EDITORIAL: ARTLINES EXPLORES CONTEMPORARY ARTLINES: ART AND PEOPLE
ART FOR CONTEMPORARY KIDS
This edition of Artlines, the second issue of our new-look
magazine, explores contemporary art for contemporary kids in
the art museum context. Increasingly, art museums world wide
are developing programs for young audiences. Art can promote
creative thinking and learning, and children’s programming
encourages young people to interact with contemporary art
objects and the motives and processes involved in creating them.
Since 1998, the Queensland Art Gallery has presented free
children’s exhibitions and events, and the Gallery’s Children’s
Art Centre, to be officially launched in January 2006, will
continue to develop entertaining and educational programs
for children and their families.
This issue of Artlines profiles some of the artists who have
participated in Gallery workshops and interactive art works for
children, and explores the responsibilities and challenges faced
by arts institutions when developing educational programs for
children. We also review some of the best art books available
for kids.
I hope you enjoy this issue, as well as the Gallery’s 2005
summer children’s exhibition, ‘Made for this World:
Contemporary Art and the Places We Build’. The next Artlines,
in April 2006, will focus on contemporary art from the Pacific.
