up with a four-run fourth
inning. Alex Bororwicz
(Strandquist), Cole Larson
(Red Lake Falls) and Matt
Noerhing (Lakeville) drove
in two runs each.
“Janzen threw a very
good game,” reported
Northland coach Barry
Dowers. “After giving up five
runs – all with two out – in
the second inning, he took
over. He gave up four hits
that second inning, but only
one was hit hard. It would
have been easy for him to
fold after a run of bad luck
like that, but he showed why
he is our ace and really shut
them down.”
Four strong innings by
second-game starter
Michael Kinzler (East
Grand Forks) proved instrumental
in the Game 2
Northland win for the
Friday sweep.
“Michael threw a great
game,” offered Dowers. “He
walked a few more guys
than we would like and went
deep into the count too often.
We are still building arm
strength in our pitchers, so
we pulled him after four
innings when his pitch count
got up to the limit we set for
him.”
The Northland offense
featured a 2-for-3 performance
by Cole Christianson
(Greenbush). “Cole hasn’t
played baseball in a few
years and has been knocking
the rust off,” explained
Dowers. “Today he was on
his game and hit everything
hard.”
Minnesota West scored
three times in the bottom of
the seventh to tie the game
and force extra innings in
the Saturday opener, then
won it with a run in the
ninth.
“We really let this one get
away from us,” acknowledged
Dowers. “Logan Lund
(Tolna, N.D.) pitched the
first 6 1/3 innings, but hit
his pitch limit. “Jeremy
Kasprowicz (Strandquist),
who saved a win for us the
day before, came in with two
on and one out, but had no
luck. The first three batters
he faced singled – our centerfielder
lost sight of one
and it fell in front of him,
and one was a bloop. Just
tough luck.”
A close play at the plate
on a strong throw from right
field by Joe Iverson
(Hitterdal) and a tag effort
by catcher Hunter Aubol
(East Grand Forks) couldn’t
keep the Bluejays from tying
the game.
