Justin D’Ath<br />

Meet Justin D’Ath, the author <strong>of</strong> over 40 books for children and young adults, including the hugely<br />

popular Extreme Adventures and Mission Fox series. 2013 has already been a big year for Justin,<br />

with the launch <strong>of</strong> the first two books in a brand new series Lost World Circus, and number 8 in the<br />

Mission Fox series.<br />

Fans <strong>of</strong> Justin’s Extreme Advertures can look forward to the forthcoming TV series, screening on<br />

Channel Ten later this year Sam Fox: Extreme Adventures. The children’s adventure series described<br />

as “Bear Grylls for boys”, is pitched at children under 12 and is based on a series <strong>of</strong> Justin’s adventure<br />

books. The series is currently being filmed in South Australia.<br />

Cristy Burne<br />

Meet Japan’s mythical creatures in this fast-paced and funny presentation by Cristy Burne, author <strong>of</strong><br />

the award-winning Takeshita Demons series <strong>of</strong> adventures. Headless demons, hair-snippers, things<br />

that go bump in the night…. Come prepared to laugh and learn. Cristy is also a science writer, editor<br />

and presenter who has lived for three years in Japan<br />

Ken Spillman<br />

Ken Spillman is the author <strong>of</strong> approximately 35 books, around half <strong>of</strong> them for children. His work<br />

includes the exceptionally successful Jake series for early readers, appearing in more than a dozen<br />

countries across Asia, Europe, Oceania & North America. His adventure series The Absolutely True<br />

Fantasies <strong>of</strong> Daydreamer Dev is also attracting many fans in India. Ken has presented sessions to<br />

many tens <strong>of</strong> thousands <strong>of</strong> schoolchildren in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Oman,<br />

Philippines and Singapore.<br />

Elaine Forrestal<br />

Elaine Forrestal is the author <strong>of</strong> many highly acclaimed and popular novels for children and young<br />

adults. She has also written for television. In 2000, Graffiti on the Fence was shortlisted for the<br />

same award.<br />

All <strong>of</strong> Elaine’s other titles have either won or been shortlisted for the WA Premier’s Award, the<br />

H<strong>of</strong>fman Award (WAYBRA) and the NASEN Award (UK). She has travelled widely and presented<br />

workshops in schools in Northern Ireland and France. Her presentations in schools, libraries,<br />

festivals and conferences everywhere are lively and interactive.<br />

Meg McKinley<br />

Meg McKinlay is a Fremantle children’s writer. Her picture book No Bears and chapter book Duck<br />

for a Day were both shortlisted for the Children’s <strong>Book</strong> Council <strong>Book</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Year Award and her<br />

novel Surface Tension won the 2012 Davitt Award for Crime Writing. She also won the Society <strong>of</strong><br />

Children’s <strong>Book</strong> Writers and IllustratorsCrystal Kite Award in 2013.<br />

Meg’s presentations are interactive and entertaining. Sessions cover aspects such as getting<br />

inspiration from the everyday, growing a story from an idea, the stories that inspire Meg’s work and<br />

her own writing journey (and for the littlest littlies, perhaps a stuffed animal or two). Meg’s most<br />

recent publications are Wreck the Halls and Definitely No Ducks.<br />

James Foley<br />

James Foley is a children’s author and illustrator. His latest book, In The Lion, was released by<br />

Walker <strong>Book</strong>s in 2012. It’s a little like I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, but darkly funny<br />

and set in a zoo. His debut picture book, The Last Viking, was written by Norman Jorgensen and<br />

published in 2011 by Fremantle Press. The Last Viking won the 2012 Society <strong>of</strong> Children’s <strong>Book</strong><br />

Writers and Illustrators’ Crystal Kite Award, a peer-voted book <strong>of</strong> the year award for the Australia/<br />

New Zealand region.<br />

This book also won the H<strong>of</strong>fman Award in the 2012 WA Young Readers’ <strong>Book</strong> Awards, given to the<br />

highest-ranked book by a WA creator, and a 2012 Children’s <strong>Book</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> Australia Junior Judges<br />

Award. The Last Viking has been shortlisted for a further four awards.<br />

<strong>Book</strong> <strong>Week</strong> theme ‘Read Across The Universe’, combining a love <strong>of</strong> reading with exciting physical<br />

competition. Space Jump features a selection <strong>of</strong> the 2013 CBC shortlisted books and engages<br />

students in the understanding that interacting with books and the products <strong>of</strong> our imagination <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

limitless possibilities for expanding our horizons.<br />

Come along to your local <strong>Stirling</strong> library and celebrate Children’s <strong>Book</strong> <strong>Week</strong> with stories, rhymes<br />

and songs. Bring your favorite teddy, wear your Onesie or PJs and enjoy some pizza too!<br />

This session is held outside <strong>of</strong> school hours and is open to the public. You may want to advertise this<br />

free event in your school newsletter so that your families have the chance to attend.<br />

Brought to you by Karrinyup Shopping Centre and Barking Gecko Theatre Company.<br />

Children from 2 - 5 years <strong>of</strong> age will embark on a new adventure as Rhoda Lopez from Barking Gecko<br />

reads from popular children’s books, inspiring young minds while fostering an early love <strong>of</strong> reading.<br />

This interactive 30 minute workshop includes a story reading, role-play (movement exercise), crafts<br />

and music.<br />

Each session is free and can accommodate up to 30 children. Parents need to remain with their<br />

children at all times and it is recommended that children bring their own cushion/pillow for their<br />

comfort while seated. Registration can only be made with Barking Gecko event staff in the Food Court<br />

on the day <strong>of</strong> the Story Time just prior to each session starting.<br />
