Prowlers, Pirates S.D. bound
n Weather moves baseball opener to Huron
Long-time athletic rivals
Thief River Falls and
Crookston will add a new
twist to their competition
when they head to South
Dakota in an effort to jumpstart
a delayed 2013 high
school baseball schedule
with a doubleheader in
Huron Tuesday.
Like most teams, the
Prowlers and Pirates have
been confined to indoor work
since opening practice
March 18 due to a prolonged
stretch of winter-like weather.
Thief River Falls had an
April 5 debut against
Northern Freeze in Karlstad
called off, and it was obvious
that the Prowlers’ April 9
home opener vs. Roseau
wasn’t going to happen,
either.
Crookston was in the
same boat, calling off games
with Red Lake County and
Badger/Greenbush-Middle
River due to weather and
field conditions.
Saying enough is enough,
the Prowlers and Pirates
decided to look for greener
pastures. Crookston coach
Ted Hasz presented the idea
of a combined effort in an
attempt to get the season
started, and Thief River
Falls’ Courtney Skjerven
was quickly on board.
“Ted Hasz called and
asked if we wanted to split a
bus and go down to Huron to
play,” explained Skjerven.
“We needed to do something
to give the guys something
to practice for. It doesn’t look
like we will be playing here
for a while, and this has
really kept the kids motivated.”
Skjerven, in his fourth
year as the Prowlers’ head
coach, is looking to build off
a 14-7 season in 2012 when
there were just two seniors
on the roster. “I feel we are
as deep and experienced as
we have been in my years as
a head coach,” he said. “We
have varsity experience at
all positions.”
In contrast to last spring,
there are nine seniors on
hand this year, along with
ten juniors.
The seniors include Nick
Hoffard, Grady Pederson,
Brady Brooks, Jared
Schaefer, Sam Matter, Evan
Dondelinger, Holden Nelson,
Wyatt Wheeler and Chris
Carillo. The juniors are
Brody Merrill, John
Wilebski, Landon Sanders,
Turner Storm, Aaron Rima,
Jacob Leier, Wade Simpson,
Wyatt Nelson, Peter
Samuelson and Ian Lund.
Others in the program are
sophomores Chris Sanders,
Lucas Sandsmark, Austin
Audette, McLain Stennes
and Keaton Huot; plus
freshmen Kade Nelson,
Lucas Magnusson, Chase
Myhrer, Ethan Halvorson,
Brendan Vigen, Riley
Bakken, Gabe Peterson,
Wyatt Ortloff, Carsen Retka,
Benji Wilebski, Bryce
Chapin, Josh Rand, Tyrus
Olson, Devin Westerlund
and Aaron Berzinski.
Skjerven likes his team’s
offensive potential. “I think
once we get going and get
use to live pitching, we
should have a nice hitting
club,” he noted. “Holden
(Nelson), Wyatt (Wheeler),
Landon (Sanders) and
Turner (Storm) have been
big parts of our line-up in
the past. I look for nice years
out of some of our other seniors,
and Ian Lund is a big,
strong kid who has been
swinging the bat well
indoors.”
Experience also produces
confidence in the field,
according to Skjerven, who
said, “We should be solid
defensively.”
In Pederson, Schaefer
and Samuelson, the
Prowlers have three players
with experience at first base.
Storm returns at second;
Hoffard and Brooks are both
quality shortstops; Lund is
penciled in at third, where
Weight room testing
is completed at LHS
Lincoln High School
weight room testing has
been completed for the third
quarter, with names being
added to the program’s
honor roll. Jeff Mumm,
strength training & speed,
agility & quickness coordinator
oversees the tests.
Rima is also expected to get
some playing time; and
Leier has the athletic ability
to play all four infield positions.
“We have a lot of guys
who can play outfield,”
pointed out Skjerven. That
group is headed by Wheeler
and Holden Nelson, who will
be four-year starters.
Dondelinger and Matter
have also played a lot of outfield
in high school and
American Legion ball, and
Wyatt Nelson, Chris
Sanders and Simpson are
expected to vie for playing
time as well.
Landon and Chris
Sanders, along with John
Wilebski, are catchers.
Hoffard earned 2012 All-
Section 8AA honors as a
pitcher. Brooks is also a
front-line starter. Matter
and Holden Nelson have
pitching innings under their
belts as well.
Other pitching prospects
include Merrill, Landon
Sanders, Storm, Rima, Leier
and Chris Sanders.
“I am also excited about
the strength of our junior
varsity team,” said
Skjerven. “In years past, a
bunch of those guys would
be pushing for varsity time.
I feel like we have a nice,
solid team this spring, and
hopefully our depth will help
us out if we need to play a
bunch of games at the end of
the season due to the weather.”
Pioneers pick up win
(Continued from Page 8)
Minnesota West outfield
robbed Aubol of a line-drive
hit that would have put the
Pioneers back on top in the
eighth.
In the bottom of the
ninth, the winners put their
first three hitters on base. A
strike-out was followed by a
potential home-to-first double
play ball, but the throw
to the plate sailed to the
backstop to end the game.
It was a tough way to
lose, and it affected the
Pioneers’ Game 2 performance,
admitted Dowers. “We
really failed to respond after
blowing the lead in the first
game,” he said. “We didn’t
play with the fire that I
have become accustomed to
seeing from this group.”
The loss went to Jarad
Nelson (Karlstad). “Jarad
threw well most of the
game,” noted Dowers. “He
only walked two, but hit
four others and that was
just too many free base runners
for something bad not
to happen.”
“This was a very disappointing
doubleheader for
us,” stated Dowers. “These
are two games we should
have won. We just didn’t
play well enough in any
aspect of the game to win.
We didn’t play bad...we just
didn’t play up to our level.”
