Accommodations<br />

This course requires significant student <strong>in</strong>teraction with peers <strong>and</strong> good communication skills. The<br />

teacher should take <strong>in</strong>to account strengths, needs, <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g expectations as per exceptional students’<br />

Individual Education Plans. Suggested modifications for <strong>in</strong>struction, assessment, <strong>and</strong> evaluation are:<br />

• simplify tasks;<br />

• use teacher-developed charts to record <strong>in</strong>formation;<br />

• extend learn<strong>in</strong>g time <strong>and</strong> completion of tasks;<br />

• use teacher-developed m<strong>in</strong>d map to present events <strong>and</strong> concepts;<br />

• modify workloads;<br />

• modify record<strong>in</strong>g, report<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> presentation of tasks to <strong>in</strong>clude visual aids;<br />

• use videos, computers, <strong>and</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>es for visual representation of course content.<br />

Students who require enrichment can be assigned <strong>in</strong>dependent activities to reflect their greater<br />

underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> application of events <strong>and</strong> concepts.<br />

OSS Considerations<br />

This college preparation course emphasizes concrete applications of the theoretical material covered <strong>in</strong><br />

the course <strong>and</strong> the development of critical-th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g skills. The curriculum<br />

expectations emphasize the development of both <strong>in</strong>dependent research skills <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

skills. OSS, Section 7.13, Anti-discrim<strong>in</strong>ation Education states: “When plann<strong>in</strong>g their programs, teachers<br />

will base their decisions on the needs of students, tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to consideration their students’ abilities,<br />

backgrounds, <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g styles.” With regard to Native education, this course “encourages all<br />

students to work to high st<strong>and</strong>ards, affirms the worth of all students <strong>and</strong> helps them strengthens their<br />

sense of identity <strong>and</strong> develop a positive self-image” (OSS, 1999, p. 58).<br />
