Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at
Thief River Care Center in Thief
River Falls.
Funeral services will be held
at 2 p.m., Monday, March 19 at
First Lutheran Church, Middle
River, with Rev. Curtis Matz
officiating. Interment will follow
at Huntly Cemetery, rural
Middle River.
Visitation will be held on
Sunday, March 18, from 3 to 6
p.m., with a 5 p.m. prayer service
at First Lutheran Church,
Riders in the Sky Perform in TRF
The Grammy Award winning
quartet, Riders in the Sky, will
perform at the Lincoln High
School Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.
on Thursday, March 22. This is
a performance of the 2011-2012
Thief River Falls Entertainment
Series.
With 28-plus years and well
over 5,000 performances and
counting, Riders In The Sky will
present a program of some wellknown
cowboy songs, such as
“Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds,” “Cool
Water,” “Ghost Riders in the
Sky,” “Back in the Saddle
Again,” “Rawhide and Happy
Trails” to mention only a few.
Indeed, the Riders - Ranger
Doug (Idol of American Youth),
Woody Paul (King of the Bowboy
Fiddlers), Too Slim (a Righteous
Tater), and Joey (the Cow Polka
King) - have single-handedly
revived and revitalized an
Middle River. Visitation will
also be held one hour prior to
the funeral on Monday at the
church.

Thief River Falls - Alton
“AJ” “Shorty” Trahan, 72, died
on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at
his home in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services will be held
at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 20 at
Johnson Funeral Service in
Thief River Falls, with Father
Rick Lambert presiding.
Visitation will be held for two
hours prior to the funeral service.
Greenbush student
performs with UMM choir
The University of Minnesota,
Morris Concert Choir, under the
direction of Dr. Kenneth
Hodgson, begin their 2012 East
Coast tour on March 10, 2012.
Peter Wollin, Greenbush, will be
touring and performing with the
choir.
The tour culminates with a
home concert at 3 p.m. on
Sunday, March 25, 2012, in

Ornithologist’s Union in
Minneapolis awarded a $1,100
grant to Agassiz Audubon
Society in Warren to support
their new "Community Nest
Watch" project.
“The grant will help us purchase
of construction materials
for two Chimney Swift towers,”
said Van Hapka, president of
Agassiz Audubon. “We're planning
to build one in downtown
Warren near City Hall and the
other at the Audubon Center of
the Red River Valley, on 190th
Street.”
“Our goal is inspire local communities
throughout northwestern
Minnesota – to learn more
about birds, to create habitat for
them and to have fun doing it,”
said Hapka. The Community
Nest Watch Project is focusing
on insect-eating birds whose
populations are declining –
Chimney Swifts, Eastern
Bluebirds, American Kestrels
and Purple Martins.
Agassiz Audubon Society is
recruiting volunteers with construction
skills to help build and
install nest boxes in their communities
– and then monitor
them throughout the summer. If
you’d like to get involved - or
help sponsor a nest box, call the
Audubon Center at 218-745-

With an average flying speed
of 50 mph, Chimney Swifts are
one of the fastest fliers in the
bird world - and they spend all
day in the air, coming to rest
only at night. They feed on aerial
plankton - catching beetles,
wasps and bugs in their beaks
as they fly. They even drink on
Recital Hall in the Humanities
Fine Arts building. The concert
is free and open to the public. A
free-will donation will be accepted.
Some of the 2012 East Coast
tour stops include: Wilmington,
Delaware; Ocean City,
Maryland; Auburn, Maine; New
Brunswick, Canada; and
Quebec City, Canada.

Audubon Society's Heidi
Hughes will be at the Thief
River Falls Public Library to
present a program on these
incredible birds and how to help
them by building a Chimney
Swift Tower. She will provide
chimney swift tower construction
plans and a list of the materials
needed to build one.
