Issue 9: Wednesday 27 March 2013
FROM MRS SEDGMAN: THE PRINCIPAL
Dear All
As we finish Week 9 of a very busy school term, our students need to be congratulated on their
commitment to learning and resilience throughout the first term. Our students have continued to
work diligently right until the holidays and their thirst for learning hasn‟t faltered. Well done!
As we also approach the break from school, it‟s important to take some time to relax and escape
from the “busyness” of everyday school and family life. My suggestion would be to plan a few slow
days for children where reading a book on the couch or exploring an outdoor area or garden are the
main goals for the day.
I was fortunate to visit most Class Celebrations of Learning in the school and to talk to and have
students share their learning first hand. What a wonderful experience! I saw a wide variety of
innovative work, students fully understanding what they have learnt this term and where individual
differences and learning styles are celebrated and catered for. Congratulations to the teachers and
students at Ascot State School for „making the priorities … the priorities‟.
Congratulations to all families for raising another amazing amount from our recent Spellathon. This
money will be used to enhance the students‟ learning in many ways. This was a great opportunity to
combine literacy learning with a community activity. Well done, everyone!
No doubt everyone is looking forward to Easter celebrations and special time with families. Our Prep
students are very excited about the Easter Bonnet Parade/Grandparent‟s Day on Thursday. I wish
everyone a safe and relaxing holiday.
Regards,
Jane Sedgman, Principal
BOUQUETS
Congratulations to the new P&C Executive Team - Adrian, Catherine, Stella and David - who will lead
the Ascot State School P&C Association in 2013.
Our AGM last Wednesday was fantastic. A great deal was achieved in 2012 and 2013 is well in hand.

Wishing the Ascot State School community a Happy Easter and safe, relaxing holidays!
School resumes on Monday 15 April 2013.
KEEP A WATCH ON OUR SCHOOL THESE HOLIDAYS – PHONE 13 17 88
Parents and students can help take care of our school by reporting any suspicious after-hours
activity to School Watch on 13 17 88. By keeping an eye out we can work together to create a safer
school community and help to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in our school.
If you see something suspicious, please don‟t intervene. Call the School Watch number and let the
local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter.
TEACH YOUR CHILD TO DIAL TRIPPLE ZERO (000) AND REMEMBER DETAILS
The Queensland Ambulance Service is encouraging parents and caregivers to teach their children
how to become potential lifesavers by practising calling Triple Zero (000) with a disconnected or toy
phone or by playing an online training game at http://kids.triplezero.gov.au/.
When calling Triple Zero and requesting an ambulance, an emergency medical dispatcher will
provide advice and dispatch medical help to your location.
For this reason, it‟s also important for families to familiarise themselves with their holiday
surroundings by memorising holiday addresses and beach access codes so they can relay the correct
information to Triple Zero staff.
More information can be found at http://www.ambulance.qld.gov.au/default.asp.
FROM MRS HADDEN: MIDDLE SCHOOL YEARS 3-7
A well-deserved holiday awaits the students after a very busy and productive term of work!
I have been so pleased to see the enthusiasm and application of the children in the Middle School.
The teachers have provided excellent learning experiences and the students have enthusiastically
completed some challenging tasks.
The children have set learning targets and have worked hard to achieve their goals. The positive
nature of goal setting ensures that students are able to gauge their progress in academic and social
areas and then establish future goals which meet their needs, with the assistance and expertise of
their teachers.
Spellathon
A huge thank you to our school community for your enthusiastic support of our annual Spellathon.
The winning classes this year will be announced early in Term 2. Remember that pledges can be
made via flexischools or at school.
The money raised will be put to good use by our P& C to enhance student learning at Ascot. A big
thank you to Belinda Pollock for her assistance with counting the pledges.
Assembly
This week‟s assembly was conducted by 5D and showcased their term‟s work across the learning
areas. It‟s amazing how much learning takes place in a term and how engaging the curriculum can
be for students. Great work, 5C!
I have included a photograph of the assembly awards being presented by a very youthful Jane
Sedgman aka Eva C – it‟s true …. we all have a double somewhere.
Bullying No Way
On the last day of term students are encouraged to wear something orange to conclude our
campaign. Children are asked to donate a gold coin to participate in the Free Dress Day on the last
day of term.
Enjoy the Easter break with your family and I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready
to begin Term 2.
Sharyn
FROM MRS PROVOST-BOYLE: EARLY YEARS PREP-2
What a great start to the year we‟ve had. Our Prep students have had a flying start to school; they
are well and truly settled in their new school.
As always I‟m impressed with the learning that occurs in the school, and this term has been no
exception. This week teachers are meeting to moderate the work that has been done during the
term. The quality of work and the learning is outstanding, congratulations to teachers and students
on a great job!
Have a wonderful Easter and I look forward to seeing everyone after the holidays.
Easter Hat Parade
Parents and Grandparents are invited to the Easter Hat Parade on Thursday 28 March in the Covered
Games Court; a great way to finish off the term. Thank you to our hard working Prep Teachers and
Teacher Aides for the work that has gone into the Easter Hat Parade.
Semester One Parent/Teacher Interviews
Our focus at Ascot State School is on achieving academic success for all students through a
supportive, nurturing and challenging environment. Reporting to parents is an integral part of this
process and so each year we offer the following:
Term 1 – Parent Teacher Interview
Term 2 – Semester One - Written Report
Term 3 – Parent Teacher Interview
Term 4 – Semester Two - Written Report.
Online Parent Teacher Interview Booking System
We have scheduled Parent/Teacher interviews for you to meet with your child‟s teacher.
interviews have been scheduled from Monday 15 April to Friday 26 April.
The
Interviews will be of 15 minutes duration and held in your child‟s classroom. To ensure the
interview process runs smoothly, we would appreciate parents being on time for their interviews.
To co-ordinate the interviews we have employed an online booking system to assist parents in
securing their preferred interview times. The procedure is as follows:
If you wish to see your child/ren‟s teacher, you need to secure an appointment time using this
system. If you do not have access to the internet your local library may be able to help, or
alternatively you can contact your class teacher via note, email or call to book an interview on
line for you.
The booking system will only be accessible from 6am Monday 25 March through to 6am
Monday 15 April. No interview requests will be accepted outside of these times.
In your web browser type in the school website www.ascotss.eq.edu.au and when this appears
click the link for 'Parent-Teacher-Interviews' in the quick links section on the left hand side of the
front page. This will take you directly to the booking site for our school.
ALTERNATIVELY, in your web browser type:
http://sobs.com.au/pt/parent.php?schoolid=797
Booking System is now open!
NB. Please note for those parents with students in Mrs Narelle Orr‟s class, 2C, interviews will not be
scheduled during this time as Narelle will be returning from leave next term. Interviews for students
in 2C will be held later in the term. More information will be sent out closer to the time.
We believe this new booking system will be a more efficient and stream lined process. A letter with
this information was sent home on Monday and an email sent to all parents. A paper copy of the
instructions will also be available from the office.
Say No to Bullying
On Thursday children are invited to wear orange to support „Say No to Bullying Day‟ and the antibullying
message. Such an important message for all children, we encourage children to speak up
about any situation that they find uncomfortable.
Junior Assembly: Congratulations to 2B on a wonderful assembly on Monday, such an innovative
way to highlight the „High 5‟ message.
Junior Assembly Schedule for Term 2 – Be sure to mark the dates in your calendar.
A reminder email will be sent out in the first week of term 2. PowerPoints will be uploaded to the
school website after the sessions.
REMINDER: Playgrounds Before School: Children, students and siblings, are not permitted on
school playgrounds before school. There is no supervision provided and we prefer children to
come into class calm and ready for learning.
Classrooms are open from 8.30am; if you are at school before 8.30am can you please wait in one of
the eating areas with your child/ren. Please note that supervision of children at this time is parents‟
responsibility.
Playgrounds After School: Our preference would be for students not to play on the playgrounds
after school due to the fact that there is no supervision provided by the school. If you choose to
allow your child/ren to use the playground/s you are agreeing to actively supervise your child.
There have been a number of parents raising concerns about hands on behaviour in the playgrounds
after school. As this is something that is happening outside school hours of supervision it is parents‟
responsibility to address any issues that may arise.
Thank you for a wonderful term, enjoy the holidays!
This Thursday‟s Free Dress Day will raise funds to donate to The Alannah and
including bullying.
If you come in „free dress‟, please remember to bring along a gold coin to donate to
this worthy cause. The Student Council are encouraging you to come dressed in something
ORANGE to remind us to say No to Bullying. While this day is a great opportunity to show off your
INTERSCHOOL DEBATING 2013
At the commencement of Term 2, we will be inviting any interested Year 6 and Year 7 students to
through an impromptu, short preparation topic. We will be selecting a Year 6 team and a Year 7
team, each consisting of five members.
This year, the Round Robin Competition will consist of four debates held over a longer period of time.
This will allow teams more preparation time than in past years.
Please note the schedule for Year 6: Wednesday 19 June, Thursday 1 August, Wednesday 4
September and Wednesday 16 October.
The schedule for Year 7 debates: Thursday 18 July, Thursday 15 August, Wednesday 11 September
Happy Holidays!

Swimming
Swimming lessons have now finished until Term 4. Thank you to all the parents who helped with the
implementation of the swimming program. Your assistance is greatly appreciated and, particularly
with the younger grades, leads to more effective outcomes for students. I would like to acknowledge
the wonderful support for one of our beginner swimmers in Year 2. A very patient parent has been
working with one of our girls to develop her swimming confidence and improve her mobility. A big
thank you to Kylie T for your continued support.
Perceptual Motor Program
In Term 2 Prep and Year 1 students will participate in group perceptual motor activities starting in
Week 2 and finishing in Week 9. Most of these activities require adult assistance or supervision and
so I would ask for three parents/grandparents each week to help run the activities. If you are
available to help at the times detailed below could you please see your class teacher next term to
put your name on a roster. Thank you for your assistance.
Being Active is Fun (lunch time activities)
We are running fun events promoting activity each lunch time this week. Monday lunch time is for
Prep and Year 1, Tuesday is for Years 2 and 3, Wednesday is a tug-a-war-athon for Years 4 and 5
and on Thursday Year 7 will be playing the teachers in a game of touch football. Hopefully the Year
7 students will take pity on us and there won‟t be too many injured teachers by the end of the game.
If the weather interferes with our plans we will hopefully run any postponed events in Week 1 next
term.
Cross Country Training
Boys and girls interested in trialling for the school Cross Country team should continue running
during the holidays. This will improve their fitness and also give them a better chance of being
selected into the school team. Year 6/7 boys and girls will run a Cross Country event on the first
Friday back after the Easter break. Year 4/5 classes will run their team selection trial on Friday Week
