Traffic As parents know through many, many communications, we regard children's safety to be of the utmost importance. Please obey the road rules. It is illegal to park in a two minute zone; to double park, which is happening as cars line up all the way down Pringle Street or around the corner of Anthony and Massey Streets; and to stop and park along the yellow lines around the school. Traffic gets held up and everyone's safety is put at risk. My staff are attending to students' safety and cannot and should not have to act as police officers. One suggestion is to pick up at 3.15pm as students are still supervised in the pick-up areas and the traffic has cleared. It is so much calmer. A reminder to our new Prep parents that you are not able to park in the two minute zone between 8.00am-9.00am. Some parents are walking their children to the classroom and have parked illegally. Brisbane City Council Traffic Officers visit the school regularly and substantial fines can be imposed. Please, let's have a safe environment for everyone. There is nothing better than seeing children full of excitement and high expectations. Thank you for sending your child to school with a great attitude and ready to start the year. It is also pleasing to see the school uniform worn so well. Year 7 Leadership On Monday the final five candidates for School Captain, Lucinda B, Alice C, Freya D, Matthew L and Sam K gave outstanding speeches to the Years 5, 6 and 7 students outlining the qualities which would make them the ideal School Captain. All of the students, including those students who delivered speeches last week, must be commended for their excellent efforts. What wonderful speeches delivered with confidence and sincerity. Well done, girls and boys.
I would like to extend my congratulations to Freya D and Sam K who were elected School Captains for 2013. This week individual Year 7 teachers will take nominations for Class Captains. Candidates for Class Captain will present speeches to their class group and a class election will take place. Good luck to all candidates. Our 7 Leadership Induction Ceremony will take place on Monday 25 February where all students are inducted as student leaders. I am sure they are aware of the honour and responsibility that comes with holding one of these positions. Nut Allergies We have several students who are allergic to nuts and peanut products. We ask all families to consider not sending nuts, peanut butter or foods containing nut products to school. Even the smallest smear or contact with such products can cause an anaphylactic response from some students. I look forward to catching up with parents at our Parent Information Evenings. It is a great opportunity to hear of the learning challenges planned for your child, become familiar with the class routines and to share in the beginning of the year excitement evident in all the children. Once again, welcome back to another fantastic year of learning, friendship and fun. Sharyn FROM MRS PROVOST-BOYLE: EARLY YEARS PREP-2 Parent-Teacher Information Sessions These are a regular event at the commencement of each school year and provide an opportunity for you to get to know teachers as they share routines of the class, expectations of students, aspects of the learning program and assessment and reporting procedures. I look forward to meeting more parents on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Open communication and the partnership between home and teachers is a key factor in a student‟s success at school. It‟s great to see so many parents signing up to help in classrooms. Reading Parent Information Sessions Parent Reading Workshops are being held for Parents with students in Prep and Years 1 and 2. The session will focus on practical tips for reading with and supporting your child‟s reading at home. Prep Parent Reading Session Tuesday 12 February, 9.30-10.30am in the Staff Room Years 1 and 2 Parent Reading Session Thursday 14 February, 9.30-10.30am in the Staff Room. Why reading is so important So much in our life depends on reading – from simple (but very important) road signs to assembly instructions to kit projects and complicated contracts. Being able to read makes life safer and easier and helps us learn more about a whole range of topics. Reading also gives a lot of pleasure. It can take your child to new places – real or imaginary; excite them with clever stories of mystery or show them events in history. You, as role models, can have a big impact on your child‟s love of reading. If they see how much you enjoy reading, they will expect to enjoy reading too. Over time your child learns more about words and reading. With practice they start to recognise lots of common words, such as once, because and mother, which help make reading easier. Reading is like a lot of things; the more we have a go at it, the better we get. As we get better, we are more likely to enjoy it.
