Northland completed an
impressive first trip through
the 2013 Minneota College
Athletic Conference Northern
Division women’s basketball
schedule with an
easy 73-44 win over Central
Lakes Wednesday.
Halfway through the regular
season-ending homeand-home
series against
each division foe, Northland
is 7-0. The average margin
of victory in those seven
starts is 28 points. The
Raiders, who trailed the
Pioneers by just one game in
the division standings at the
start of the night, lost by 29.
Northland is 18-1 overall
with a 14-game winning
streak that covers all of
December and January.
Four Pioneers hit double
figures as Jenna Lundon
scored 19 points, Eva
Lampert and Sarah Durand
both had 12 and Whitney
Rogstad 11.
Lindsay Monson and
Taalyr Egeness led Central
Lakes with 14 points each.
Northland led 36-25 at
halftime. The final was the
the Raiders struggled
through a 30 percent (16/54)
shooting performance.
It was a 7-for-14 night at
the free throw line for the
winners. The visitors were
9-for-15.
Northland won the
rebound battle 46-32.
Central Lakes had more
turnovers, 20-13. The
Pioneers scored 22 points off
turnovers; the Raiders just
three.
The Pioneers begin their
schedule stretch run today
(Saturday) at home against
Vermilion. The 2 p.m.
Losses mount for NCTC men
January wasn’t a good
month for the Northland
Community and Technical
College men’s basketball
team.
Since returning from a
Christmas/New Year’s holiday
break, the Pioneers have
lost nine straight games –
the last seven to Minnesota
College Athletic Conference
Northern Division foes.
The latest setback came
Wednesday at home against
Central Lakes, 71-59.
Northland is 3-17 overall.
Goodridge/Grygla ended a
four-game losing streak
Monday by beating Roseau
64-40 in a girls high school
basketball game played at
Grygla.
McKenzie Bakken scored
24 points, Courtney Boutain
15 and Sarah Kiesow 11 for
the Chargers, who led 35-26
at halftime. Kiley Borowicz
led the Rams with 14 points.
Goodridge/Grygla was 27-
for-61 from the field (44 percent)
and 10-for-13 at the
free throw line. Roseau had
a 6-for-15 free throw night.
The ability to limit their
turnovers (14) against a
Roseau press was a key factor
in the outcome, according
to Chargers coach Brent
Philipp. “Our guards –
Courtney Boutain and Syra
Naik – did an unbelievable
job handling their press,” he
said.
Goodridge/Grygla is 7-9.
Chargers fall to Patriots 47-33
Struggling to put an
offense together, Goodridge/
Grygla lost its fourth
straight boys high school
basketball game Tuesday,
falling to host Win-E-Mac
47-33.
The 8-7 Chargers were
coming off a 66-35 Friday
setback at the hands of
Northern Freeze.
“A much better game
than the last one,” reported
Goodridge/Grygla coach
Vern Johnson. “We did a
good job on defense and
rebounding. We are struggling
to score right now.
We’re getting good shots, but
they aren’t falling.”
Win-E-Mac led 27-20 at
halftime.
Three players shared
game-high scoring honors
with 12 points each: the
Patriots’ Jake Walker and
Marshall McKeever; the
Chargers’ Hunter McMillin.
Both sides had trouble
with their shots. Goodridge
was 12-for-33 from the field
(36 percent); Win-E-Mac
went 17-for-49 (35 percent).
Andre Thomas led the
winners with 18 points.
Taylor Scott had a 12-point
Maurice Blackmon and
Kyle Olson kept Thief
River Falls off the scoreboard
at the start, but the
Prowlers finally solved the
Lake of the Woods goalie in
the second period and went
on to beat the Bears 4-1 in a
Tuesday boys high school
hockey game at Baudette.
Olson made it interesting
with a 37-save night.
A scoreless tie was shattered
when goals by the
Prowlers’ Wyatt Ortloff and
Isak Bergland just 49 seconds
apart produced a sudden
2-0 advantage 3:52 into
the second period.
Three minutes later it
was 3-0 on a goal by Logan
Engelstad.
Cole Nelson put the Bears
in the scorebook before the
team left the ice for the second
intermission, but the
Prowlers got that one back
when Keaton Huot scored at
10:42 of the third period.
Tanner Holmes stopped
21 shots for the winners.
