<strong>IMMIGRATION</strong> <strong>DOCUMENTS</strong> <strong>TIP</strong> <strong>SHEET</strong><br />
1. STUDY PERMIT<br />
You MUST have a valid study permit to continue studying at Trent. A study permit is valid if has not expired, and if<br />
the permit type is Post-Secondary. You should begin the process of renewing your Study Permit a few months<br />
before the expiry date.<br />
1. You can obtain the application package, instructions and document checklist online at:<br />

watch the video tutorial.<br />
2. Check the application processing times online at:<br />
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/canada/process-in.asp<br />
3. Order a student letter from the <strong>TIP</strong> office – letters will be ready for pick-up on Friday afternoons.<br />
Transcripts are ordered through the Registrars Office<br />
4. Pay the $125.00 fee. If you are applying online you may pay this fee online using a credit card, otherwise<br />
you can pay at your bank using the IMM 5401 form.<br />
5. Collect the rest of your documents including photos, and proof of funds. Follow the application package<br />
clearly – ensure that your passport is valid for a minimum of 6months. The length of your study permit will<br />
not exceed your passport expiry.<br />
6. Plan to come to the <strong>TIP</strong> office for a Study Permit Session which are held on the 3 rd Friday of every month.<br />
It is best to have all of your documents with you when you come to the session.<br />
7. You can now apply for a Study permit either by submitting an online application using the MyCIC at:<br />
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/e-services/study.asp or by mailing the completed forms and all supporting<br />

2. TEMPORARY RESIDENT VISA (TRV)<br />
Your TRV acts as your travel document. If you leave Canada you must ensure that you renew your TRV before reentering.<br />
Multiple Entry allows you to enter Canada as many times as you like until the expiry date. Single entry is<br />
only valid for one entry into Canada.<br />

4. Pay the fee $75.00 for single entry and $150.00 for multiple entry. It is very important to review the<br />
specific guidelines of payment at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5256E5.asp<br />
5. Collect the rest of your documents including photos, and proof of funds. Follow the application package<br />
clearly – ensure that your Study Permit and Passport is valid for a minimum of 6months. Your TRV expiry<br />
date will not exceed that of your Study Permit or Passport.<br />
6. Plan to come to the <strong>TIP</strong> office for a Study Permit Session on Fridays @ 1:30.<br />
7. TRV’s cannot be issued in Canada. You will need to either apply in person outside of Canada (eg: your<br />
home country, or the USA) or mail your documents to one of the Canadian Consulates in the US. Please<br />
see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/offices/index.asp#international for the address and information<br />
of various CIC offices. It is very important that you mail your documents according to the directions<br />
provided on the consulate webpage. Keep Copies of your application and all documents!<br />
IF YOU ARE SENDING YOUR APPLICATION TO BUFFALO:<br />
1. Purchase two prepaid 24 x 32 cm (no smaller) Xpresspost - National envelopes at any Canada Post retail<br />
outlet (do NOT purchase " Xpresspost - USA" envelopes)<br />
2. Use one to send your application package to the Consulate; the second is for them to return your passport<br />
and supporting documents to you<br />
3. Complete the mailing label on the return envelope showing your full mailing address in the "Deliver To"<br />
field and the Fort Erie Post Office box address (below) in the "Return Address" field<br />
4. Send your application and documents along with the return envelope to:<br />

***The Post Office in Fort Erie will not accept commercial courier deliveries.<br />
5. Make a note of the tracking number for each envelope
US VISA<br />
Many Students wish to travel to the United States while studying in Canada. You will need to have a US visa before<br />
you can cross the border.<br />

or by calling (877) 341 2441. https://www.usvisa-info.com/en-CA/selfservice/us_before_you_apply<br />
has additional applicant details.<br />
2. You can apply online at https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/<br />
3. You will need to order a confirmation letter from the <strong>TIP</strong> office.<br />
4. Once you have completed an application, and paid the necessary fees you will need to book an appointment at<br />
the above email address or phone number. See the following link for further details:<br />

You will need to cite your DS-160 confirmation number.<br />
**Ensure that your Passport and Entry VISA are also valid so that you are able to re-enter Canada! ***<br />
PASSPORTS:<br />
You will need a letter from <strong>TIP</strong> if you are applying to renew your study permit. The validity of your Immigration<br />
documents is dependent upon having a current, valid passport.<br />
OFF CAMPUS WORK PERMITS:<br />
You must apply for your Work Permit online at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/e-services/off-campus.asp<br />
You will not need to request a letter from the <strong>TIP</strong> office for an off-campus Work Permit, the online application will<br />
automatically send a verification report to <strong>TIP</strong> so that we can acknowledge your student status and verify your details.<br />

Processing times for immigration<br />
documents are long! Please ensure that<br />
you apply well before the expiry dates<br />
and/or before you leave Canada.<br />
Application forms, processes, payments<br />
options and contacts are different for every<br />
type of application. It is important that<br />
you access the right information. Please<br />
come to the <strong>TIP</strong> office if you are unsure.<br />
If your study permit has already expired,<br />
or is invalid for any reason book an<br />
appointment with <strong>TIP</strong> immediately. If<br />
your Study Permit currently says<br />
‘secondary’ you will need to change<br />
conditions right away, regardless of the<br />
expiry date<br />

LETTERS AND TRANSCRIPTS<br />
Most Immigration Applications<br />
require a letter to verify that you are<br />
currently a student. Please ask for a<br />
letter request form at the front desk.<br />
Letters will be ready for pick-up<br />

Undergraduate Transcripts are<br />
ordered from the Registrars Office.<br />
ESL transcripts and letters are ordered<br />
at the front desk<br />
ESL GRADS: You will need a<br />
transcript from ESL and a Letter from<br />
<strong>TIP</strong><br />
If this is your First Semester:<br />
You will not yet have a transcript, but<br />
you will still need a letter. If you<br />
studied at High school, or another<br />
post-secondary institution in Canada<br />
you will need transcripts from there.
