Thief River Falls girls beat Warroad 57-43...
Win No. 18 for Prowlers
It wasn’t pretty, but Thief
River Falls picked up its
18th win in 19 starts
Tuesday by beating visiting
Warroad 57-43 in girls high
school basketball.
The game was slow from
the get-go, with the two
teams combing for just 22
points over the first 13 minutes.
Down 12-10, the Prowlers
enjoyed a mini-burst that
included a rebound basket
by Sheena Lee and fast
break buckets by Brooke
Anderson and Lee for a 16-
12 lead with 4:27 remaining
in the first half.
Thief River Falls led the
rest of the night. It was 23-
17 at halftime when junior
guard Brooke Yaggie made
one of two free throws with
0.1 seconds on the clock.
The difference was just
31-27 following a 3-point
shot from the corner by
Lindsay Fast on a Warroad
in-bounds play with 12:25
left, but the spread climbed
to 48-34 with just 3:29 showing
following back-to-back
baskets on the inside by 6-1

“It was not a very good
game,” acknowledged Thief
River Falls coach Jeff Loe
after watching the two
teams combine for 41
turnovers and 34 percent
field goal shooting. “We were
flat, sluggish. We didn’t
match up with their intensity.”
The Prowlers got a 20-
point game from Yaggie. The
6-1 Brekke blocked seven
shots to go along with an 18-
point, 13-rebound doubledouble.
Warroad’s Krista
Friesner, a 5-9 senior guard,
shared game-high scoring
honors with Yaggie.
Thief River Falls, after a
36 percent 9-for-25 first half
field goal shooting performance,
warmed up to a 45 percent
21-for-47 figure for the
night. The Prowlers were
13-for-20 at the free throw
line.
Northland Community
and Technical College has
announced that Scott
DCamp has accepted the
position of head wrestling
coach at school.
Officials at the NCTC
campus in Thief River Falls
announced earlier that
wrestling would be added to
the Pioneers’ athletic program
beginning in the 2013-
14 school year.
“Scott’s experience and
connections in our region
will be a great benefit to our
college,” said Steve
Crittenden, NCTC Dean of
Student Development. “He
is committed to seeing our
program succeed and has
some great ideas on how to
move the program forward.”
In regards to his new
position, DCamp commented,
"It is an honor to be
named head wrestling coach
at Northland Community
and Technical College. I am
thankful for the opportunity.
This program will provide a
much-needed opportunity
for students in northern
Minnesota and eastern
North Dakota to compete in
wrestling while continuing
their education. We plan to
build a top-notch program
that will showcase the talent
we have in this region.”
The search is under way
to fill the roster, according to
Crittenden. “Scott will primarily
spend his time this
year recruiting and working
on getting the program
organized,” he explained.
“We expect the program to
add 20-25 students to the
college.”

Madison Brekke was this first half rejection in
Tuesday girls high school basketball action against
Warroad. A 6-1 sophomore, Brekke also scored 18
points and pulled down 13 rebounds in the Prowlers’
57-43 win.
Warroad shot just 26 percent
from the floor (18/68).
The visitors went to the line
only eight times, making
three.
A 37-33 Warroad advantage
on the boards included
a 19-11 edge on the offensive
end.
“We shot really poorly in
the first half, and gave up
too many second and third
shots in the second half,”
explained Loe.
Warroad topped the busy
turnover charts 22-19.
The Prowlers’ depth has
been compromised as they
continue to play without two
freshmen who have been
contributors to their success.

In addition to facing those
teams, DCamp said the
Pioneers will be filling its
schedule against NCAA

Entertaining. That certainly
describes the two
Thief River Falls vs. East
Grand Forks boys high
school basketball match-ups
this winter. The Prowlers
won a Dec. 14 meeting 72-
71. Tuesday, the Green
Wave prevailed 89-80. Both
won at home.
That’s a lot of points. In
fact, it’s the first time in history
the Prowlers have
scored 80 points in a loss.
The results put East Grand
Forks at 12-5 and Thief
River Falls 11-5.
This one was a see-saw
game in the truest sense.
East Grand Forks went
on a 17-1 run midway
through the first half and
took a 14-point, 48-34 lead
into the break.
Thief River Falls
responded with a run of 24
unanswered points in a
nearly six-minute stetch to
turn a 54-36 deficit into 60-
54 lead.
The Prowlers were up 66-
61 with 7:05 remaining,
only to have the Green Wave
put together an game-winning
18-2 surge.
Jim Warmack, a recent
addition to the East Grand
Forks 1,000-Point, padded
his numbers with a 30-point
game. Ben Bjornson netted
23 and Austin Holy contributed
16.
With 15 of his 18 points
coming in the second half,
Jacob Joppru led a group of
four Thief River Falls double
figure scorers. Jacob
Leier and Nick Hoffard both
had 15, while Jorde Hutton
finished with 13.
It was the first of six
straight road trips for the
Prowlers, whose Friday trip
to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton
will be followed by games at
Stephen-Argyle, Grand
Rapids, Detroit Lakes and
Crookston before they host
Fergus Falls Feb. 16.
