Service Efforts Recognised
SUMMER EDITION 2007
One of the great aspects of St Luke’s is the way
in which many of our young people support an
ever-increasing number service activities, both
within and outside of the School community.
At a special assembly held towards the end
of Term 4 2007, Cr Kay McDuff, Mayor of
Bundaberg, presented students in years
7 to 12 with certificates to recognise their
selfless work in supporting others.
The large number of functions that occur in Term 4 reflects what
a vibrant and special school that is St Luke’s Anglican School.
From the Christmas party with performances at the Early
Learning Centre, to the glamour of the Year 12 Formal there is
much to celebrate and I congratulate Ryan Droney for being the
Dux of St Luke’s in 2007. I cannot say I enjoyed any function
more than another as they all had their unique flavour. What
did emanate from each was the pride in wanting to do things
well and the close relationship that students have with their
teachers and each other. This was highlighted at the Senior
and Middle School Speech Night and the Primary Celebration
Evening. The performance at each function, by the students,
was a real highlight. Who will forget the Lower Primary Concert
where all the students were on stage singing to their parents
and siblings? Or the song written by Lance Sisiolo and sung to
his peers at Year 12’s final liturgy. It has been a truly wonderful
term and I know that The St Luke’s Way manages to capture
the excitement, emotion and fun that we have experienced.
The façade of the western boundary is taking on a whole new
look as the Bundaberg Ring Road has started to be built. This
may take 18 months to complete as work will oscillate depending
on the busyness of the cane season. There is much speculation
on the impact this will have on the School and in particular the
Multipurpose Centre and Music Buildings.
From the Principal
As The St Luke’s Way focuses on many of the highlights at the
end of 2007, we are looking forward to 2008 where there will
be many new and fresh experiences for the students. For the
Year 12 of 2007, as they exit the school, we welcome them as
‘Old Saints’ and encourage them to remain in contact with us.
Email is a wonderful tool and an easy way for Old Saints to tell
us where they are and what they are doing.
Parish Pantry Gets a Christmas Boost
Each week many people throughout our community struggle to make
ends meet. Providing families with the basic food items, particularly
at Christmas time, is a role taken on by many charity groups. The
Bundaberg Parish of the Anglican Church is one such organisation,
and it provides food items through the Parish Pantry.
At the end of Term 4, the Primary School supported the Parish
through a food appeal, and our Primary families most generously
supported this as they do so many other service activities. Father
Richard Tutin, Rector of Christ Church, was presented with a carload
of food (literally) on the last day of school for 2007.
This food drive is now to be an annual event. The Oates family have
donated a trophy to be presented to the class that most strongly
supports the appeal. Year 2G was presented the award for 2007
having donated enough food to feed a family for weeks.

Volunteers’ Morning Tea
The School may have a staff
of 100; however, behind the
scenes there is a small army
of volunteers supporting them
in so many ways. The Primary
School’s reading program would
be so much more difficult to
run without the band of mums
and dads in classrooms each
morning. The Tuckshop staff
would find it difficult to cater
for the students at meal times,
and the Library may well be in a
little chaos if it were not for the
helpers that come in each day.
These are just a few examples
of how the School is supported
by these willing workers.
At the end of the year, the
School invited these
wonderful people in for
morning tea to simply say
‘thanks’. The support of our
volunteers enables the School
to achieve outstanding results
as staff energies are put to the
best use.
Once again, the School would
like to thank our volunteers for
all of their support throughout
2007, and we look forward
to their valuable contribution
throughout 2008.

Pre-preparatory Graduation
The ‘cute’ factor involved in any activity that
is run in the Early Learning Centre was never
more present than at the Pre-prep Graduation
and Christmas Concert. A very teary Mrs
Johnstone and Mrs Scutts farewelled the
2007 cohort of students at a great morning
function where these little people were
dressed in colourful academic dress, complete
with mortarboard. Each student received a
certificate of graduation in front of an adoring
crowd of family and friends.
The children put on a wonderful Christmas
concert to the delight of all. These children
then led the Christmas carols before the
arrival of a special guest. After some waiting,
Santa Claus arrived in his special sleigh – a
fire engine. There is no better way to arrive
as far as five year olds are concerned! Santa
handed out gifts to all the children in Kindy
and Pre-prep before he left to see other girls
and boys.
The morning was a wonderful success and
everyone enjoyed the festivities immensely.

Ladies’ Afternoon Tea
a Huge Success
Initiatives by the National Breast
Cancer Foundation have gained
notoriety over the year with
players in the NRL wearing pink
socks and pink numbers being
examples. St Luke’s Anglican
School seniors have assisted
this most worthy cause over the
past three years raising more
than $7500.
Support for the 2007 event
exceeded all expectations
and was the best supported
thus far with over 300 women
enjoying a delightful afternoon.
The afternoon consisted
of fashion, both male and
female; a tremendous number
of raffle prizes offered; and a
presentation by Mr Mark Wood
on behalf of Annie Franklin-
Wood. The afternoon was
inspirational in a number of
ways: the points placed forward
by Mark and the stories at the
tables all made for a special
afternoon. Thanks must go
to the sponsors of the event.
These were many and varied
and all part of the community.
Thanks must also go to Mrs
Suzette Nel and her band of
assistants. It takes a special
group of people to organise an
event like this, and St Luke’s is
blessed to have such a group.
One Door Closes as another Opens
Year 6 at St Luke’s is a special time
for this group of young people. The
final year of Primary School provides
opportunities to explore leadership,
develop self confidence, come closer to
God, improve study and work habits prior
to Middle School as well as strengthen
relationships and many other important
aspects of school life.
Golden Key for ‘Old Saint’
Daniel Marshall (Class of 2005) received an
invitation from The Griffith University Chapter
of the Golden Key International Society to
become a member. The Society provides
international recognition of outstanding
academic achievement, and Daniel certainly
fits the bill.
Daniel commenced his Bachelor of
Pharmaceutical Science at Griffith University
on the Gold Coast in 2006 and is expecting
to complete this course of study by the end
of 2008. He plans to commence his Master
of Pharmacy in 2009. Daniel has a current
GPA of 6.3, and to quote the Vice Chancellor
and President of the University in a letter to
To mark the end of these important Primary
years, The Year 6 Liturgy has become an
integral part of the ‘St Luke’s Way’, a right
of passage to Middle School and beyond.
This special service is well attended
by family and friends as the children
reminisce about all of those special times
in Primary School and to look forward to
the future with excitement.
Daniel, “Your high academic achievement
qualifies you for membership of the Society
and I congratulate you on this distinction.”
The Golden Key International Society
establishes a network among academically
talented students, connecting students from
diverse academic backgrounds and reinforces
students’ contacts with academic staff.
Membership to such a society should prove
both rewarding and beneficial to Daniel as he
continues his academic career.
St Luke’s congratulates Daniel Marshall, one
of its ‘Old Saints’, on this award and wish him
well with his future studies.
Encouraged and supported by their
parents and friends, these young people
have made a fine start to their schooling.
We wish them all the best as they start
the next phase of their education in the
Middle School.
Another Year Ends
We all comment on how fast each year goes by as our lives
seem to become busier. The Christmas break gives us the
time to slow down and reflect on the year that has been and
the one on which we are about to embark.
Each year the School’s final formal activity is the End of Year
Worship and is held on the last day of school. By this time all of
Senior School Students have departed, so this service gives
our Primary and Middle School students and staff a chance
to reflect on all the gifts from God we have received as we
prepare for the holidays ahead.
This End of Year Service is made a little
more special as it also provides the School
community a chance to gather together
before God as a group for a final time as
not all of us will return in the New Year.
Some students and staff will be moving
to new schools and new phases of
their lives, so this time of worship
gives us a chance to give thanks for
the time we have spent together.
Year 3 Gets Acquainted
with the Story of Noah
End-of-year concerts most often take a very
‘Christmasy’ approach. Not so for our Year 3 students.
A nativity play gave way for another well-known bible
story, that of Noah and the Ark. However, our quirky
Year 3 teachers did pick a more humorous approach
to this story that kept the audience entertained.
Year 3 obviously enjoyed preparing and performing
the story through this less than traditional approach.
Noah was kept guessing by God as the problems he
faced unfolded. Fortunately, the animals behaved
themselves, and all ended well for Noah and his
family, along with humanity and the animal kingdom.
