His friends were also trying to convince him to go into a room. For about 15 minutes, law enforcement tried to persuade Gant to go into a room. They told him that he would be physically forced into the room if he didn’t cooperate. During that time, Gant requested to go into another room several times and asked to have a Bible. They responded that he begins his stay in one room and then moves into another. He was provided with a Bible. They said he had no choice but to go into the room. Otherwise, they would have to physically move him into the room. The doctor and nurses soon told Gant to hand over his clothing and belongings. He appeared to be confused and not listening to them. Gant continued to say that he wanted to go into another room, which was occupied by another patient. Another 15 minutes went by, and Bassett and Mattson attempted to get him to cooperate. They said they would have to remove Gant’s clothes if he didn’t cooperate. Gant twice appeared to cooperate and then began asking questions that didn’t pertain to what was happening. At one point, he turned over his phone and another electronic device. However, he continued to say that he didn’t want to go into the room. He also began asking questions that didn’t make sense. Officers told him that they weren’t going to negotiate with him and they would have to remove his clothes if he didn’t cooperate. Gant allegedly soon began swinging at officers and hospital staff while running toward the door. Mattson ran after Gant, who then ran into Puetz at a doorway. Puetz held onto Gant’s sweatshirt collar as he continued to try moving forward into a hallway. Gant began swinging his fists and pushed Puetz backwards. He then allegedly punched Puetz about 20 times. Puetz fell backwards onto the floor, and Gant ran over the top of him to continue down the hallway. Mattson ran after Gant and physically forced him facedown onto a bed. Other officers and hospital staff soon arrived and helped subdue him. Puetz remained on the floor and appeared to be in extreme pain. A backboard was used to transport him to the hospital’s ER. He was later transported to a Fargo, N.D., hospital, where he underwent surgery for a dislocated hip and a fracture. Brickson’s class plans to go on a field trip with the St. Bernard’s fifth graders to Mt. St. Benedict Monastery in Crookston. As part of the program, Mosbeck presented an energy program to 170 FMS students and also to Brickson’s class. She gave each student an energy savings kit, provided by Minnkota and the City of Thief River Falls through its Conservation Improvement Program. Inside the kit were: • An energy-savings booklet; • Two compact fluorescent light bulbs; • A low flow shower head; • A bag to test the amount of water coming out of the shower per minute before and after the installation of the low flow shower head; • A whistle that attaches to a furnace filter to notify occupants when the filter needs to be changed; • A thermometer to check the temperature of the refrigerator and the freezer to see if they needed to be turned down; • Aerators for leaky faucets in the kitchen and bathroom; • Plumber’s tape; • A temperature guide for the water heater; and • A shower timer. The timer attaches to the shower wall and goes off after someone has been in the shower for five minutes. “I think some of the kids were going to use it as a competition in their families to see if they could get in and out of the shower in five minutes,” Mosbeck said. Students in Brickson’s class said they were able to get out of the shower in five minutes. One student, Alex, claimed he was able to shower in two-and-a-half minutes. One of his classmates, Abby, noted the importance of the shower timer. “You shouldn’t be taking an hour or a half-hour shower,” she said. If the students installed all of the items in the kit, their families were expected to save about 1,700 kilowatthours or $200 over the course of a year. “My mom noticed our water bill went down a little bit,” said sixth grader Megan Gagner. She noted she used the aerators and the shower timer. Her family plans to install the low flow shower head on a new shower in the future. Once they installed some or all of the items, the students returned their work sheets to their teachers. Then they received an LED night-light. This spring, Mosbeck plans to present the program and kits to Challenger Elementary School fifth graders. MDA to hold listening sessions on new ag water quality certification The Minnesota Department of Agriculture will hold listening sessions at six locations throughout the state in February to gather input on the Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program. The new program has been in development over the past year and is designed to accelerate voluntary adoption of on-farm agricultural practices that enhance water quality. Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson says farmers and rural landowners are encouraged to attend these sessions to provide feedback on the program prior to its implementation. In return, they would not be required to implement additional water quality practices for the duration of their certification. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the University of Minnesota, Crookston among the nation’s “Best Online Bachelor’s Programs” for 2013. The U of M, Crookston was ranked in the top quartile at #60 out of the 247 higher education respondents in this year’s survey. Rankings were based on factors such as graduation rates and academic and career support services offered to students among others. The campus ranked especially high in the subcategory Student Services and Technology coming in at number 18. While some can manage to quit without assistance, most need help. “Cold turkey is only affective 3 to 5 percent of the time,” Sheldon said. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the use of effective cessation treatments can double or triple rates of successfully quitting. One example of an effective treatment is QUITPLAN Services, a free counseling service that is available to all Minnesotans. “We promote QUITPLAN services because we know there are a lot of people who wish to quit smoking who need that help,” Sheldon said. “The key with QUIT- PLAN and other support programs is the expert counseling that they provide. Patches and medication will help deal with craving, but there is still a psychological addiction.” Sheldon said most health plans will also offer free services that will aid a smoker’s efforts to quit. During the initial call, counselors will gather intake information to truly understand what the patient’s habit is like, what are their cravings and what are their triggers? “Counselors work one on one to help you get through the process,” Sheldon said. “It’s not a one-size fits all program.” Sheldon said the length of time it takes to quit varies based on the level of commitment. “Generally, if they are just thinking about quitting, they can quit within three weeks,” Sheldon said. “If they’ve been trying to quit due to a family member death or something else, they can quit much quicker.” QUITPLAN also offers an online program that is more self-directed. It can be accessed at www.quitplan.com. QUITPLAN counselors can be accessed by phone at 1-888-354-PLAN. “We would encourage anyone in any stage to call the help line or check out the motivation on Quitplan.com,” Sheldon said. Stephen/Argyle Central High School Principal Mark Kroulik presented an honorary high school diploma to Harry Anderson on Thursday, Jan. 24. Anderson, 90, would have graduated in 1940. The campus currently has more than 700 online only degree-seeking students. While U.S. News has applied some of its rankings standards used for traditional schools, measures were developed and used to evaluate online programs. U.S. News defined a distance education program as “a program for which all the required coursework for program completion is able to be completed via distance education courses that incorporate Internet-based learning technologies. Distance education courses are courses that deliver instruction to students who are separated from the instructor and support regular and substantive interaction between the students and the instructor synchronously or asynchronously.” Online bachelor’s degree programs were ranked in three different sub-categories: Teaching Practices and Student Engagement, Faculty Credentials and Training, and Student Services and Technology. Ranking indicators for the Teaching Practices and Student Engagement category included class size, teacher response timeframe, student collaboration policy, and anti-plagiarism screening policy among others. Student services and technology-based indicators included live tutoring and 24/7 tech support, the ability for students to receive classes through both audio and visual, and having all courses centralized into a single student information system, such as Blackboard or Moodle. A high school graduation 73 years later (Continued from Page 1) The destroyer encountered a typhoon near Japan in June 1945. The typhoon broke 100 feet of the bow off of the USS Pittsburgh. Despite the damage, it stayed afloat. Anderson also served on the USS Mindoro, an aircraft carrier, before his military service ended in 1946. Two years later, Anderson married Hazel Nelson. Over the years, he farmed. He also worked several wintertime jobs, including working at a sugar beet plant and serving as a diesel mechanic and assembling machinery in Stephen. He retired in 1984. The couple moved from rural Stephen to Valley Home on Dec. 15, 2011. Anderson and his wife have six children, Renae Seibel, Arlan Anderson, Anita Hendrickson, Gregory Anderson, Mary David and Cindy Paschke. He estimated he has 14 grandchildren and just as many greatgrandchildren.
