Issue 2: Wednesday 6 February 2013
FROM MRS SEDGMAN: THE PRINCIPAL
Dear All
I had the privilege to hear five superbly executed speeches on Monday from Matthew, Sam, Alice,
Freya and Lucinda who were vying for the positions of Boy School Captain and Girl School Captain.
To hear well planned, cleverly written speeches delivered by confident speakers was wonderful.
Such poise and composure! Very impressive. It was very obvious that students took pride being a
student at Ascot State School and they valued the opportunities afforded to them. The themes in
their speeches ranged from Work Hard Play Fair; No Bullying; No Litter; Get Involved; Confidence
and Give It a Go. I‟m right behind them.
Congratulations to all nominees and let me introduce Freya and Sam who were elected as School
Captains 2013:
“My name is Freya D and I am honoured to be representing you as one of your School Captains this
year. I have been an Ascot State School student since Year 1 and I have a brother in Year 5, a sister
in Year 1 and an older sister in high school. At school, I am in the Senior Choir and the Senior Band.
Art is one of my favourite subjects and I like drawing animals, especially horses. Outside of school, I
play hockey and water polo and do athletics. I enjoy swimming and I am a member of Ascot Swim
Club. I love music and I play piano and flute. I like spending time playing with my dog, Zuka, and
my new pet cockatiel, Charlie, who I am training to talk. I might ask Sam for some training tips as
he also has a cockatiel. I am very busy during school terms, even at the weekends, so l love the
holidays when I can spend more time with my family and friends. Thank you for electing me to be
one of your student leaders. I will do my best to make this a great year for everyone!”
“My name is Sam K and together with Freya, I will be School Captain for this year. My journey
started at Ascot State School in Year 3 with Mrs Widt being my first teacher. Since being here, I
have made great friends and have experienced many of the opportunities that Ascot has to offer.
We both have some great ideas, so I am excited about working with Freya and the other senior
students. We know it will be a fantastic 2013.”
The start of the school year is somewhat hectic as we all get into routines at home and at school.
There is a lot of information which needs to be communicated and our Parent Teacher Evenings this
week play an important component of communicating that information to parents. I would ask
parents, particularly new to the school, to ask your child's teacher anything you are unsure about.
Thank you for your attendance at these evenings. Teachers are always keen to meet all their
students' parents.

Traffic
As parents know through many, many communications, we regard children's safety to be of the
utmost importance. Please obey the road rules. It is illegal to park in a two minute zone; to double
park, which is happening as cars line up all the way down Pringle Street or around the corner of
Anthony and Massey Streets; and to stop and park along the yellow lines around the school.
Traffic gets held up and everyone's safety is put at risk. My staff are attending to students' safety
and cannot and should not have to act as police officers. One suggestion is to pick up at 3.15pm as
students are still supervised in the pick-up areas and the traffic has cleared. It is so much calmer. A
reminder to our new Prep parents that you are not able to park in the two minute zone between
8.00am-9.00am. Some parents are walking their children to the classroom and have parked illegally.
Brisbane City Council Traffic Officers visit the school regularly and substantial fines can be imposed.
Please, let's have a safe environment for everyone.
Regards,
Jane Sedgman, Principal
BOUQUETS
Thank you to parents who have volunteered to be Class Parent Reps. The CPR Program
plays an important part in our school life. I look forward to our meeting at 9.15am next
FROM MRS HADDEN: MIDDLE SCHOOL YEARS 3-7
Getting Started
It has been a wonderful start to the school year. There is nothing better than seeing children full of
excitement and high expectations. Thank you for sending your child to school with a great attitude
and ready to start the year. It is also pleasing to see the school uniform worn so well.
Year 7 Leadership
On Monday the final five candidates for School Captain, Lucinda B, Alice C, Freya D, Matthew L and
Sam K gave outstanding speeches to the Years 5, 6 and 7 students outlining the qualities which
would make them the ideal School Captain. All of the students, including those students who
delivered speeches last week, must be commended for their excellent efforts. What wonderful
speeches delivered with confidence and sincerity. Well done, girls and boys.

I would like to extend my congratulations to Freya D and Sam K who were elected School Captains
for 2013.
This week individual Year 7 teachers will take nominations for Class Captains. Candidates for Class
Captain will present speeches to their class group and a class election will take place. Good luck to
all candidates.
Our 7 Leadership Induction Ceremony will take place on Monday 25 February where all students are
inducted as student leaders. I am sure they are aware of the honour and responsibility that comes
with holding one of these positions.
Nut Allergies
We have several students who are allergic to nuts and peanut products. We ask all families to
consider not sending nuts, peanut butter or foods containing nut products to school. Even the
smallest smear or contact with such products can cause an anaphylactic response from some
students.
I look forward to catching up with parents at our Parent Information Evenings. It is a great
opportunity to hear of the learning challenges planned for your child, become familiar with the class
routines and to share in the beginning of the year excitement evident in all the children.
Once again, welcome back to another fantastic year of learning, friendship and fun.
Sharyn
FROM MRS PROVOST-BOYLE: EARLY YEARS PREP-2
Parent-Teacher Information Sessions
These are a regular event at the commencement of each school year and provide an opportunity for
you to get to know teachers as they share routines of the class, expectations of students, aspects of
the learning program and assessment and reporting procedures. I look forward to meeting more
parents on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Open communication and the partnership between
home and teachers is a key factor in a student‟s success at school. It‟s great to see so many parents
signing up to help in classrooms.
Reading Parent Information Sessions
Parent Reading Workshops are being held for Parents with students in Prep and Years 1 and 2. The
session will focus on practical tips for reading with and supporting your child‟s reading at home.
Prep Parent Reading Session Tuesday 12 February, 9.30-10.30am in the Staff Room
Years 1 and 2 Parent Reading Session Thursday 14 February, 9.30-10.30am in the Staff Room.
Why reading is so important
So much in our life depends on reading – from simple (but very important) road signs to assembly
instructions to kit projects and complicated contracts. Being able to read makes life safer and easier
and helps us learn more about a whole range of topics.
Reading also gives a lot of pleasure. It can take your child to new places – real or imaginary; excite
them with clever stories of mystery or show them events in history. You, as role models, can have a
big impact on your child‟s love of reading. If they see how much you enjoy reading, they will expect
to enjoy reading too.
Over time your child learns more about words and reading. With practice they start to recognise lots
of common words, such as once, because and mother, which help make reading easier. Reading is
like a lot of things; the more we have a go at it, the better we get. As we get better, we are more
likely to enjoy it.

Art Teacher: Carla Adams joins the Ascot Team! Mrs Adams is our Art Teacher.
Art lessons will start next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. Year 2 and 4 are our
first classes to experience the lessons.
Thank you to our P&C for funding and supporting the Art Teacher position.
School Absences
Parents are reminded that if their child is away from school, could they please phone the School
early in the morning? Parents can ring our ABSENTEE LINE ON 3326 9360 and leave an
appropriate message.
Parenting Tip Sheet
Each fortnight I include a Parenting Tip Sheet in the Digest. All Parenting Sheets can be found on
the school website. This week‟s topic is on Friendship Skills. Friendship skills are generally
developmental. That is, kids grow into these skills given exposure to different situations and with
adult help.
Early Years Update
How to get involved
As a parent, you play a vital role in your child‟s education. By getting involved in the school you can
help your child make a smooth and happy start to their education.
You can do this by:
introducing yourself to your child‟s teacher
sharing information with your child‟s teacher
keeping the teacher informed of any changes that may affect your child
talking with your child about their day
attending parent information sessions
reading the school newsletter
checking school bulletin boards
attending family fun days
participating in a safe walk to school program with other children or families who live nearby
attending parent meetings and talking to other parents
volunteering to attend school excursions or participate in classroom activities
participating in school working bees.
Things you can do at home
You can also help your child progress at school by taking some simple steps at home:

take an interest in your child‟s schooling and value the importance of attending. Ask your child
over dinner, “What new things did you do at school today?”
2014 Waiting List
The Waiting List for 2014 is now open.
Melissa

FROM THE ART TEACHER
My name is Carla Adams and I am joining your Ascot State School community this year as a
specialist art teacher. I am very excited to work within a school with such a wonderful reputation
and appreciation for the role art can play in students‟ holistic education.
My goals are to explore many different styles of art, in as many different mediums, with your
children.
I have previously worked mostly with high school art students and have felt that the biggest hurdles
students face in participating and enjoying Visual Arts is feeling locked in to the idea of the only
„good art‟ being realistic art. In their early years, children seem to draw all the time and then
around the age of 8 or 9, inhibition starts to creep in and they start to classify themselves as either
„good‟ or „bad‟ at it.
By giving your children the opportunity to explore Visual Arts in all its varieties and forms, I hope to
instil a „have a go‟ attitude and the confidence to try new things without a pre-conceived idea of
„good‟ or „bad‟. Art needs to be enjoyed as much for the process as for the end result! Parents are
welcome to join us for the fun!
I will be running an Art Club during Tuesday and Wednesday lunch times beginning in Week 4.
There will be a series of workshops that are targeted toward different year levels and each will
explore a different theme and media. There will be a small cost (approx. $5.00-$10.00) to cover
the cost of extra materials and numbers will be limited to allow for physically larger projects to be
tackled. A timetable, with cost, will be sent home in the next two weeks.
EXCITING NEWS - COMING TO ASCOT SOON!!! ‘AUTHORS AT ASCOT’ WEEK
Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful P&C Association, through the Teacher
Scholarship Program, I am planning a week to celebrate writing at Ascot.
„Authors at Ascot Week‟ will be held from 18 – 22 February 2013. We are very
fortunate to have 4 outstanding children‟s authors visiting us and conducting a 45
minute session with each class from Prep to Year 7. They are Tristan Bancks,
Peter Carnavas, Brian Falkner and Julie Fison.
As well, students will be involved in a number of other writing opportunities
during the week, ranging from supervised lunchtime activities, classroom
activities, buddy activities to whole school activities.
The aim of my proposal is for writing to become the focus for the whole Ascot community for a week.
I want this project to raise the profile of writing at our school and engage students in worthwhile
experiences that extend beyond the classroom. By providing stimulating activities and the access to
real authors and writers, I aim to engage and motivate all students and, in particular, those not
usually interested in writing.
„Authors at Ascot‟ week will bring the school community together and give everyone the chance to
get involved, be inspired and enthusiastic about writing. For me, it will be an opportunity to learn
from experts in the field and build my personal expertise, which I will be able to share with all Ascot
teachers and students.
Thank you to those parents who contacted me at the end of last year. I will be in contact soon to
discuss how you can become involved. Classroom teachers would also like to hear from
parents who would be prepared to share with their class, the role that writing plays in
their everyday work.
If you would like to be involved in this inaugural, exciting event, I look forward to hearing
from you. There are many ways in which you can be involved, including supervising lunchtime
activities, displaying student work and assisting in the classroom.
Please feel free to email me: lclac1@eq.edu.au or contact me via my 7/6C pigeon hole.
Many thanks
Lorraine Clacher
MASSEY STREET CROSSING
Please be aware that the Massey Street crossing is unmanned at present. The supervisor
is ill and Queensland Transport is having difficulty recruiting a replacement supervisor.
Please contact the school office if you know of anyone interested in such a position.
In the meantime, please take care and be aware of that the Massey Street
crossing is not supervised.

P.E. NEWS
Welcome to our new Prep students and parents and welcome back to our returning students. In P.E.
lessons this term our Prep students are participating in locomotor activities and games and
developing hand eye coordination with bean bags. All other year levels, in their pool lessons, will be
developing age appropriate safety and survival skills. It is important that children participate in all
lessons to develop lifesaving skills and endurance and we would ask that, if your child cannot
participate for any reason, they provide a note of explanation. Thank you to the Year 1 parents who
have been hopping in the pool to help students (2 is good and 3 is great). For all other year levels
one parent is required to act as a spotter. Also, great to see almost all children arriving for lessons
in appropriate costume - including sun shirt and cap.
City District Sport Trials
There will be quite a few trials for City District sports this term. We are usually only allowed to send
4 or 5 students for each trial. We will receive up-to-date information about these trials at next
Monday‟s City District Sports meeting and will keep you informed as information comes to hand.
Work Days/Classes
If you need to contact us, details are as follows:
Paul Harris works all days except Wednesdays and teaches Years 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7.
Alayne Graham works Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and teaches Prep, Years 1 and 5.
City District Swimming 2013
Format: This carnival is a selection trial for City District schools to select a team to compete at the
Metropolitan North Swimming Trials (Primary) at Valley Pool on 27 February 2013.
Venue: Valley Pool, Wickham Terrace, Fortitude Valley
Date: Wednesday 20 February 2013.
The Ascot State School swimming team selection process will be completed and finalised by Friday 8
February. Boys and girls selected will receive the necessary documentation to compete at this
Carnival. Ascot State School is required to supply two officials for the meet. If you can assist, please
tick the box on the information letter?
We look forward to teaching the children this year and appreciate the assistance of parents in
helping provide resources (Coles shopper dockets) and delivering the P.E./Sports program
(swimming, perceptual motor program, refereeing and coaching). Please let us know if you have any
particular expertise and would like to be involved in the program?
