Today, there are 3.2 million Girl Scouts - 2.3 million girl members and 880,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers. Low believed that “all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually.” She helped establish a goal of “bringing girls out of isolated home environments and into community service and the open air where Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips, learned how to tell time by the stars, and studied first aid.” Times certainly have changed. While there may still be impediments or challenges facing girls today, they live in a much more open society, enjoying the hard work and dedication of predecessors, many of whom probably participated in Girl Scouts. In Girl Scouts, girls discover fun, friendship, and the power of girls. Not surprisingly, they have broken down barriers and changed the world. Today, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts, and its value to girls everywhere and our country. Girl Scouting is dedicated to helping girls develop their full individual potential, how they to relate to others with increasing understanding, skill and respect; how they develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and, Girl Scouts helps youth contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others. While we join Girl Scouts in celebrating their anniversary, we take great pleasure in knowing that Girl Scouts have announced that they have embarked on a journey to develop new strategies that will ensure its continued growth and development into the future. - DHill, editor credibility in letters signed in print and will not withhold names of writers from publication. TR F Gift Certificate Raffle 50/50 Cash Raffle The Lincoln High School Choral Department visited Friendship Village in Bloomington recently and sang with the facility’s choir. The activity was one of the activities included in the choir’s philanthropic effort called T.H.I.S. Watch for more events. T.H.I.S. movement sings with the elderly The Lincoln High School Choral Department is proud to be fulfilling various philanthropic efforts this school year. Their efforts this year include visiting various LifeCare and/or assisted living facilities. The choir made its first stop at an assisted living facility in Bloomington. Friendship Village has partnered up with the Lincoln High School choirs for the past two years. Each year, the choir makes a trip to the Metro area to perform at various facilities. The residents at Friendship Village are especially eager to have the choir visit them due to the fact that they to have a choir. The choir at the facility is called Sing For Your Life. The 90-plus Concert Choir and Swingsations members teamed up with the Sing For Your Life choir to perform for family and friends of the residents at Friendship Village. The choirs met for lunch and visited for the first hour and then proceeded to practice prior to the informal concert. The students visited with old and new friends that were at the facility. Some of the students remembered residents from the previous year and got caught up on what was going on in each other’s lives. The rehearsing took about 15 minutes, and before long, there was a nice family crowd gathered to hear the young and old sing together and celebrate life! There were many hugs and handshakes given out before the two-and-a-half hour visit was done. The choir had to promise to come back next year and to sing even more songs with the Sing For Your Life Choir. On the bus ride home, many of the students told of their personal stories of visiting with the residents. The young high school singers could not believe how grateful the residents were to have the choir in their home and how they simply loved the act of singing with the students. Many of the students said that they would probably be doing the same thing when they became that age. They even could see themselves in some of the residences due to their love of music. More performances The LHS Choir members will be making their way to Greenbush on March 20 to sing for and visit with the residents of the Greenbush LifeCare Center. They will also be setting a date to sing for and visit with the residents in the Thief River Care Center.
