FARM SAFETY<br />
Our local businesses remind you to stay safe year-round by following these basic tips:<br />
Don’t allow “extra riders” on farm vehicles, and never let children ride as passengers.<br />
Always look behind you before starting or backing up farm machinery,<br />
especially when children are present.<br />
Maintain machinery regularly, with particular attention to protective shields,<br />
rollover protectors and seat belts.<br />
Keep chemicals and pesticides safely locked up and out of children’s reach,<br />
and always follow label instructions when using these materials.<br />
Know basic first aid, CPR and emergency response procedures.<br />
Make sure everyone on the farm knows these procedures as well.<br />
When not using tractors, always make sure they are disengaged by shutting off the power,<br />
locking brakes and removing keys from the ignition before dismounting.<br />
Avoid wearing loose clothing that could become entangled with moving equipment parts.<br />
Some areas should be off-limits to children. These include grain bins, silos, manure lagoons,<br />
pesticide storage areas, animal pens and roadways where there is frequent equipment travel.<br />
Wear protective clothing or sunscreen when working for prolonged periods in the sun.<br />
A hat will also help provide sun protection.<br />
Lift heavy items with your legs rather than your back,<br />
and avoid steep slopes when moving heavy equipment.<br />
