The project is being funded by a $415,000 USDA loan with additional funds from the Minnesota Department of Economic Development and the city. “The event will be held at City Hall, 122 Central Ave. The public is invited to attend, and refreshments will be served. “Landkamer and city officials will highlight how the new facility will make a positive impact on Lancaster. She will also discuss how investing in rural communities creates jobs and continues to help the United States down the road of economic recovery. “The new center will have a large multipurpose room, handicapped-accessible bathrooms and a commercial kitchen. Workers have begun moving utilities, but major construction on the facility hasn’t yet started.” - North Star News of Karlstad, July 19, 2012 City approves bid for Minnesota St. bridge replacement Warren - “Warren City Council members accepted a bid of $413,537 for the replacement of the Minnesota Street bridge when they met Tuesday, July 10. The acceptance is contingent on project approval by the Marshall County Board of Commissioners and a permit being issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. “Steve Emery, an engineer with Widseth Smith Nolting, told council members that bids were opened that morning and bids came in slightly less than anticipated. Two of the bids, those from R.J. Zavoral & Sons and Spruce Valley Corporation, were only $82 different. Emery said this is one of the closest bids he has ever seen and the bids were carefully considered to make sure they were comparable. R.J. Zavoral & Sons was awarded the bid as it was the lowest. “The state bridge bonding fund will contribute $319,691 to the Minnesota Street bridge project. “The city’s potential share to replace the bridge is $197,276, including engineering expenses. City Administrator Shannon Mortenson explained to council members that this amount will be taken out of the general fund and then levied to taxpayers to pay it back.” - Warren Sheaf, July 18, 2012 by April Scheinoha Reporter Amid a standing-room only crowd, the Thief River Falls City Council approved a Tax Increment Financing District for a new 60-unit apartment complex at its meeting Tuesday, July 17. The council unanimously approved the district for the controversial apartment complex, which will be located near Challenger Elementary School. Council Member Floyd Erickson was absent from the meeting. The approval was met by applause from many individuals in the audience. Most, if not all, of those clapping were affiliated with two of the city’s largest employers, Digi-Key and Arctic Cat. The apartment complex, consisting of two buildings, will be constructed by Northridge Hospitality Management/M & U Construction at 1603 Pennington Ave. The entire project is estimated to cost $3.5 million. Once completed, it’s estimated to have a full market value of $4.6 million. At its Nov. 1, 2011, meeting, the council approved rezoning the area for the apartment complex. Council Member Dean Swanson, who represents that ward, voted in opposition. The approval was against the wishes of the Thief River Falls Planning Commission and many residents. One Planning Commission member, Don Barron, resigned in protest after the council approved rezoning the property. Earlier this year, the council received an application for a TIF district at the future location of the apartment complex. Prior to its July 3 meeting, the council held a public hearing about the proposed TIF district. At that time, the council decided to postpone its decision until Tuesday’s meeting. Rebecca Kurtz attended the latest meeting Tuesday. Kurtz is employed with Ehlers, which is the city’s financial advising firm. She noted that the Minnesota State Auditor’s Office indicated there were seven completed districts in Thief River Falls receiving TIF in 2011. Their total tax capacity amounted to $3,880,360, with $133,188, or 3.43 percent, (Continued on Page 5) Groundbreaking for Health Center in Warren set The ground breaking for the new North Valley Health Center facility in Warren will be held Thursday, July 26, 4 p.m. at the building site east of the Good Samaritan Center. Everyone is invited to attend the event and enjoy a time of fellowship following the ceremony. Attendees should use McKinley Street to access the building site and for parking. There will be seating available under a large canopy erected on grass alongside the east side of the Warren Good Samaritan Center. Dignitaries ranging from legislators to builders and those instrumental in the planning and funding of the project will be in attendance. The current Health Center building was built in 1958 as a solely acute care facility. In the early 1990s, the Warren Medical Clinic practice owned by Dr. LaBlanc was purchased and Hanging on merged with the then Warren Community Hospital. With the change, a new name was chosen for the facility, and the North Valley Health Center included a family practice medical clinic along with hospitalcare. Through the years, the clinic practice has grown from one medical staff person to four. Many out-patient services have also been added. One of the growing services has been radiology with that department going from only offering x-rays to now including ultrasound and CT scans. With the growth in clinic patient numbers and many changes in how health care services are used, the present facility reached its capacity. Beginning Wednesday, the grandstand attractions included a Rockie Lynne concert, two nights of Thunder on Hooves bullride and a demolition derby on Sunday. Marshall County Fair begins The Marshall County Fair will be held Wednesday, July 25 through Sunday, July 29 at the Marshall County Fairgrounds in Warren. Here are a few of this year’s events: • Kickoff Parade at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 25. The parade will follow a route starting at the staging area behind Warren- Alvarado-Oslo High School, run along First Street to Johnson Avenue, and go east on Johnson ending at the fairgrounds. The New hangar considered Mattracks considers building a hangar at TRF Airport by Scott DCamp Reporter The world leader in rubber track conversion systems is looking to expand its operation with the construction of a hangar at the Thief River Falls Regional Airport. Karlstad-based Mattracks is looking for an airport that will allow it to construct a hangar to store its four-aircraft fleet and the Thief River Falls Regional Airport may be the best fit. Mattracks CEO Glen Brazier said his company has been interested in building a hangar judges’ viewing stand will be set up at Cenex C-Store. Following the parade, the PNA Polish Dancers will perform at 8 p.m. at the Vonasek Stage. The carnival will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Also, an Extreme Battle of the Saddles will be in the main horse arena after the parade. • Grandstand show Thursday evening. Eagle Creek will be in the grandstand at 6 p.m., the Back Behind the Barn Boys at 7:30 p.m. and for the past 15 to 18 years. “We have four aircraft and having all of them in one place would be a huge asset,” Brazier said. “Right now, in order to house them, we have them at three different airports. Thief River Falls is a prime lociation for us because of the crosswind runway.” Brazier said the aircraft are used primarily for business trips. Mattracks products are shipped separately through a commercial carrier. Brazier said Mattracks is considering a couple other airports but he did not specify which. approved the district for the

controversial apartment complex,

Ellsworth, IA, Municipal

Hospital Women’s Guild. I like

the book because most of the

recipes are old ones but are very

well written – easy to understand.

You’ll enjoy these:

Perhaps you have used

this recipe before and forgotten

it. This cake will be

great for get-togethers this

summer. This recipe is well

written too, and should be

simple to follow for those of

you who have usually just

“thrown things together,” or

those of you who are just

starting to cook.

CHOCOLATE SHEET CAKE

AND FROSTING

1 stick butter or margarine

1/2 cup cooking oil

1 cup water

2 cups sugar

2 cups flour

1/4 cup cocoa

2 eggs, beaten

1-1/2 teaspoons soda

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon salt

Cook butter, oil and water to

a boil. Pour over mixture of

sugar, flour and cocoa in a large

bowl. Mix with spoon and let

cool. Add eggs and beat with

mixer or with spoon.

Dissolve soda in buttermilk

and add this mixture to butter

in bowl, along with vanilla and

salt. Pour into greased and

floured sheet bake pan. Bake at

350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

Frosting

1 stick butter or margarine

1/3 cup buttermilk

4 cups powdered sugar

1/2 cup cocoa

1 cup nuts

1 teaspoon vanilla

Melt butter and mix in the

buttermilk. Pour into bowl and

beat in powdered sugar and

cocoa. Add nuts and vanilla.

Frost the cake while warm.

FRESH PEACH CAKE

1/2 cup butter

1-1/2 cups brown sugar (firmly

packed)

1 egg

2 cups flour

1 teaspoon soda

Dash of salt

1 cup buttermilk

4 peaches, peeled and diced

1/4 cup sugar, mixed with 1 teaspoon

cinnamon

Cream butter with brown

sugar until light and fluffy. Beat

in egg. Sift flour with soda and

salt and add to creamed mixture

alternately with buttermilk,

beating until smooth after

2 pound pork shoulder or chuck

roast

1 medium sized onion, sliced

1 teaspoon salt

Sauce

1 cup liquid from cooking meat

1 teaspoon salt

1 bottle ketchup (regular size)

1 green pepper, chopped

2 tablespoons dry mustard

2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons vinegar

1-1/2 teaspoons each, ginger,

allspice and cloves

Buns

Cover meat with water. Add

onion and salt. Cook until very

tender. Take meat from liquid

(save liquid) and shred meat.

Mix sauce ingredients

together and place in large pot.

Add shredded meat to sauce

and heat. Moisten with additional

liquid that was saved

from meat until it is of serving

consistency. Serve on buns.

FAVORITE PIE CRUST

Char Frandsen

3 cups flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup plus 1 tablespoon shortening

(Crisco is good)

1 egg

1 teaspoon vinegar

5 tablespoons cold water or milk

Mix flour and salt in bowl

with fork. In small bowl, beat

egg and add vinegar and water

or milk. Mix. Pour egg mixture

into flour mixture and blend

together with fork, don’t beat,

just blend together with fork.

Roll in ball and chill a bit, then

roll.

An Oklee man entered a

guilty plea Monday, July 16 in

Red Lake County District Court

for a felony burglary case.

Sheriff Mitch Bernstein said

Gravelle used building keys to

enter another apartment at

Southview Apartments in

Oklee. He then took several

pieces of electronics equipment

valued at more than $1,000. At

the time, Gravelle was working

as the resident maintenance

supervisor for the owner of the

apartment building.

After removing the stolen

items, Gravelle stored them in

an on-site storage shed.

Sheriff’s deputies found most of

the stolen items inside the shed.

Gravelle disposed of some of the

stolen items, but, as part of his

plea agreement, he will be

ordered to pay the victim any

outstanding restitution.

I do not fish or swim. Last

week, I fished. I did not need to

swim.

I spent most of my youth in

the “kiddie pool” at the Warren

Pool during swimming lessons. I

never learned to swim and am

stubborn enough that no adult

could teach me otherwise. For

this reason, I never learned to

fish, I fear water.

I work for R and R Farms

each fall during the sugar beet

harvest. I work for them, but

they are also my friends. This

summer, they asked me along

on their annual fishing trip. I

was hesitant; floating upon a

body of water is essentially the

same to me as floating upon a

body of molten lava.

We arrived at Ballard’s

Resort on a Wednesday. I

expected maybe a few cabins

and a picnic table, but was

shocked at the beautiful resort

with which I was presented.

These are really nice digs. I was

able to see much of the resorts

from the inlet where we began

our fishing trip and all are lovely

places.

Our trip on the boat was as

eye-opening to me because it

was uneventful. I was clinging

to a life preserver as we began

the trip but quickly put it away

when I realized the boat easily

bullied its way through the

water and was as steady as a

school bus.

Our guide was Justin

Johnson. Justin worked hard to

make sure our day was rewarding.

He constantly put us onto

fish and slipped in between and

around us to quickly net the fish

as we pulled them up.

Justin baited my hook and

insisted on fresh bait even when

I was satisfied with what was on

the hook. Honestly, I felt

ashamed to have someone cater

to me to that degree, but Justin

was really something.

Five of our crew jumped into

a launch with “Mer” (short for

Merlin), who guides fish during

the summer and pheasant in

South Dakota during the fall.

He reminded me of someone

you’d read about in an outdoorsman

magazine. I never spoke to

him, but just listened and was

pretty impressed.

The highlight of the fishing

trip was the shore lunch. It is

amazing to me that there is an

island with basic toilet and

cooking facilities in the middle

of nowhere. The guides fileted

the fish and fed the seagulls and

pelicans first, then fired up the

stoves for their human scavengers.

The meal was fantastic;

I have never eaten that much

fish in one sitting.

I don’t know if I will fish

again, but it was a good experience,

and one I’d never had

without the kindness of my buds

from R and R. I got my picture

taken with the first fish I ever

caught, along with our guide

Justin, and I was probably the

least photogenic of the three. It

was the first of four fish I caught

that day, which is a pretty successful

day for an amateur. My

launch-mate, Ed Rosendahl,

later asked me if I would fish

again. Based on my incredible

success, I said I felt I had

already mastered this sport and

would probably have to move on

to something more challenging.

I guess I was full of more than

just fish.

RLF teen has charges pending

for stealing firearm

A 16-year-old Red Lake Falls

male has charges pending for

theft of a firearm and possession

of stolen property. He allegedly

stole a Remington Model 7 22-

250 caliber rifle out of a parked

vehicle in the city.

Red Lake County Sheriff

Mitch Bernstein said another

Red Lake Falls juvenile has

been questioned in connection to

this theft. Criminal charges are

pending in the matter.

In the early morning hours

Wednesday, deputies allegedly

discovered the firearm at the

16-year-old boy’s apartment at P

& S Apartments. At the time,

they were conducting a search

for Leon Cisneros III, 24, Red

Lake Falls. Cisneros is a registered

sex offender accused of

violating the terms of his probation.

After the firearm was found,

the boy allegedly admitted

stealing the rifle. He was taken

into custody.

Later that morning, deputies

arrested Cisneros at P & S

Apartments.

The program, which provides

this month by government, military

and foundation leaders at

a special event in Washington,

began in late summer 2011 and

officially wrapped up during the

Airport Authority’s meeting on

Wednesday, July 18, with a final

payment of $57,636.46 to Knife

River.

The 2010 FAA-ordered project

got off to a slow start in 2011

due to the state-government

shutdown in July. Originally

holding up the start of construction

was a delay in the

Minnesota Pollution Control

Agency’s issuance of a National

Pollutant

Discharge

Elimination System permit to

Knife River.

The portion of MPCA that

approves NPDES permits was

closed due to the shutdown and

it took action from Special

Master Kathleen Blatz, the

retired Minnesota Supreme

Court justice who was given

authority to deem certain state

functions as essential, and

Ramsey County Chief Judge

Kathleen Gearin, who needed to

concur with Blatz’s recommendation,

to get the permitting

portion of the MPCA up and

running again.

Hedrick, Commissioner

Darryl Tveitbakk and Triller

met with Blatz on July 15,

which was just three days

before Knife River’s selfimposed

deadline to begin the

project. That portion of the

MPCA was allowed to reopen,

the permit was approved on the

following day and construction

began on time the following

Monday.

The project was completed in

three phases. Phase one was

site work to convert the taxiway

for the 13/31 runway into a temporary

runway. Phase two was

switching electrical to the taxiway

and phase three was the

mill and overlay of the runway.

The bulk of construction was

completed in late summer and

fall 2011, with remaining work

being wrapped up this spring.

“I’m very pleased with the

project,” Hedrick said during

Wednesday’s meeting. “FAA

knew the time constraints and

worked with us.”

Hedrick added that a device

used to measure pavement

unevenness came up with several

zeros, meaning the pavement

is as smooth as the machine can

read.

Both construction and engineering

costs came in under

budget. Construction with a

change order was originally

estimated to be $5,040,716.46

and engineering was expected to

be $912,781.87. The final construction

total was

$4,932,543.32 – a savings of

$108,173.14 – and the final

engineering total was

$787,583.85 – a savings of

$124,959.47.

said when he puts an estimate

together, he doesn’t know what

the contractor’s schedule will be

maintenance, police and fire

protection. Bjorkman encouraged

the council to learn these

costs before voting on the creation

We spend an inordinate - and in my opinion,

an unhealthful - amount of time on

computers. I find that’s just as true for

adults as it is for children. One study

reported recently that Americans stare at

computer screens for at least eight hours a

day, more time than we spend on any other

activity, including sleeping. More than onethird

of users get online before getting out

of bed. And, according to the story that

appeared in Newsweek recently, the average

teen processes an astounding 3,700

texts a month.

As you might have guessed by now, studies

are beginning to conclude that Internet

use may be an addiction. Some say the

Internet is just another delivery system,

but, according to some studies, it is creating

a whole new mental environment. It’s

rewiring our brains. In fact, the brains of

people who have spent an inordinate

amount of time on computers, look a lot like

brains of drug addicts.

Lately, I’ve been unplugging. It’s taking

some time. It’s day-to-day. You know, it’s

one step at a time.

We just need to turn off that temptress

and do things in the real world. But it’s

hard to ignore computers because they

keys on a keyboard so small you need a

magnifying glass to see them. And, most

likely, you aren’t on your deck. More than

likely, you’re seated on an overstuffed sofa,

amongst empty snack wrappers and stacks

of unread magazines and newspapers. Your

“computer room” probably looks more like a

television episode about people who are

hoarders than a successful, well-adjusted

adult. It’s far from a romantic encounter.

It’s even less romantic when you realize

you’re sharing that romantic time with a

cold, heartless computer.

I like that commercial where the daughter

says she finally got her parents to join

Facebook, but sadly, they only have 19

friends. She has hundreds of “friends.” The

commercial cuts to her parents who are outside

riding bikes.

I like the idea of going unplugged every

once in awhile. We need to turn off the computer

and go outside and use our imaginations.

Take that step, to recharge your batteries

and rediscover the world outside.

Only, do it one step at a time.

Traveling art show on

A traveling art show will

bring artwork by seven regional

artists to the Roseau Public

Library as part of its scheduled

exhibits throughout northwest

Minnesota this year. Artwork

from the 13th annual Regional

Art Exhibit sponsored by the

Northwest Minnesota Arts

Council was selected for the

tour. This year‘s regional exhibit

took place in Kennedy from

April 26 to May 6.

The traveling exhibit consists

of varied artworks, from watercolors

to photographs, and

includes a woodcut and a mixedmedia

item. Each artist offers a

completely unique perspective.

the city of Thief River Falls.

The alleged suspect was

caught about 12 hours after the

robbery, which was reported at

9:58 p.m. Wednesday. Herwens

Pierre Saint, 20, Thief River

Falls, has felony charges pending

for aggravated robbery and

terroristic threats. He was

arrested.

The taxi driver said he picked

up the man at Cedar Cove. The

man asked to be driven to the

Subway along Third Street.

Along the way, in the alleyway

between Duluth and Arnold

avenues, the man pulled out a

knife. He put the knife to the

taxi driver’s side, told the driver

to pull over and told the driver

to give him money. Upon receiving

less than $200, the robber

ran to the north.

Legion baseball game at the Multi-Events

Warroad scored early, then

held on for a 7-6 Wednesday

American Legion baseball win

over Thief River Falls. The

teams decided on a single nineinning

contest instead of playing

the usual seven-inning doubleheader

games.

It was the final home game of

2012 for the Bandits, who

dropped to 15-10. They close out

the regular season Sunday with

a make-up doubleheader at East

Grand Forks. Ninth District

Division I tournament will be

played July 25-29 in Detroit

Lakes.

Warroad got out of the gate in

a hurry when Ryan

Pietruszewski started the game

with a single to right, went to

third on a double to center by

No. 2 hitter Brandon Newhouse

and scored on a sacrifice fly by

No. 3 batter Ross Merriman.

Tanner Pederson walked to

open the Warroad second

inning, then was replaced as a

runner by Justin King, who

reached base on a fielder’s

choice. Pietruszewski dropped a

two-out single into short left

field and Newhouse drove in

both teammates with a double

to center for a 3-0 advantage.

Thief River Falls pulled even

in the third inning when Brady

Brooks and Turner Storm beat

out infield hits and Wyatt

Wheeler was hit by a pitch to

load the bases with nobody out.

Landon Sanders was also hit

by a pitch to bring home the

first run. A two-out Ian Lund

single to center tied it 3-3.

Warroad opened up a 7-3

spread by scoring two runs in

both the fifth and sixth innings.

Two errors and an RBI single

by Pederson produced the fifth

inning runs. Alex Sandal hit a

two-out, two-run double to center

the next frame.

Thief River Falls chipped

away at the Warroad lead with

single runs in the seventh,

eighth and ninth innings.

Consecutive inning-opening

singles by Storm, Holden

Nelson and Sanders plated the

seventh inning run, but a double

play and an infield groundout

kept it from being a big

inning.

Wheeler reached base on a

fielder’s choice and eventually

scored on a passed ball in the

eighth inning.

Thief River Falls made it

interesting in the ninth when

Jared Schaefer drove a two-out

triple into the right field corner

and scored on a Brooks single to

left for a one-run difference.

Wheeler’s infield hit put the

tying run at second base, but a

fly-out cut the rally short.

The Bandits sabotaged their

efforts by leaving 13 runners on

base and committing four

errors.

Center. Newhouse took off from third on a

hard-hit ball by Alex Sandahl that was fielded

by Bandits third baseman Ian Lund, who

made the throw to Sanders for the out.

The champions, who overcame

8-5 final-inning deficits in

both Games 1 and 2, improved

to 11-6 with the wins.

“The team did not quit all

day,” reported Thief River Falls

coach Kenny Geiser. “Coming

back two games in a row in the

final at-bat really shows that.”

Thief River Falls scored 31

runs and came up with 35 hits

in the three games.

“Impressive day at the plate

for the girls,” noted Geiser. “We

really hit with power, which

helped drive in some runs.

Sabrina (Okeson), Megan

(Jones) and Crystal (Amundson)

swung the bats very well. We

also got quality pitching when

we needed it. Megan, Bailee

(Nordheim) and Crystal all

proved how deep our staff is – a

luxury for a coach.”

Three leagues form Region 9

in Minnesota Class C baseball.

In addition to the Northwest

Polk League that includes Ada,

Fertile, Moorhead Bluejays and

Moorhead Mets, along with the

Lake & Pine Northwest League

that features Cass Lake, Nevis,

Walker and Bemidji Blue Ox.

Each league will send its top

two playoff finishers to the

region tournament scheduled

Aug. 5, 6 and 11 in Bemidji. The

double-elimination event will

send its top two teams to the

Class C state tournament that

will be played in St. Cloud

beginning Aug. 18.

Top two seeds for each of the

On the schedule, it was listed

as a doubleheader in Thief River

Falls. Instead, a Tuesday

American Legion baseball

match-up became a single-game

affair in Stephen-Argyle. But

the fans weren’t shortchanged.

The contest was extended to 12

innings before the visiting

Bandits came out a 7-6 winner.

Post 117 scored twice in the

top of the seventh to tie it and

send the game into extra

innings as Evan Dondelinger

drew a lead-off walk, Wyatt

Wheeler singled with one out

and Landon Sanders followed

with a two-run double.

Both sides scored in the 11th.

For the Bandits, Brady Brooks

doubled with one out, Wheeler

walked and Sanders singled to

make it 6-5, only to have

Stephen-Argyle tie it in the bottom

of the inning on a one-out

single by Blake LaBine.

Thief River Falls’ next at-bat

produced the game-winner.

Holden Nelson led off with a

double. The next two batters

were retired, but Nelson, who

had advanced to third on a fielder’s

choice, broke the tie when

he scored on an infield single by

Brooks.

That capped a comeback from

a 5-0 third inning deficit for the

visitors.

Nick Hoffard pitched into the

tenth inning for the Bandits,

but the win went to Sam Matter

in relief.

“Wild game,” said Thief River

Falls coach Courtney Skjerven.

“We came out really flat.

Hoffard was leaving the ball up,

and they were hitting it all over

the place. They can hit the ball.

Their 1-3 hitters are about as

good as we see at the top of a

line-up. Nick settled in, though,

and shut them down.”

Matter’s clutch mound work

was instrumental in the win,

indicated Skjerven, who said,

“He really battled and got us out

of some tough spots. He took a

step tonight, and it should really

build his confidence. We were

proud of him.”

Sanders had a 3-hit game

that included a two doubles and

three RBI.

“Landon had a big night for

us,” confirmed Skjerven. “He

seems to be on base all the time

and picks up a hit or two a

game. Nelson and Wheeler

picked up a couple of big hits

each, and Brady got the bat

going with two hits, including

the infield single that scored the

winning run.”

Davis Mills had a three-hit

game for Stephen-Argyle.

Thief River Falls had five

errors, but four of those came

early in the game, and a key

defensive play in the ninth kept

the game going when Wheeler,

the Bandits’ centerfielder, threw

out LaBine trying to go from

first to third base on a one-out

single by Mills. Third baseman

Ian Lund scooped up the throw

and made the tag.

The Minnesota WorkForce Center in Thief River Falls and the

DEED Offices in Crookston & Roseau have grants available through

the Workforce Investment Act and Minnesota Dislocated Worker

Programs to assist students with tuition for Fall Semester 2012. In

some cases, monies may be provided for student fees and books.

To qualify, one must be a Dislocated Worker which is defined as a

person who can provide documentation that s/he has had a

permanent loss of employment due to a(n):

• Business closing

• Downsizing

• Department shut down

• Union lock-out (for American Crystal Sugar workers only)

• Loss of a major source of income due to the death, separation,

divorce or disability of a spouse

• Exhaustion of Unemployment Insurance Benefits

• Discharge from the armed services for any other reason than

“dishonorable discharge” (military spouses may also be eligible)

There is also a provision that allows for assistance to be provided to

one who has been unemployed, through no fault of his/her own, for

15 of the last 26 weeks (not necessarily consecutive) and who has

sufficient work history in the same field, at least 20 hours a week or

more, for six of the most recent 26 weeks (not necessarily

consecutive).

We also have a program whereby one qualifies by income for his/her

family size, but we are out of funds for Fall Semester 2012; however,

we are happy to take applications for future assistance.

We do not provide assistance for A.A. Liberal Arts degrees, nor do

we provide assistance for first year Practical Nursing or Aircraft

Maintenance students.

be held Friday in TRF

Shelf, North Country Food

Bank has scheduled several

mobile food distributions in

Thief River Falls. The first distribution

will take place Friday,

July 27 in the parking lot of the

Thief River Falls Evangelical

Free Church, 211 Arnold Ave.

E., from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Area Food Shelf recently

temporarily closed its doors to

reorganize. Its operating costs

have exceeded its income for the

past two years. It intends to

reopen this fall.

In the meantime, North

Country is working closely with

the food shelf’s board of directors

and other community leaders

to bring food into the community.

Food Shelf has long been a

strong partner and one of the

largest food shelves in our 21-

county service area in northwest

Night Advocate

Violence Intervention Project serves victims of domestic violence and

abuse. VIP is seeking an advocate for evening-overnight and weekend

shifts. Night Advocate typically works 4 to 6 shifts a month. This

position fits nicely with a day job. These shifts include 8 hours of paid

“sleep time” with advocate available to return to duty if needed.
