the impact <strong>of</strong> placement on the cognitive functioning <strong>of</strong> children; family’s role in working with pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in meeting the<br />

medical/psychological/educational, etc. needs <strong>of</strong> child; supporting the agency in moving a child into the appropriate level <strong>of</strong> care;<br />

the immediate <strong>an</strong>d long term effects <strong>of</strong> placement on the resource family; the agency’s role in supporting collaboration between<br />

partners; recognizing <strong>an</strong>d responding to Attention Deficit Hyperactive <strong>an</strong>d other emotional, psychological <strong>an</strong>d bio-chemical<br />

disorders.<br />

• Sexuality <strong>an</strong>d Sexual Orientation – sexuality as it relates to different age groups; recognizing <strong>an</strong>d supporting children who have<br />

been victims <strong>of</strong> sexual abuse; supporting <strong>an</strong>d responding to children who express sexual identity <strong>an</strong>d sexual orientation issues;<br />

learning to recognize <strong>an</strong>d avoid personal vulnerability to sexual maltreatment accusations <strong>an</strong>d alleged overtures for sexual intimacy;<br />

expecting, <strong>an</strong>d recognizing <strong>an</strong>d coping with exaggerated sexualized behaviors.<br />

• Communication <strong>an</strong>d Partnership – Defining the basics <strong>of</strong> communication patterns <strong>an</strong>d the dynamics involved in communicating<br />

with partners; role responsibilities in initiating various types <strong>of</strong> communication; procedures to follow when communication is<br />

problematic; defining partnership <strong>an</strong>d the various partners (resource families, agency staff, community agencies, faith based groups,<br />

biological/extended family members, pr<strong>of</strong>essional resources, other resource families) involved in communication.<br />

• Identity <strong>an</strong>d Cultural Issues – <strong>an</strong> examination <strong>of</strong> cultural, religious, ethnic <strong>an</strong>d tr<strong>an</strong>s-racial factors impacting the placement <strong>an</strong>d care<br />

<strong>of</strong> children, including the import<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> cultural <strong>an</strong>d ethnic identity; diversity; <strong>an</strong>d practical cultural <strong>an</strong>d identity issues for resource<br />

families, including grooming, hygiene, customs, m<strong>an</strong>ners, social interaction, <strong>an</strong>d dietary considerations.<br />

The result is a 20-hour training divided into 20 modules, which was submitted as documentation in the 7 th quarter report. By<br />

September 30, 2004 approximately 375 staff <strong>an</strong>d private agency providers were certified as facilitators <strong>of</strong> IMPACT. As county staff<br />

are trained, they are implementing IMPACT as the State’s <strong>of</strong>ficial pre-service training. The entire ch<strong>an</strong>geover from the GPS:MAPP<br />

training process to IMPACT should be completed by December 2004.<br />
