Acting Chorus Master
"I belieue that there are four choral scenes
in Faust that can rnake an irutnediate and
dramatic impression upon the audience, and
they all are quite dffirent
in ruusical content
and style: 1) the Kermesse scene --a true
opera chorus 'crowd scene'with rapld text and
busl textures 2) the louely waltz 'Ainsi que la brise legere' with
its elegance and lilt 3) Tbe Soldier's Chorus --a cltorus that the
audience responds to immediateb upon hearing with its 'hit-tune'
melod.1, and masculine strength 4) and the f.nal paga of 'Christ
est ressuscite!' -- I belieue, rny fauorite offstage chorus, with its
a bit of fun wlth tbe knowledge tbat my
piece that once contained afull length ballet in
Its fna/ act. As sucb, d.uring the dances in the
"The Fawt set designer, Robert Perdziola, has
prouidetl us with essentially a unit set to abich
carefully chosen elentents are added for each
scene. I arn seekingwith my ligbting to selectiuely
lllurninate certain aspects ofthe set to suggest
rather tbanfully present tbe d,etails of the scene.
This approach rnay help conuey the sense tbat we are in a sbadowy
