Fertile-Beltrami went 22-for-49
(45 percent).
Both teams had trouble at
the free throw line, where the
Chargers were 11-for-22 and the
Falcons went 9-for-18.
One of those Fertile-Beltrami
free throw misses came 5:40
into the game when a Mitchell
Mosher shot came to rest on the
base of the rim against the backboard.
At the time, it was just a
chuckle-producing oddity. Little
did anyone know that it was
going to be the scoreboard difference
at the end.
It was a 30-30 stalemate on
the boards and Fertile-Beltrami
had one more turnover than
Goodridge/Grygla, 20-19.
The Falcons’ season ended at
20-8. The Chargers advanced
with a 19-10 record.
There was more excitement
to come in the nightcap that featured
Fosston 3-pointers to end
the first half and the game.
Seth Carlin’s trey with 1.8
seconds left sent the
Greyhounds into intermission
with a 31-25 lead. Cass Lake-
Bena pulled even on a Cody
Wind jumper from the lane that
made it 50-50 with 6:41 remaining.
The teams were never separated
by more than two points
the rest of the way until the
final shot.
A Wind 3-pointer from out
front gave the Panthers a 58-57
lead with 40.5 seconds to play.
Zach Sather scored off a
rebound for a 59-58 Fosston
edge with 21.3 seconds on the
clock.
Cass Lake-Bena tied it when
Caleb Fisher made the second of
a two-shot foul situation with
10.4 seconds showing.
On the final Fosston possession,
there was a scramble for a
tipped ball that ended up in the
hands of Arneson, who beat the
horn and the Panthers with his
unlikely game-winner.
Arneson and Carlin both
scored 20 points, with Taylor
Carlson adding 11. Wind finished
with 18 points and Jake
Ellis had 12 for the Panthers.
The 23-4 Greyhounds went
21-for-49 from the field (43 percent)
and cashed in on 16 of 21
free throw attempts. The
Panthers, who finished 25-4,
were a similar 23-for-51 from
the floor (45 percent), but they
picked up just seven points on
13 free throws.

Engelstad is a senior on the
men’s tennis team at the College
of St. Scholastica in Duluth.
Engelstad opened the 2012
season playing No. 1 singles and
No. 1 doubles for the Saints.

Swenson is first
Charger to reach
1,000-point mark
A second-year boys high
school basketball cooperative,
Goodridge/Grygla gained its
first 1,000-Point Club member
when 6-3 senior forward
Preston Swenson reached that
milestone in a Feb. 27 game
against Fosston.
Swenson had 994 points
going into the contest, which
was the second-to-the-last game
of the regular season. He
reached the scoring standard at
the free throw line, and the
occasion was celebrated by
Charger fans, who displayed
signs and donned special shirts
that observed the feat.
Before the two programs
merged, Swenson totaled 320
points as a freshman and sophomore
for the Goodridge Huskies.
“Preston’s a power player,”
said Goodridge/Grygla coach
Vern Johnson, who used to
coach against Swenson when he
directed the Grygla-Gatzke basketball
program. “He’s a strong
kid, but he can play in the post
or outside. He’ll hit the outside
shots, drive to the basket and
he’s strong inside.”
In addition to his all-conference
honors in basketball,
Swenson was an all-conference
football tight end and defensive
lineman the past two years.
He plans to attend Northland
Community and Technical
College this fall.

Senior Showcase Game and
sixth grade Future Stars Games
will be played Monday, March
26, at Red Lake Falls.
The Showcase contest, featuring
players from Clearbrook-
Gonvick, Goodridge/Grygla, Red
Lake County and East Grand
Forks Sacred Heart, is expected
to start about 8:15 p.m.
All-conference selections will
be announced at that time.
There will also be a 3-point
shootout, buzzer-beater competition,
a halftime half-court
shooting contest and a 50-50
drawing.
Concession stand will be
open.
Admission is $2 for adults
and $1 for students, with all
proceeds going back to the conference.
