Our mission is simple. We are determined to reach a new generation of
theatre-goer. We want people to see theatre whom, for whatever
reason, don't already. With today's distractions like Facebook and
reality television, it's understandable that young people aren't flocking
to the theatre. We welcome these distractions as opportunity to
change our generation's perception of theatre and how it can impact
the way we choose to live our lives. We strive to create theatre as
insightful as it is relevant; theatre that creates genuine human
experiences that our audiences can connect with. We hope that in
doing so we will reach more young people, young people that have yet
to realize they enjoy theatre.
We measure our successes at the end of each play by raising the bar
with what we can accomplish with the next; by doing so, we hope to
help secure theatre as a medium for expression for the next generation.
From the plays we choose and the artists we employ to the beers we
drink, each decision we make is unified behind reaching that new
generation of theatre-goer.
A Californian nowhere, in a time long past that feel like today
There will be one 15 minute intermission
Nate from the Director
In grade school 1- and I'm sure many of you- used macaroni and watercolors
to paint some version of our American Dream. It probably involved pizza,
naps and video consoles (In perfect recollection of Mrs. Hoenig's 2nd Grade
Class my 3 "American Dreams" were "Money, Car, The World". And the
Seussian caricature of me in that macaroni mess was in magician's attire.)
Even then the thought is laid at our feet that we are to claw like a frenzied cat
until we can get what we desire most: MONEY. The American Dream is a
relentless pursuit of golden goals. Job, home, provisions, vacations,
retirement. On our land, prosperity and possibility are limited by the invisible
and limitless currency of hope- so long as you don't stop churning it out.
Success is nearly synonymous
with sacrifice, but is the acquisition of wealth
so important that it's the pulsing motivation of everything we do? How much
are we riding on this gamble that our dream will manifest instead of souring
into a waking nightmare?
This play is a classic cautionary tale on the American Dream- about how
hungry it can make us for success and how ravenous we can become when
starved for a better life. Shepard's words are too alive today in an America
famished for a better deal after being marooned by a sputtering economy and
dropped into the sloshing quicksand of the housing crisis. The show is an
absurdist drama with clumsy, impulsive people trying to claw their way out
of a hopeless rut, and I have met very real versions of each of these
characters over the years. I admired their tenacity but pitied their terrible
mistakes, all for the sake of doing what we're taught: follow your dream or
fall in line.
I adore The American Dream. It affords Triad the possibility of pursuing our
own hopes and desires. But ask yourself what cost or sacrifice is worth
pursuing it to the fullest, because at the end of the day, when all accounts are
settled, someone has to pay for you to be able to cash in. How far are we
willing to go to make our dreams a reality at the expense of someone- or
everyone? These are tough questions I ponder. And you have to be awake to
ponder them.
