Congratulations Tara! Amy Reaches for the Stars Not only was Amy successful in receiving a Neilson Bursary, she has just been selected as one of the 13 grant recipients from the Layne Beachley Aim for the Stars Foundation. The Foundation was set up by seven-times World Surfing Champion, Layne Beachley, to inspire and motivate young women across Australia to “Dare to dream, pursue their passion and aspire to achieve”. Encompassing academic, sport, cultural and community pursuits, Aim for the Stars offers ambitious and dedicated females an opportunity to receive moral and financial support to help them achieve their goals. Amy certainly meets these characteristics, and we congratulate her on receiving such recognition though this Foundation. THESTLUKE’SWAY Autumn Edition 2010 13
