City Council 

evaluates airport

progress was shown toward 

balancing the budget at the 

Monday, Sept. 24 meeting 

of the Red Lake Falls City 

Council. 

“Interim 

City 

Administrator David 

Kankel reported during the 

Sept. 12 meeting that he 

found an unexpected 

$169,000 bill from LHB, an 

engineering firm working 

on a plan for a $4.5 million 

sewer project for the city. 

Kankel contacted the firm 

and it was found that the 

city doesn’t have any debt 

with LHB and the bill was 

in error. 

“Another area of scrutiny 

during the Sept. 12 

meeting was the cost of 

running the airport. 

“During Monday’s meeting, 

Jason Brumwell presented 

information he had 

gathered about selling the 

airport. Initially one of the 

proponents of the idea, 

Brumwell explained that 

he found the process of selling 

may not be beneficial. 

According to Brumwell, 80 

percent of the costs associated 

with maintaining the 

airport are reimbursable 

and current rental rates 

are much lower than other 

regional airports, prompting 

the council to discuss 

raising rental rates to 

make the airport self-sustaining. 

“If the city were to sell 

the airport, it would be 

responsible for paying back 

a large portion of the projects 

completed over the last 

20 years, as well as half of 

the land value, to the state, 

Brumwell explained. It 

would also take approximately 

two years to close 

the airport in preparation 

for the sale. 

“No decisions were 

made, but council discussion 

ended with looking 

into raising rates and other 

efforts to make the airport 

self-sustaining because 

selling the airport now 

could cost the city money.” -

Officials concerned over mail-in balloting 

Proposed constitutional 

amendment 

being debated 

The debate over the proposed 

constitutional amendment 

requiring voter identification 

heated up this week. On 

Monday, Congressman Collin 

Peterson, Sen. Leroy Stumpf 

and a host of Kittson and 

Marshall county officials gathered 

at the Hallock courthouse 

to express concerns over the 

future of mail-in balloting and 

the costs to rural counties if a 

constitutional amendment 

restricting voting passes this 

November. On Tuesday, Oct. 2, 

Stumpf and Rep. Dan Fabian 

will present their views on the 

issue to the Marshall County 

Board of Commissioners at 

10:30 a.m. in the commissioners’ 

board room. 

In Hallock, Peterson said he’s 

concerned over the future of 

mail-in balloting and the costs 

and consequences to eligible voters 

in his congressional district, 

especially seniors who may not 

have access to a birth certificate 

to secure a photo ID. “Over 90 

percent of eligible voters in 

Kittson and Marshall counties 

rely on mail-in balloting every 

election cycle. These are 

Minnesotans who depend on 

being able to return their ballots 

Chamber drill team prepares 

for Prowler Homecoming parade 

The Thief River Falls Chamber of Commerce Drill Team has been preparing for the Lincoln High 

School Homecoming Parade on Oct. 5. The participants in the organization are looking forward to 

their first performance. The parade starts at 1 p.m. near Lincoln High School in downtown Thief River

Newfolden “Zumbathon” benefits 

the American Cancer Society

Shannon Converse, a rehabilitation 

specialist lead at Sanford 

Medical Center in Thief River 

Falls, will be leading a two-hour 

‘Zumbathon” on Sunday, Oct. 7. 

The event will be held from 1 to 

3 p.m. at the Newfolden 

Elementary School Gym. 

Registration and check-in 

will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. 

Day-of-event registration cost is 

$25 with a tank top and $15 

without. Proceeds from the 

Zumbathon will benefit the 

American Cancer Society. 

All about Zumba 

The Oct. 7 Zumbathon will 

basically be an extended session 

of Zumba, which is a Colombian 

dance fitness program. Zumba 

was created in the 1990s by 

Columbia-native Alberto "Beto" 

Perez. After several failed 

attempts, Perez successfully 

introduced his unique Latinthemed 

cardio and dance routines 

at a Miami, Fla., health 

club in 1999. 

Zumba classes, typically lasting 

about an hour, alternate 

easy-to-follow fast dance moves 

with slow dance moves for an 

interval workout that is known 

for toning muscles and burning 

hundreds of calories. 

Converse has been a big fan 

of Zumba since she took her first 

class in December 2010. “I took 

it from Community Ed in Thief 

River Falls,” Converse said. “I 

fell in love with it and knew I 

had to teach it.” 

Converse was already a 

group exercise instructer for 

Newfolden Community Ed. 

Prior to becoming a certified 

Zumba instructor, Converse 

taught cardio circuit, muscular

One week after a stand-off 

ended with a peaceful resolution, 

a Warroad man said he will 

continue to fight for his family’s 

land. 

Donald Kakaygeesick, 52, 

has lived his entire life on the 

seven-acre Kakaygeesick Bay 

property that is located on the 

shore of Lake of the 

Woods. Now 

Kakaygeesick and 

his 91-year-old 

mother, Florence, 

are being evicted 

from the property 

by Red Lake 

Nation, which is 

recognized as the 

property’s owners 

after purchasing it 

f r o m 

K a k a y g e e s i c k ’ s 

cousins in 2008. 

Earlier this 

month the 

K a k a y g e e s i c k s 

received a letter 

from Red Lake 

Nation stating that 

they had until Sept. 

15 to remove all of their belongings 

and vacate the property. 

Kakaygeesick said Red Lake 

Nation threatened to arrest him 

and his elderly mother. 

Kakaygeesick said he did 

what he could to turn away contractors 

last week. The standoff

replaced given “most of our 

townships don’t have a place to 

vote – a building, town hall or 

other accessible location to reintroduce

Growing up in Thief River 

Falls, Michele (Enerson) Hauf 

was always coming up with stories. 

She never thought she 

would become an author, and 

she admits that her grammar 

teachers will probably cringe 

when they realize what she now 

does for a living. 

Twenty-two years ago, Hauf 

was on maternity leave after 

giving birth to her son, Jesse. 

Inspired by a TV remake of 

“Dark Shadows” and its depiction 

of a vampire as a romantic 

character, she grabbed an old 

typewriter and began typing one 

of her stories. It didn’t matter 

that she had no formal training 

outside of some English classes 

at Lincoln High School and the 

Area Vocational Technical 

Institute in Thief River Falls. 

Hauf continued pecking away 

at the story after returning to 

work full-time and caring for 

her family, which also includes 

husband, Jeff, and daughter, 

Ashley. Two years and three 

garage-sale typewriters later, 

“Dark Rapture” was finished.

characters. She said she sometimes 

starts writing and sees

used for breakfast or served 

with a bowl of soup. They 

sound just right for one of

HAM AND CHEESE 

MUFFINS 

Doris Heath, Bryson City, NC 

2 cups flour 

3 (slightly rounded) teaspoons 

baking powder 

1 teaspoon salt 

1/2 teaspoon soda 

1 cup milk 

1/2 cup mayonnaise 

1/2 cup finely chopped cooked 

ham 

1/2 cup shredded cheddar 

cheese 

In large bowl, combine flour, 

baking powder, salt and soda. 

Combine remaining ingredients 

and stir into dry ingredients 

just until moistened. Fill 

greased or paper-lined muffin 

cups 2/3 full. Bake at 425 

degrees for 16-18 minutes or 

until muffins test done.

PRALINE BROWNIES

1/2 cup packed dark brown 

sugar 

3/4 cup butter or margarine, 

divided 

2 tablespoons evaporated milk 

1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans 

2 cups packed light brown sugar 

2 eggs 

1 1/2 cups flour 

1 teaspoon vanilla 

1/2 teaspoon salt 

In saucepan, combine dark 

brown sugar, 1/4 cup of the butter 

and the 2 tablespoons of 

evaporated milk. Stir over low 

heat just until butter is melted. 

Pour into ungreased 8 inch 

square baking pan and sprinkle 

evenly with pecans. 

Cream light brown sugar and 

remaining butter. Add eggs. Stir 

in flour, vanilla and salt until 

moistened. Spread over pecans. 

Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 

minutes or until brownies test 

done. Cool in pan for 5 minutes, 

then invert on serving plate. 

Cool slightly before cutting. 

Makes 16 brownies. (I don’t 

mess with light or dark brown 

sugar – one type for all is fine.-

1/8 teaspoon garlic salt 

Dash of pepper 

1/4 cup cream style cottage 

cheese 

2 ounces cream cheese, softened 

1 tablespoon thinly sliced green 

onion 

1 tablespoon chopped green 

pepper 

1 tablespoon sour cream 

1 tablespoon grated Parmesan 

cheese 

Cook noodles according to 

package directions 

Meanwhile, in large skillet 

cook beef and onion until meat 

is no longer pink. Drain. 

Remove pan from heat and stir 

in tomato sauce, sugar, salt, 

garlic salt and pepper. In a 

small bowl, combine cottage 

cheese, cream cheese, green 

onion, green pepper and sour 

cream. 

Drain noodles and place half 

of them in greased 1 quart baking 

dish. Spoon half of beef mixture 

over top. Layer with cottage 

cheese mixture and then 

top with remaining noodles. Top 

with remaining beef mixture 

and sprinkle with Parmesan. 

Cover and bake at 350 

degrees for 20-25 minutes or 

until heated through and bubbly.

Now that pork is so reasonable, 

I keep trying to 

find an easy and good recipe 

for pulled pork (something I 

had never made). This one 

will work for me. I tried to 

make it without a recipe 

and really did some overcooking 

of everything. This 

recipe is so easy you can 

make a big batch and freeze 

some for another meal too: 

BARBECUED 

PORK SANDWICHES

1 boneless pork shoulder butt 

roast, about 3 pounds 

1 medium onion, chopped 

1 tablespoon butter 

1 (15 ounce) can tomato puree 

1/2 cup packed brown sugar 

1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce 

2 tablespoons lemon juice 


10 hard rolls, split 

Place pork on rack in roasting 

pan and bake, uncovered, at 

350 degrees for 2 hours or until 

tender. 

In Dutch oven, saute onion in 

butter until tender. Stir in 

tomato puree, brown sugar, 

Worcestershire sauce, lemon 

juice and salt. Bring to a boil, 

then reduce heat and simmer, 

uncovered, for 30 minutes. 

Shred pork and add to the 

sauce. Heat through. Serve on 

buns. (Use crock pot to keep 

pork mixture hot for easy second 

servings.)

Deb's retirement 

I was 8 in 1973. The time 

since then has seemed almost a 

lifetime because, for me, it 

almost is. It is amazing to think 

that for one person that same 

chunk of time has been a career. 

My sister is Deb Waterworth. 

She is one of the kindest, and 

most giving people I know. She 

is the same person who attended 

the first week of kindergarten 

with me because I was 

scared. She has always watched 

out for her brothers and family 

and put herself somewhere in 

the middle of the pack when it 

came to dispensing her own 

time. Today, she will come first 

as she retires from her position 

with Pennington County 

Human Services. 

Deb Waterworth interned at 

the then Pennington County 

Welfare Office in 1972, and 

loved it. She wanted to be a part 

of the efforts in which the small 

staff of 10 people were engaged. 

Her first day of work was Nov. 5, 

1973. This was the same time 

most folks were watching “The 

Waltons” and wondering what 

the Watergate trial involved. 

The Vietnam War was coming to 

an end and Minnesota saw its 

first Laotian refugees. Deb told 

me that one family she assisted 

had only one member who could 

speak a little English and she 

was 3 years old. The little girl 

had learned English at a 

refugee camp. You couldn’t ask a 

child to do that today and there 

are now interpreters to assist. 

Deb said it was culture shock for 

both she and the Laotian 

refugees, but they were kind, 

gentle people, and between 

them, they made things work. 

Deb became financial assistance 

supervisor in July 1985, a 

position that amplified her 

strengths as a good person. It is

The comments published in this column are intended to stimulate 

thinking and discussion among our readers. They are written 

by independent columnists and do not represent the opinion

Deb’s compassion that is her 

strong suit; that is how she 

makes things work. She has 

always dealt with surprises - 

some tragic - through personal 

compassion. She understands 

what it is like to be the other 

guy. I suspect much of the good 

she does is in listening to hardtime 

stories, then trying the 

best to make assistance programs 

fit the situation. Deb told 

me she knows people make 

judgments about the welfare 

system (me included) but that 

she is very proud of her body of 

work. Deb had a few adventures 

along the way, including assisting 

victims of Crookston flooding 

in the mid-’70s and later in 

Grand Forks, N.D., on-site with 

applications for assistance. 

If ever anyone deserves to be 

on the receiving end of “you 

have been a good and faithful 

servant,” it is my sister Deb. 

She can now enjoy her retirement 

and life on her own schedule. 

Her husband, Mike, works 

at Digi-Key and son, Reed, is 

employed at Raytheon in 

Marlborough, Mass., so they 

will be out of her way while she 

spends time with her three terriers 

and one labradoodle. Deb 

has always valued her family 

and plans to spend more time 

with them; although, her phone 

calls can be long and visits too 

spontaneous, so I will still 

require prior notification to any 

visits. I still like to hassle my 

sister and couldn’t have a column 

about her be too laudatory 

without a little sarcasm to balance 

all the sweetness. 

By the time you read this, 

Deb’s retirement party will be 

finished. Empty cups, paper 

plates and plastic sporks will 

mark the end of Deb’s day and 

her days at the place she tried to 

make a difference for almost 

four decades. Have a good 

retirement Deb.

Fire burns 130 

acres Monday in 

Polk County 

Fire burned about 80 acres of 

unharvested corn and about 50 

acres of Conservation Reserve 

Program land in Polk County on 

Monday afternoon. No injuries 

were reported. 

The Warren Fire Department 

was dispatched to Section 28 of 

Helgeland Township, southeast 

of Warren, at about 4:30 p.m. 

Monday. Fire Chief Rodney 

Jorgenson said the department 

needed additional water and 

called for mutual aid from the 

Thief River Falls, Viking and 

Alvarado fire departments. 

Warren firefighters were on the 

scene for about four-and-a-half 

hours. 

The fire burned property 

individually owned by Damon 

Stroble, Don Diedrich and Jerry 

Jevning. Jorgenson said the fire 

remains under investigation, 

but he said the fire was possibly 

caused by a nearby burning 

garbage pile. 

Jorgenson reminded the public

Wednesday when Fond du Lac 

arrived in Thief River Falls for a 

Minnesota College Athletic 

Conference volleyball match. 

Best hope for the win-starved 

Thunder to return home with an 

upset was to catch the Pioneers 

napping. That didn’t happen. 

Northland took care of business 

with a 60-minute 25-16, 25-15, 

25-4 sweep. 

The win improved the 

Pioneers to 5-2 in the Northern 

Division and 13-4 overall. 

Central Lakes took over the 

division lead that same night 

with a 20-25, 27-25, 25-15, 25-19 

win over Itasca that put the 

Raiders at 7-0 and Vikings at 6-

The Pioneers had a 10-5 settwo 

lead on a Brittni Wellen ace. 

A Thunder mis-hit accounted for 

a 20-12 score and a cross-court 

kill by Britta Glass tacked on 

the final point. 

It was all-Northland in th 

third set after Ashley Lindgren 

and Spong combined on a block 

that made it 10-2. 

“We expected better,” said 

Northland coach Abdul 

Chamma about Wednesday’s 

foe, “but our girls came out and 

played well. We maybe started 

out a little slow, and we gave up 

a few points in the second set, 

but we talked to the kids during 

the break and told them to just 

go out and play their game – 

relax, communicate and have 

fun.”

Heart O’ Lakes Conference expanding 

Reports have surfaced that 

Fergus Falls and Barnesville 

will join the Heart O’ Lakes 

Conference high school football 

line-up in either 2013 or 2014. 

Frank Fee of KROX Radio in 

Crookston wrote that the conference 

has voted yes to the applications 

by the Otters and 

Trojans. 

The additions will give the 

conference two eight-team divisions. 

Fergus Falls will be added to 

the Heart O’ Lakes North with 

Detroit Lakes, Perham, East 

Grand Forks, Thief River Falls, 

Crookston and Pequot Lakes. 

Barnesville will join Hawley, 

Pelican Rapids, Roseau, 

Warroad, Dilworth-Glyndon- 

Felton, Staples-Motley and 

Breckenridge in the Heart O’ 

Lakes Conference Classic 

Division. 

Fee said teams will play the 

other seven teams in their division, 

then cross over to play one 

opponent in the other division to 

complete an eight-game regular 

season schedule.

about Alzheimer’s. 

Alzheimer’s does not only affect 

the person with the disease, but 

the lives of entire families. To 

unite and focus on the goals for 

this community, we’ve established 

a goal of a world without 

Alzheimer’s. This is truly an 

amazing and emotional journey.

I definitely second the above 

statement from my sister. As I 

stood in front of many of our 

family and friends at the 

Warroad Walk to End 

Alzheimer’s on Saturday, Sept. 

15 at The Warroad Senior 

Living Center, and shared our 

story, it brought out an overwhelming 

flood of emotions. Our 

mom is the reason that Jill and 

I do what we do and have the 

drive and the passion to help 

and educate others. We do this 

in her honor and her memory. 

Warroad is one of the 14 

walks to be hosted this year by 

the Alzheimer’s Association, 

Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter 

and is the smallest community 

in the chapter. The 462 registered 

walkers and 25 teams 

enjoyed a beautiful day. 

In 2011, 71 walks out of the 

640 nationwide were considered 

“rural”; the Warroad Walk 

ranked fourth, and raised over 

$31,000. With the increase in 

funds raised this year to over 

$33,000, Warroad has a chance 

of being first in our nation of all 

“small town” walks.

The Warroad Walk is a significant 

experience for all participants. 

During the walk, participants 

learn about Alzheimer’s 

disease and how to get involved 

with advocacy, research and 

clinical trial enrollments, as 

well as support programs and 

services. 

Those at the Warroad Walk 

were also able to raise funds by 

participating in a silent auction, 

theme baskets, and candy bar 

and quilt raffles. There was also 

the balloon ceremony, the 

Promise Garden and live music 

by Harmony Fire. All participants 

received a flower that was 

“planted” in the Promise 

Garden during the actual walk. 

The color of the flower depicted 

the person they honored; purple 

for those that have lost a loved 

one to Alzheimer’s or a related 

dementia, yellow for those who 

are caregivers, rainbow for 

those who are afflicted with the 

disease and orange for those 

who support the cause. 

“I got goosebumps on my 

arms and tears in my eyes seeing 

the Promise Garden flowers 

rise to show all the people’s lives 

that have been affected by 

Alzheimer’s,” said Rebecca 

Erdman of Roseau.

Shortly after 9-11 and for several years 

after, the fervor of patriotism in the country 

was palpable - you could almost touch it. 

You could certainly feel the emotion when 

the flag passed by during a parade and 

everyone stood, and removed their hats in 

solemn respect. 

Last week, a local veteran complained to 

a businessperson in the community that 

while attending a parade, he witnessed 

many people stay seated, talking and or 

eating while the flag passed in procession. 

Apparently, the patriotic fervor that swept 

the country after 9-11 has diminished in its 

intensity. It was an emotional moment for 

this veteran and he choked on the words. 

The flag means a great deal to many people, 

and it means a great deal more to this 

veteran. We may not even be able to comprehend 

what it means to him, but in “I am 

the Flag,” Ruth Apperson Rous reminds us 

that the red stripes proclaim the fearless 

courage and integrity of American men and 

boys and the self-sacrifice and devotion of 

American mothers and daughters; the 

white stripes stand for liberty and equality 

for all; the blue is the blue of heaven, loyalty, 

and faith. 

The American flag represents many 

things including the eternal principles of 

liberty, justice, and humanity. So when carried 

in a procession, or when it is hoisted or 

lowered, please face the flag and salute. 

Citizens not in uniform should salute by 

placing their right hand over the heart and 

men with head cover should remove it and 

hold it to left shoulder, hand over the heart. 

The American flag should mean a great 

deal to citizens of this country. As Rous says 

in her poem, “I embody American freedom: 

freedom of speech, religion, assembly, the 

press, and the sanctity of the home.”

CLIMB Theatre is bringing

Ideas for Mind and Body. For 

over 35 years, CLIMB Theatre 

has brought quality character 

education programming into 

schools and other educational 

settings. Its mission is to create 

and perform plays, classes, and 

other works that inspire and 

propel young people toward 

actions that benefit themselves, 

each other, and the community. 

CLIMB's programming is available 

in a variety of formats, 

including plays, interactive 

classroom activities, and professional 

development workshops 

for students and administrators. 

“Our programs reached nearly 

450,000 students in past 

years,” reports Peg Wetli, 

founder of CLIMB. “I believe 

the quality of our programming 

is the best it’s ever been.” 

Given the serious consequences 

that arise when a 

‘school bullying’ situation exists, 

more schools are seeking outside 

programming to teach 

appropriate techniques to students 

regarding how to deal 

with bullying and harassment 

in and outside the classroom. 

During the 2007-2008 school 

year, CLIMB Theatre presented 

bullying prevention programs in 

Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, 

Illinois, Montana, North 

Dakota, and South Dakota. 

Students learn that kids who 

bully can be any size, come from 

any background, and girls can 

bully, too. 

“We want students to understand 

ways to NOT give their 

power over to kids who bully,” 

says Buffy Sedlachek, producer 

at CLIMB. “Through theatre, 

students learn how to effectively 

take a stand against bullying 

and they also learn that 

bystanders can have a big 

impact on creating bully-free 

schools.”


Two people injured 

in accident Tuesday 

Two people, including a 

Minnesota State Patrol trooper, 

were injured after an accident 

Tuesday night in Polk County. 

Virgil P. Benoit, 69, Red Lake 

Falls, was taken to Altru 

Hospital in Grand Forks, N.D., 

with non-life threatening 

injuries, according to the 

Minnesota State Patrol report. 

An Altru nursing supervisor 

said Benoit was listed in satisfactory 

condition there Friday 

morning. 

Trooper Dean R. Smith, 47, 

Thief River Falls, suffered a 

minor injury and went to 

RiverView Hospital in 

Crookston. 

At the time of the accident, 

Smith was driving a 2009 Chevy 

Tahoe westbound on U.S. 

Highway 2. He turned the 

squad into the median turnaround 

to pursue a speeding 

vehicle in an eastbound lane of 

Highway 2. After he turned onto 

Highway 2, his squad was rearended 

by Benoit’s 2012 Mazda 3. 

After the crash, Benoit’s car left 

the highway to the right and 

rolled. No alcohol was involved. 

Both drivers were wearing their 

seat belts. Benoit’s car was 

totalled, and the squad sustained 

moderate damage.

Police Department, Minnesota 

Department of Natural 

Resources Enforcement Division 

of St. Paul and Polk County 

Sheriff’s Office were dispatched 

to the scene at 7:51 p.m. 

Tuesday. The accident remains 

under investigation. 

Warroad man continues fight for property 


because he is a peaceful, lawbiding 

citizen. But that doesn’t 

mean he will stop fighting for 

what he believes is rightfully his 

family’s land. 

“We’re going to continue 

fighting for what is ours,” 

Kakaygeesick said. “It’s been 

our property since Teddy 

Roosevelt gave it to us.” 

In 1905, President Theodore 

Roosevelt signed a land patent 

allotting Kakaygeesick Bay to 

Kakaygeesick’s great-grandfather 

Chief Everlasting Sky. A 

2005 Minnesota Public Radio 

article states that the federal 

government wanted the Ojibwe 

living in the Warroad area to 

move to either the Red Lake or 

White Earth reservations. 

Those who refused to move were 

granted land, but they were no 

longer recognized as American 

Indians. 

Kakaygeesick said the Red 

Lake Tribe made its initial purchase 

offer shortly after his 

father’s death in 1998. 

“They took us out for dinner 

and told us that they were interested 

in buying our property,” 

Kakaygeesick said. “We told 

them it was not for sale. 

Everyone enjoys living on the 

property – it’s tax free. My 

grandfather had lived on the 

property since 1905.” 

Kakaygeesick said Red Lake 

claimed that the property was 

entrusted to them, by the U.S. 

Government, when they made 

their initial purchase offer. 

Kakaygeesick begged to differ. 

He said the original land patent, 

that had been signed by 

Roosevelt, entrusted it to 

Everlasting Sky after 25 years. 

Everlasting Sky died in 1968. 

Kakaygeesick said his greatgrandfather’s 

last will and testament 

originally gave the land 

to his father. He said the will 

was changed at some point to 

give the land to Mary Angus, 

Everlasting Sky’s oldest daughter. 

Kakaygeesick’s cousins, who 

inherited the land from Angus 

but had almost no connection to 

it, agreed to sell the land to the 

Red Lake Tribe for the sum of $1 

million. 

Kakaygeesick says the sale is 

a fraud because it wasn’t his 

cousins’ land to sell. Copies of 

Mary Angus’ last will and testament 

were introduced during a 

probate hearing in 

International Falls. The showed 

that the property went to 

Kakaygeesick’s father. 

Angus’ original will could not 

be located. The copies were 

deemed to be insufficient evidence 

and Red Lake Band’s purchase 

of the property was 

upheld. 

Kakaygeesick said that he 

described what had happened at 

the probate hearing to Bureau 

of Indian Affairs attorney 

Marrianna Roca Shulstad. She 

said the two copies of the will, 

that had been introduced at the 

hearing, should have been recognized 

as being legally valid. 

Due to a lack of funds, the 

Kakaygeesicks were without 

legal representation at the probate 

hearing. They had previously 

worked with the Leonard, 

Street and Deinard law firm of 

Minneapolis, who had been 

unable to locate any documentation 

that would tie the land to 

Kakaygeesick’s father. 

Kakaygeesick now feels there 

was definite fraud involved. 

“We were ignorant as far as 

knowledge,” Kakaygeesick said. 

“If we would have had our attorneys 

there, it would probably be 

a different story and we wouldn’t 

be getting kicked out.” 

Kakaygeesick added that he 

would like to see an investigation 

by the U.S. Department of 

Justice, or even Congress. He 

has sent information on his case 

to President Barack Obama, 

noting that the land was given 

to them by a president and may 

take the president for them to 

get it back.

over mail-in balloting 


and 90 percent of Marshall 

county precincts (55 of 61) rely 

on absentee-balloting by mail.

Commissioner Betty Younggren 

echoed Bouvette’s concerns citing 

the “tremendous costs” to 

Kittson and Marshall counties 

to pay for this infrastructure 

should the amendment pass.” 

Elections officials around the 

state and the Secretary of 

State’s office have calculated the 

amendment to cost anywhere 

from $30 to over $50 million for 

state and local governments to 

implement. In Kittson county 

alone – with roughly 2,800 eligible 

voters – the 

GreaterMNCounts.org report 

has estimated costs at $250 per 

Kittson county voter. 

Stumpf said he is also 

alarmed at the estimated costs 

to rural municipalities if the 

amendment were to pass. 

“These are costs our rural taxpayers 

and local governments 

can’t bear. Anything put in 

statute can be changed. But if 

it’s locked into the state constitution, 

we can’t fix any resulting 

problems.”

“I can’t see mail-in balloting 

working if this amendment 

passes. If you’re mailing 

your ballot in, you can’t show a 

photo ID.” 

Minnesota towns and municipalities 

with fewer than 400 

registered voters currently can 

conduct elections via mail. Most 

have no infrastructure – including 

accessible polling locations, 

trained election judges and 

equipment – to process in-person 

balloting. Due to specific 

language contained in the constitutional 

amendment requiring 

“substantially-equivalent 

identity and eligibility verification,” 

the current process of 

mail-in balloting would have to 

change because voters don’t vote 

in person where they could actually 

show photo identification. 

Bouvette chided the state legislators 

back in St. Paul who 

placed the amendment on the 

ballot. “I think they forgot about 

us again up here in northwestern 

Minnesota. This amendment 

is just costly and wrong for 

our state.” 

Kakaygeesick also questions 

how Red Lake can build a casino 

on the property, which has been 

rumored. He cites the Indian 

Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988, 

which prohibits Indian gaming 

on lands acquired after Oct. 17, 

1988.

said. Hauf has also written 

some historical romance pieces. 

She said she likes the romance 

genre but likes having weird 

creatures in her stories. Under 

the pseudonym Alex Archer, 

Hauf also writes action/adventure 

books without any romance 

thrown into the mix. 

Hauf usually has more than 

one story in progress and sometimes 

as many as three or four. 

She flits between them while 

writing each day. She said, on

Running for Your Fight 

In January, Converse’s father 

Jeff Burkland was diagnosed 

with lung cancer. The cancer is 

treatable and Burkland is in the 

midst of at least a year’s worth 

of treatment. 

Burkland is now nine months 

into his fight with lung cancer. 

He underwent six months of 

chemotherapy, had a portion of 

his left lung removed and is currently 

undergoing an additional 

six months of treatment. 

“It takes a lot out of him, but 

he is doing well,” Converse said.

Westaker Free Lutheran Church 

to celebrate 125 years 

Westaker Free Lutheran 

Church of Newfolden will celebrate 

125 years on Sunday, 

Sept. 30. 

Vest Aker congregation was 

organized at the Soren Sorenson 

home on Feb. 13, 1887 in section 

20 of New Folden Township. The 

church was named after Vest 

Aker, Norway, which later 

became Oslo, and was the home 

of Soren Sorenson before his 

immigration to America. 

The original affiliation of Vest 

Aker Church of rural Newfolden 

was with the Norwegian-Danish 

Evangelical Lutheran Church of 

America, a church body that 

existed from 1870 to 1890. Rev. 

Elias Aas, a pastor at St. 

Hilaire, was the first clergyman 

to serve Vest Aker. Later affiliation 

was with the Lutheran Free 

Church, a Lutheran body in 

America from 1897 to 1963. 

When the congregation transitioned 

from Norwegian to 

English, the name became 

Westaker, with a more English 

spelling and pronunciation. In 

1962, Westaker became a charter 

member of the Association of 

Free Lutheran Congregations. 

Now, 125 years after its birth, 

Westaker remains a Lutheran 

congregation in the community 

of Newfolden. “From Generation 

to Generation, Thou Art God” is 

the theme chosen for this 125th 

anniversary celebration. Pastor 

Bob Lee, a student pastor at 

Westaker in 1963, and past 

president of the Association of 

Free Lutheran Congregations, 

will speak at the 10:30 a.m. 

service. A dinner will be served 

at noon and the anniversary celebration 

service, with a history 

presentation, special music and 

greetings from former pastors 

will begin at 3 p.m. The congregation

months to write an 80,000-word 

book. 

Once she is finished with a 

manuscript, it goes through two 

edits. The first edit, called a 

copy edit, involves a copy editor 

and an editor reading through 

the manuscript. They suggest 

some changes, and then Hauf 

has an opportunity to approve 

those changes and add her own. 

From there, the manuscript 

becomes a galley, meaning it 

looks more like the finished 

product, and that’s the final 

opportunity to say something is 

wrong or needs to be changed. It 

takes about seven to eight 

months before a book makes it 

through the entire process. It’s 

less for short stories. 

With her father battling for 

his life, Converse chose to enter 

her own battle by competing in 

the 2012 Fargo Marathon. 

Running wasn’t something 

Converse would have turned to 

more than a few years ago. She 

began running in January 2008. 

Keri Anderson, a co-worker in 

Sanford’s rehabilitation department, 

asked her if she was 

interested in running a 

marathon. Converse had absolutly 

no interest in running a 

marathon but she allowed herself 

to be persuaded by 

Anderson to start running as 

Anderson’s training partner. 

Over the next three years, 

Converse ran in a variety of 

races ranging from 5K to half 

marathon. Her father’s battle 

with cancer was the right motivation 

for her to try her hand at 

the full 26.2-mile marathon. 

Converse began building up 

mileage to ready herself for the 

marathon. To make sure she 

could handle the marathon’s 

grueling distance, Converse 

completed a 30-mile training 

run five weeks before the Fargo 

Marathon. (She later ran another 

30 miles to celebrate her 30th 

birthday in June.) 

On May 19, Converse completed 

her first marathon in 

Fargo, N.D. Running with 

Converse was Kandy Efta, who 

also accompanied Converse on 

some of her longer training 

runs. “She was very supportive,” 

Converse said.

has become a big supporter of 

the American Cancer Society. 

Last year, she was one of the 

instructors who led a 

Zumbathon in St. Hilaire that 

was a Relay for Life fundraiser. 

Earlier this year, Converse 

walked in the Relay for Life 

with her father; and during the 

event, she taught a Zumba class 

that benefitted Relay for Life. 

Efta, who was one of the participants 

in the class, suggested 

that she lead a Zumbathon as a 

benefit for her father. 

“I was at first going to do it as 

a fundraiser for my dad,” 

Converse said. “He suggested 

that we do it for ACS.” 

After Converse put the word 

out about the Zumbathon, other 

people responded with stories 

that were similar to her father’s 

story. “That’s when we decided it 

should be for everyone,” 

Converse said.
