It must be typed – easier to fix errors. Be sure to use paragraphs – only one important point per paragraph. ARTWORK ANALYSIS WORKSHEET<br />

Write notes to answer the following questions<br />

1. DESCRIPTION – the basic general appearance of the artwork.<br />

What is the title of the artwork, who created it, when and in what medium?<br />

Give a general overall description of the artwork – realistic, abstract, mystical, stylised,<br />

disturbing, expressive, cheerful, etc.<br />

What can you see in the artwork? Make a list.<br />

2. ANALYSIS – the composition or layout of the artwork.<br />

How is the overall artwork laid out or organized, eg. middle, top, bottom, horizontal,<br />

vertical, diagonal, flowing, etc?<br />

How are the main objects arranged in the artwork, or where are they positioned –<br />

foreground, midground, background??<br />

What part of the artwork is the focal point – stands out most or most interesting? Why?<br />

Consider aspects like overall shapes, patterns, repetition, balance, etc. in the artwork.<br />

How would you explain the overall colour scheme – bright/dull, happy/sad, etc.?<br />

What aspect or feature of the artwork attracted to you to it?<br />

3. INTERPRETATION – the possible meaning or story behind the artwork.<br />

What do you think the artwork is about?<br />

What is happening in the artwork? What might it mean?<br />

What is the overall mood of the artwork and how does it make you feel?<br />

Are there any objects, symbols or colours that might have special meaning?<br />

What message might the artist be trying to say?<br />

How does the title relate to the artwork?<br />

4. JUDGEMENT – how good or bad the artwork is including your likes/dislikes.<br />

Why did you choose this artwork?<br />

What was your first impression of it? Has your opinion changed?<br />

List some aspects you really like about it and explain why. List some you dislike. Why?<br />

Does it show much skill or imagination?<br />

How well does it communicate a message?<br />

How good is this artwork overall? Why?<br />

* Don’t forget to include some research on your artist or the artwork as well – good for your marks!
