WIC clinics to be held this month
The Women, Infants and
Children’s Supplemental
Nutrition Education
Program is being held this
month.
Infants, children up to the
age of 5, and women who are
pregnant or breastfeeding
may be eligible for the program.
Organizers are interested
in enrolling pregnant
women in the program. They
feel that the prenatal nutrition
is a vital part of producing
a healthy baby.
Therefore, it is important to
apply for WIC early in your
pregnancy. They need no
proof of pregnancy.
All potential clients must
contact the WIC Program to
schedule an appointment.
“Free” medical alert
scam causing concern
A month or so ago, the “grandchild in
peril” scam was going around. In that
scam, someone calls posing as one of
your grandchildren and say they’re in
trouble - usually in a foreign country -
and in need of money. They usually ask
that you don’t call their parents
because it’s embarrassing. They’re
pretty convincing. They’re so convincing
that many people, including a resident
or two from this area, have fallen
for the scam. Now, the Minnesota
Attorney General’s Office says it’s seeing
a lot of activity regarding medical
alert scams.
In the “free” medical alert scam, the
scammers claim they are with
Medicare or a familiar medical
provider, or tell the recipient that their
“free” medical alert system is ready for
pickup if they “press one.” Once you
press a button, however, you will begin
to receive more unwanted calls and
requests to convince you to disclose
your personal information. The scammers
scare and defraud people into disclosing
their private information. They
then use this information to commit
identity theft or drain bank accounts.
The Minnesota attorney general,
Lori Swanson, says that if you’re in
doubt, if you’re not sure who you’re
dealing with, don’t give out any personal
information.
I would also like to offer to
Minnesotans, who tend to be trusting
and polite, there’s no rule or law that
says you have to be polite. Hang up!
Right in the middle of their little
speech - hang up! It’s that simple. If
they persist, call law enforcement.
letters signed in print and will not withhold names of writers
from publication.
Responses Invited: Letters critical of individuals or
other entities may be shown to those individuals or representatives
of those entities in advance of publication with an invitation
by newspaper staff for response in the same issue as the
original letter.
Corrections: If an error is made in news or advertising
publication, the staff encourages readers to call it to our immediate
attention by calling 681-4450. We will attempt to correct
the error or clarify the misunderstanding in the next issue.
Roseau man sentenced for operating
continuing criminal enterprise
A Roseau man was sentenced
running a drug trafficking
organization that brought
and ecstasy from the Twin
Cities to various cities,
Assistant U.S. Attorney
Lynn Jordheim. Bergland
pled guilty to the charges on
July 10, 2012.
U.S. District Judge Ralph
R. Erickson sentenced
Bergland to 10 years in
prison to be followed by
Deadline to report planted and
prevented planted acres to FSA nears
The Pennington County
Farm Service Agency
reminds area producers that
the deadline to report their
acres to FSA, including prevented
planting acres, is
July 15.
Prevented planting
claims filed after July 15
require that the producer
pay a fee for the FSA County
Office to perform a field visit
to verify the eligible disaster
condition which prevented
the crop from being planted.
If, at the time of the field
visit the eligible disaster
condition cannot be verified,
the prevented planting
claim would be disapproved.
Area producers are also
reminded that annual
acreage reports are required
to be filed with FSA in order
to be eligible to receive payments
for DCP/ACRE, CRP,
LDP’s, commodity loans,
SURE, NAP, etc.
Due to budget constraints,
the county office is
no longer able to mail out
maps to producers for
acreage reporting. When
Alexandria, as well as the
following areas of North
Dakota: Fargo, Grand Forks
and Williston.
To date, 30 defendants
have been charged as part of
this investigation on drug
conspiracy and money laundering
charges. Additional
defendants who have been
sentenced in this case
include the following people
who also have known ties to
northwest Minnesota:
• Jacob Brian Skadsem,
Fargo, N.D., was sentenced
on charges of conspiracy to
distribute controlled substances
and money laundering
conspiracy. He was sentenced
to six years and two
months in prison.
• Andrew Frank
Przekwas, Roseau, was sentenced
on charges of conspiracy
to distribute controlled
substances and money laundering
conspiracy. He was
sentenced to 48 months in
prison.
• Rachel Renee Dahl,
Roseau, was sentenced on a
charge of conspiracy to distribute
controlled substances.
She was sentenced
to 38 months in prison.
Operation Noah’s Ark was
an investigation led by
Homeland Security Investi -
gations, Internal Revenue
Service – Criminal Investi -
gation, North Dakota
Bureau of Criminal Investi -
gations and the Grand Forks
Police Department. Assist -
ing agencies were the Drug
Enforce-ment Adminis -
tration – Fargo Resident
Office, Minnesota Bureau of
Criminal Apprehension, and
North Dakota Parole and
Probation.
“This investigation is a
terrific example of how federal,
state and local law
enforcement were able to
work closely together to successfully
dismantle a major
narcotics smuggling organization,”
said Michael
Feinberg, special agent in
charge of HSI St. Paul,
which covers North Dakota.
“HSI will continue to utilize
its broad authorities to target
those individuals that
pose direct threats to our
communities.”
Kelly R. Jackson, IRS-CI
special agent in charge in
the St. Paul Field Office,
said, “The role of Internal
Revenue Service Criminal
Investigation in narcotics
investigations is to follow
the money, so we can financially
disrupt and dismantle
major drug trafficking
organizations such as
Operation Noah’s Ark.
Today's sentencing of Noah
Bergland and previously
sentenced co-conspirators
again emphasizes that the
IRS-CI and the U.S.
Attorney’s office will continue
their aggressive pursuit
of those who launder illegal
drug profits. IRS-CI is committed
to unraveling complex
financial transactions
and money laundering
schemes where individuals
attempt to conceal the true
source of their money.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney
Chris Myers prosecuted the
cases.
producers signed up for
DCP, they are furnished
acreage reporting maps at
that time.
Producers who haven’t
signed up for DCP, Aug. 2 is
the deadline to enroll in
DCP. Producers are encouraged
to sign up as soon as
possible, so they will have
their maps completed when
they come into to report
their acres. Producers who
would like to get their maps
now, but are not ready to
sign-up for DCP, should contact
the county office so their
maps can be printed and
available for them to stop by
the office and pick up.
To better serve producers,
the county office prefers to
conduct acreage reporting by
appointments so producers
can be served in a timely
manner and the staff can
have all of the producer’s
records available when a
producer comes in for his or
her appointment. The county
office does take walk-ins
for acreage reporting, but
producers with appointments
will be assisted first.
Once producers have completed
their maps, they
should call the county office
to schedule an appointment.
A letter attached to the map
explains how to complete the
map and what information
is needed on the map. This
information includes the
crop, variety, planting date,
intended use and other
important information.
Producers with crop
insurance are encouraged to
report their acres to FSA
first since the planted acres
reported to FSA and crop
insurance need to be reconciled.
FSA will then provide
producers with a copy of
their acreage report and
maps, so they can provide
this information to their
crop insurance agent.
Producers with questions
about acreage reporting
requirements or prevented
planting, should contact
their local FSA County
Office or the Pennington
County FSA Office at 218-
681-1612 ext. 2.
