Area woman judges cattle in Finland
by David Hill
Editor
Linda Hanson knows her way
around a livestock arena. She’s
judged cows throughout the
United States, even in
Australia. In the first week of
February, she had the distinct
honor to judge Ayrshires in
Finland.
Hanson explained that a
friend of hers on the East Coast
judged cows for the Ayrshire
World Conference about four
years ago and became acquainted
with the organizers. They
invited her to come back two
years ago. This year, they asked
Linda to judge cattle.
Linda said it was cold.
“They’re having the winter we
usually have.” She also noted
that where she went, which is
about four hours from Helsinki,
it looks an awful lot like the
area around Menahga.
It took two days to get there.
She spent a couple of days judging
cattle, did a little touring
and then it took a couple more
days to get back to Minnesota.
Linda said it was a good experience.
She said many of the
breeders in Finland are very
interested in improving the
genetics of their cows. For the
past several years, they’ve been
inviting Canadian and U.S. producers
to Finland in an effort to
improve the breed.
Finnish breeders, she said,
aren’t concerned about milk production.
They are more concerned
about careful genetic
selection that affects conformation
- the shape or structure of
the cow, which affects longevity.
Depending on the source,
Ayrshire has been the main
dairy breed in Finland since the
1960s and currently accounts 66
to 74 percent of the total recorded
cattle.
Linda and her husband,
Mike, and three children -
David, Matthew and Steven -
raise Ayrshires on the family
farm in rural Goodridge. On
Mike’s side of the family, Mike
and Linda’s children are the
fourth generation to raise
Ayrshires - so there’s a lot experience
in the family. In fact,
Norma and Lynn Hanson
received Ayrshire cows for a
wedding present.
Linda also grew up on a farm
near Long Grove, which is located
in eastern Iowa. Her family
has raised cattle for many years
and still does - 50 percent
Holstein and 50 percent
Ayrshire.
Linda attended Iowa State
University, where she obtained
a degree in dairy science and
was on the collegiate dairy judging
team.
At the age of 10, Linda
remembers she was encouraged
to select a 4-H project, but she
didn’t want anything to do with
“frilly” girl-things like sewing.
She wanted to raise a cow.
Linda said her affection for
Ayrshires stems from that experience.
She describes that experience
as “a 4-H project that got
way out of hand.”
It’s doubtful that she could
have ever anticipated what that
4-H project would ever give her -
meeting her future husband at
the National Ayrshire
Convention in 1988, three children,
and the latest benefit of
that “out-of-control 4-H project”
… a trip to Finland and an
opportunity to help make a difference
in that country.
Many producers in Finland are making a concerted
effort to improve the genetics of their cattle.
Specifically, they want to improve conformation.
