WELCOME
Over the past four summer holidays, the Queensland Art Gallery
has been alive with young visitors and their families enjoying the art
and energy of our children’s exhibitions and festivals. This year, the
Gallery welcomes faces both familiar and new to the new Gallery of
Modern Art (GoMA) and the refurbished Queensland Art Gallery for
the 2007 Kids’ APT Summer Spectacular.
The festival is presented by the Gallery’s Children’s Art Centre,
which has newly opened facilities at GoMA. The Children’s Art
Centre builds on the Gallery’s long-term commitment to encouraging
children’s engagement with and learning through the visual arts,
which it is hoped will continue throughout their lifetime. It is fitting
that the first exhibition for children and their families within the
new Children’s Art Centre spaces is Kids’ APT, part of ‘The 5th
Asia–Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’ (APT5). The Gallery
congratulates the Queensland Government for its commitment
to GoMA and the establishment of the Children’s Art Centre, and
gratefully acknowledges its support of the APT series as Founding
Supporter.
Kids’ APT broke new ground when it began in 1999 as part of APT3,
and it has since become one of the most popular aspects of the
Triennial. For APT5, 13 artists have created interactive and engaging

art works and activities for children. The works in Kids’ APT, which
are displayed in the Children’s Art Centre and in the Queensland
Art Gallery building, reflect the themes and key ideas represented
in APT5 in an interactive format. The Kids’ APT Summer Spectacular
festival from 13–28 January 2007 provides an added dimension to
the exhibition, extending the opportunities for viewers young and old
to engage with the exhibition’s art, themes and ideas.
You are invited to read on for details of the free workshops,
interactive activities, talks and performances by local and exhibiting
artists offered over 16 big days, as well as a specially designed
children’s film program showing at the Australian Cinémathèque at
GoMA. Like Kids’ APT, the Summer Spectacular festival will span the
Gallery’s two sites — the Queensland Art Gallery and GoMA.
Also, as part of the Kids’ APT Summer Spectacular, a one-day event
will be staged in regional Queensland centres. Visitors to Summer
Spectacular – Queensland will participate simultaneously in
activities drawn from the Kids’ APT program on Saturday 13 January.
Please enjoy Kids’ APT Summer Spectacular and all it has to offer
your family.

YOUR KIDS’
APT GUIDE
Scoots the green turtle is your guide around the exhibition and
festival. Sharing the same waters as many of the APT5 artists,
Scoots’ migratory pattern brings him to Queensland at just the right
time for APT5! The green turtle and its ancestors have lived in the
Asia–Pacific region for around 100 million years and feature in many
myths and legends from different cultures in the region. You’ll spot
Scoots around the Gallery, ready to join in the fun with you!
MORE ABOUT
THE EXHIBITION
APT5 2 December 2006 – 27 May 2007
The Asia–Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) is the
Queensland Art Gallery’s flagship international contemporary art
project. Established in 1993, it is the only major series of exhibitions
in the world to focus exclusively on the contemporary art of Asia
and the Pacific, including Australia.
APT5, presented at the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of
Modern Art, includes over 300 works by 37 individual artists,
filmmakers and performers, as well as two multi-artist projects.
Curated cinema and performance programs bring a dynamic new
dimension to APT5, exploring these media on a scale never before
presented by the Triennial.
