econstruction of Main Street for the City of Belleville, IL; master plans for Carondelet Park, Lafayette Park, Fox Park and Hyde Park all in St. Louis, MO; the master plan for the 220 acre War Memorial Park in Little Rock, AK; a vision plan for the 306 acre Dix Park in Raleigh, NC; the $119 million redevelopment framework plan for the Old Townsite Development District Plan, Pearland, TX; and the streetscape plan for Baytown Downtown Main Street Plan, TX. In addition, Hoal is working with a non-profit community organization on the design and development of a place of celebration for the Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing project. This project is Missouri’s first underground railroad site celebrating the escape of nine enslaved persons from St. Louis across the Mississippi River to Illinois as well as representing and interpreting many of the most famous enslaved people’s route to freedom along the south to north freedom corridor of the Mississippi River. Recently, Hoal’s firm was one of five national firms selected to lead district planning for the Unified New Orleans Recovery Plan. This is a unified city-wide process with outreach to the Diaspora throughout the country to develop a plan to assist New Orleans to rebuild from the nation’s most significant natural disaster, Hurricane Katrina. Hoal is leading district planning for the Central City/Garden District, the English Turn District, and the Lower 9 th Ward, as well as completing neighborhood planning for Algiers. The projects Hoal has led have received over 60 design and planning awards at the local, state and national level, including the following national awards: the 2004 American Institute of Architects National Honor Award for Regional and Urban Planning, the 2002 Congress for the New Urbanism National Award for Excellence in Regional Planning and the 2002 Outstanding National Planning Award from the American Planning Association for the Confluence Master Plan: A Conservation, Heritage and Recreation Corridor, St. Louis; the 2000 Honor Award for Planning from The American Society of Landscape Architects for the St. Louis Downtown Action Development Plan; the 2000 Outstanding National Planning Award for Implementation from the American Planning Association for the Forest Park Master Plan; the 1999 Catherine Brown Award for Landscape Urbanism from the Congress for New Urbanism and the 1996 James C. Howland Award for Urban Enrichment from the National League of Cities for the Forest Park Master Plan. In 2002 the Confluence Master Plan was selected by the US Secretary of Agriculture as one of three projects in the country for presentation at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa. John Hoal’s work has been published in a number of journals and professional magazines including Iowa Architect, Landscape Architecture, Places: A Forum of Environmental Design, Planning and Urban Land. He has been interviewed on ABC Nightline and National Public Radio as an urban design and development expert. In addition, John Hoal is the Director of the Mayors’ Institute on City Design: Midwest, a program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts to educate city mayors on the importance of urban design in the development process. Over 40 city mayors from the Midwest have participated in the Institute and received professional consultation on city design and development issues. Hoal has been a visiting critic at the University of Illinois, Chicago, has taught architecture studio’s in association with the University of Natal, South Africa focused on rural community infrastructure and buildings. Most recently, John Hoal has been teaching an urban design studio for Washington University in Tijuana, Mexico focused on many of the structural, social and ecological sustainable development issues of cross-border issues and is currently conducting research into informal urbanism in Latin America and Southern Africa. John Hoal has served on many taskforces at Washington University including the Chancellor’s Committee for Urban and Community Programs, the Program Committee for the Center for the Study of Ethics and Human Values, the Dean’s Committee for the School of Architecture, the Curriculum Committee for the Graduate School, and many Dean and faculty search committees. Hoal also serves on a number of community boards in St. Louis, including being the Chair of the Public Art Commission for Forest Park, a Commissioner on the CWE Southeast Business District, member of the Regional Water Resources Advisory Council of the East-West Gateway Coordination Council. John Hoal holds a professional Architecture degree with highest honors from the University of Natal, South Africa; a Commerce degree in Urban and Regional Development with merit from the University of South Africa; a Master’s of Architecture and Urban Design with the Frederick Widmann Prize; a Master of Arts; and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Philosophy specializing in the theory of Architecture and Urbanism from Washington University in St. Louis. Hoal is a registered architect in South Africa and a certified planner in the USA. He was a Fulbright Scholar from 1987–1989 and in 2001 was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Urban Design.
