BDSSS Head of the River Rowing Regatta
The BDSSS Head of the River Rowing Regatta was held Sunday 15 May at Bucca Weir. This year saw
St Luke’s boat their biggest ever team (43 rowers) against traditional rivals Shalom and new rowing
heavyweights Bundaberg State High School. After a day of close, hard racing St Luke’s emerged
victorious in the Emma McCarthy Percentage Trophy and finished a close third in the Travelworld Overall
Champion Trophy.
The day was full of many great individual and team performances from our St Luke’s rowers. Rowing
Captain Sophie Jarvis claimed three victories in the Open Girls Single Scull, Double Scull and Quad Scull.
Fellow Rowing Captain Melanie Schmeider also had a victorious day claiming the Open Girls Double Scull
and Quad Scull titles. Melanie won the Year 10 Girls Single Scull and combined with twins Demi
Pressler-McHugh and Emma Pressler-McHugh, Sophie Jarvis and Sarah Dimes (cox) to claim the Open
Girls Quad Scull.
Demi Pressler-McHugh and Emma Pressler- McHugh went on to win the Year 10 and Year 11 Girls
Double Scull and combine with Melanie Schmeider, Sarah Dimes and Jacinta Bonney (cox) to claim the
Year 10 Girls Quad Scull.
In the boys’ races, Miles Edmondson-Clark and Rick Bennett showed their class to win the Year 9 and
Year 11 Boys Double Sculls and finish first and second respectively in the Year 9 Single Scull.
In a display of true St Luke’s spirit, Alexandrea Franks competed in seven races throughout the day. This
was an amazing display of school spirit and selflessness.
The St Luke’s Rowing Program would like to thank all the
coaches John Pressler, John Bigg, Ian Grotherr, Dave
Schmeider, Joe Jarvis and Ford Carson. These men have
volunteered many hours to prepare our athletes to a
standard that has made our school very competitive both
in local competition and state level competition. A big
thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to
make this season a success.
A sport like rowing can’t exist without the assistance of
parents and volunteers who give up so much of
their time to support their children.
Thank you to our Parent Support Group and Mrs Carolyn
Weston for organising our fundraising raffle and canteen
roster. Thank you ladies.
Thanks to Mr Peter Donaldson from Travelworld for his
continual sponsorship of the Head of the River.
