Mission Statement
The Ascot State School Amateur Swimming Club has been operating since 1973. The
aim of the club for this season is to offer an organised program of swimming events for
members so they get both enjoyment and satisfaction from continual improvement in
their swimming. It is a club that offers swimmers a fun yet competitive racing
environment.
Committee & Key Contact Details
This season we have introduced shared positions. This is to share the workload, as we
are all volunteers, and to enable better succession planning and handovers after each
The committee is responsible for administration, financial management and leadership of
the club. Like any successful sporting team, a successful committee requires all of its
members to work together to gain the most from each individual‟s skills and abilities and
all working towards one common goal - to ensure the club‟s success. Please support
your committee.
Club Membership
Club membership is seasonal – Oct-Mar – and is open to all students and families of
Ascot State School as well as the wider community. Membership is renewable annually.
A new online registration form must be completed each season.
Membership fees: $100 per family ($103 through Flexischools only)
Half-season fee: $50 per family (for new memberships after 1/1/2012)
Only financial members will be allowed to swim on the first official club night (or first trial
night).
Your Key Questions Answered
When do I need to be at the pool?
Friday night Swim Meets run from 6pm – 8pm. .
Is there a warm-up time?
The pool will be open for children to warm up from 5:45pm for 15 minutes. Parents are
responsible for supervising their children during warm up. Please remind your children to
stay off the lane ropes and no diving.
Is there a minimum age limit or swimming standard?
The club is open to swimmers of all standards. There are 12.5m races at the start of the
evening (6pm). Any children who don‟t feel confident enough to swim a full 25m can get
in and have a swim anyway in the 12.5m events. There are senior swimmers in each
lane to help whenever a child wants to stop. No minimum age, no minimum swim time
required. This race is perfect for younger siblings who want to „join in‟. You do not need
to register swimmers who will only participate in 12.5m races, but children do need to be
registered once they move up to the 25m races. Contact the committee to register any
new swimmers.. The maximum age of swimmers is 13 years as at the 1 st of January,
2012.
Do I have to attend every week?
No – swim club is on every Friday evening during Terms 4 and 1, once you have paid
your annual membership fee that covers you for participation in any and all Friday night
swim meets. You can attend as many or as few as you wish.
I’m not sure if my children will want to participate, can we come along one evening
and see if they like it?
Absolutely. You are welcome to come along and have one free trial evening at any stage
in the season. Just email swimclub@ascotss.eq.edu.au and let us know you‟re coming.
3
Parental Supervision (& other general sensible stuff)
Parents, you are responsible for full supervision of your children during Friday night swim
meets. Children must remain inside the pool complex throughout the evening.
All children and parents are expected to be:

respectful to others
appreciative of all volunteers and club officials
encouraging of all participation and performances
accepting of all Official decisions
please ensure that any rubbish or food/drink containers are placed in the rubbish
bins provided before you leave.
no glass permitted in swim pool complex or school grounds.
alcohol must be consumed within the designated area (according to Liquor
License restrictions). Beer cans or cups used for serving the alcohol must be
disposed of by that parent immediately on finishing the beverage.
no smoking permitted in swim pool complex or school grounds
... and be really, really nice to Committee members at all times.
If you have feedback that you would like to relay to the Committee, please contact a
committee member in private either at the pool or via email or phone.
Progression Times
25 metres
to progress to 50m
50 metres
to progress to 100m
Freestyle 25 seconds 45 seconds
Breaststroke 30 seconds 55 seconds
Backstroke 27 seconds 55 seconds
Butterfly 25 seconds 50 seconds
Parents, we love that the kids are enthusiastic about swimming as many races as
possible, but it makes for a very long night if little ones swim distances that make
for a very slow race or if the older kids swim all the 25m races as well as other
distances. By extending the progression times, we will allow for advancement and
hopefully be able to have most 50m races each night. Progression certificates will
be handed out when your child has swum the necessary time.
The Rules

A swimmer can only swim in the 50m races if they have reached the progression
time in the 25m races.
A swimmer can only swim in the 100m races if they have reached the progression
times in the 50m races.
A swimmer cannot swim in both the 25m and 50m races for the same stroke on
any one night, but a swimmer may elect to swim the 25m race instead of the 50m
race on a particular night if they wish, but they cannot swim both.
A swimmer may swim both the 50m and 100m races, assuming they meet the
100m progression time.
Swimmers can swim in the 100m Individual Medley if they have reached three out
of the four progression times for all four 25m strokes.
As far as possible, stroke rules are to be observed. There will be rule tolerances
for swimmers 8 years and under. As the season progresses, blatant breaking of
QSA rules may earn disqualification.
The one start rule applies to the Championships and Ascot Cup.
50m swims will be a dive start, with the exception of Backstroke.
There is no diving from the shallow end of the pool. All races will therefore
commence in the deep end, with the exception of the 12.5m swims where
swimmers must start in the water with a hand on the wall. In the case of any
relays, the swimmers starting in the shallow end will commence with one hand on
the bar or wall and one foot on the pool wall.
In the Championships, points will be awarded for each race as follows:
o 1 st – 6 points
o 2 nd – 5 points
o 3 rd – 4 points
o 4 th – 3 points
o 5 th – 2 points
o 6 th – 1 point
Swim caps must be worn by all swimmers in all races – red for Junior swimmers,
white for Intermediate swimmers and Navy for Senior swimmers with their swim
number clearly displayed
Swim Seniors
Our Swim Seniors are great role models for the younger members in our club as well as
being in charge of “catching” our 12.5 metre swimmers, helping our Junior and
Intermediate swimmers with a forgotten swim cap and swim number during marshaling.
They will also head our Ascot Cup team.
The Committee have selected six female and six male Swim Seniors – so a boy and girl
for each lane! So please support our Seniors. You will recognize them in their Swim Club
Senior shirts!
Why is my child a number, not a name?
In accordance with Education Queensland Policy, we are required to protect the privacy
of the children swimming at all times. As we try to reduce the amount of paper waste
produced, swimmer times and results will be published online and/or emailed. To avoid
sending documents with children‟s name on, we will be circulating all documents with the
children referred to by the Club Swimmer Number ONLY. Numbers will also be easier for
marshals and will be used for marshaling purposes.
Please encourage your child to memorise their individual Swimmer Number.
Children must wear their individually numbered Swim Club Swim Cap each week.
Our family swimmer numbers are:
